WTG Al !! Your quiz was a real good one. I've been whistling "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Dixie" since I finished the puzzle. Some disturbing, but interesting facts in this puzzle.

I LOVED IT!!!! It had it all.... chocolate and a cool minty taste....Oh, wait..... I meant the puzzle was educational and fun (and it did have the coolness of a Peppermint Patty).

The history-themed WPs are some of my favorites, so yours was yet another hit with me, Al! Great clues, fun and educational. I tip my hat to you!

4 stars. Didn't think I'd get to take it, but I got in just under the wire. Enjoyed it Al - but I must have left my ability to spell in my other jacket so I'm blaming that for my bad score! ha

Great! Loved it! Done in by Pickett's "famed" charge. Twice.

Super puzzle, buddy!

Kaelin: What happened to your eyeball. I miss it.

Excellent puzzle. Thanks. Totally tanked it, but learned something (should have been a yankee).

Thanks to everyone for taking the puzzle and the positive comments publicly and privately.
It appears most everyone scored very high, so despite the length of sentences and many proper names, most used your vowels, consonants, dictionaries, search engines---- wisely, and didn't lose many points.
If you learned some unknown historical facts and have a better appreciation of the sacrifices during those times to save the nation- then the puzzle was worth the effort to write it. Thanks to my editor [sploofernatural] for their support and guidance.
The battlefield is worth a visit if possible. Gettysburg has a brand new visitors center and other great Civil War tourist attractions.

FYI:::: Here are all ten clues and phrases

Lees decisive loss here was considered the turning point of the civil war. (Southern high water mark)
appointed union commander by president lincoln three days before battle ("George Gordon Meade")
general robert e lee took field command in june eighteen sixty two ("Confederate Commander")
lincoln delivered gettysburg address at the dedication of the cemetery ("Soldiers' resting place")
george armstrong custer led a union cavalry brigade from michigan ("Before Little Bighorn")
commanded ill fated confederate charge resulting in several thousand losses ("Gen. George E. Pickett")
costing fifty one thousand casualties it was the wars bloodiest battle ("a solemn aftermath")
the town of gettysburg is the county seat of adams county pennsylvania ("Site of the battle")
now discredited as its originator abner doubleday served as a union general ("Played baseball?")
the largest battlefield shrine in the usa with over one thousand monuments ("A permanent remembrance")

thanks again

being a student of the American Civil War, I was looking forward to your word puzzle but then life got in the way and I wasn't able to get to it. Is there any way to go back and take an older word puzzle?

This has been talked about, but unfortunately, no, there's not currently a way to take an older WP. Sorry you missed it, but Al posted all of his clues and phrases just a few posts above yours. Hopefully that will provide a little solace.
