It's strange, but as much grief as my Cardinal loving cousins have given me over the years, I don't feel the same joy when the Cubs beat the Cardinals as when they beat Florida and San Francisco. And San Diego, too. Must be leftover resentment from ' 84, ' 89 and ' 03.

Jim, I assume you are from the Quad Cities, you have my sympathies when it comes to baseball. Being a Cubs fan there cannot be a pleasant thing. As I have told Kelly about my Cubs experiences, always hate the Redbirds. Except for the Giants, the Cubs gave the Padres and Marlins two pennants. The happiest day in my trips to Wrigley Field (and there have been hundreds) was the day I saw Stan Musial strike out three times in one game and make two errors in the field. The team I despise the most is those Amazin' Metropolitans.

Hey Chick, I'm still alive! Dumpster pitched a great game last night. But seriously, for the good of Major League Baseball the Cubs should go ahead and choke. The waiting will only make it worse.

Yes, I'm from Rock Island, but being a Cubs fan there was not a rarity. The weird thing about the Quad Cities is that some preferences seem to be particular to one city but not the others. Cardinal fans tend to be mostly in Moline for some reason which is odd because Moline is the one ever so slightly closer to Chicago. (Or maybe it's not so odd)

The Iowa side skews more to the Cubs I believe, even though the minor league team in Davenport is currently in the Cardinal system. In the past, however, it was part of the Cubs, the Twins, and the Angels.

Anyway, I inherited my fandom from my father and in turn I have passed it on to my kids, for better or worse.

A bit of trivia from the last win. This is the first time the Cubs have swept the whole season series versus the Braves in the 133 years these two teams have been facing each other. Of course in the past they used to play each other much more than the six times they did this year.

papermanbill

When it was an eight team league (when baseball was baseball) they played each team 22 times. I remember when the Cubs and Pirates had a six game series in Chicago that included two double-headers. Rainouts did cause this.

It is Friday August 21st. For all you Cub fans out there. According to the Bleed Cubbie Blue website "we know that this is the latest in a season the Cubs have had the best record in baseball since 1945". So perhaps this may be the year. But fate has a way of showing up, when you least expect it. All the best.

How is it possible that today's game is not on television at all? WGN radio doesn't come in very well this far out.

Every Cubs game needs to be on Comcast Sports - they've won like 11 in a row.

They almost always lose when the game is on Fox (plus that guy who does the play-by-play on Fox with Eric Karros is so incredibly lame - butchering everyone's name, getting facts, players and teams blatantly wrong).

And whatever channel WCIU is also needs to stop carrying the Cubs as well. Not only is that channel not on cable around here, but I believe the Cubs have lost every time the game was carried by that channel this year.

They didn't show up the 2nd half. Go figure. Least they only sucked 1/2 a game.

Until we get a QB who can actually complete greater than 15 yard passes, we have to focus on the running game. For the life of me I don't even know why we try. Lovin that Forte dude though.

Donna, Kelly, the referees took that game away from both teams Sunday. Both teams had good plays called back.
I don't care if the Bears go 3-13, keep Grossman off the field. 3-13 is for the game they've won and the two Green Bay games.
Grossman's performance in the Super Bowl was my biggest sports embarassment (as a fan) since the 1969 Cubs.

See? I told you they always lose when the game is on WCIU. It's just plain weird. Still a chance they could pull it out in the final two innings, but I think the WCIU curse is working against them.

Just looked up WCIU and found the answer to why the Cubs always lose when the game is on their channel. The station is owned by the Bartman family's goat.

Congrats to the Cubs. However some announcers can spoil a great moment. Such as "for the first time in one hundred years the Cubs have won back to back division titles"

Idiot announcers indeed. Divisions have only existed for 40 years.

Now if they'd said, "For the first time in 100 years, the Cubs are making back-to-back postseason appearances," that would be different.

Ken, I have been a Cubs fan since 1951, I was seven (the age of reasoning ???). I have seen the greatest players of their era
and I remember when everyone laughed at Wrigley Field because of no night games. Now it is regarded as a sacred baseball
shrine. Bullspit !!! The playoff system system sucks and everyone knows it. Four or five teams in a geographical division does not make a champion or deserve some bootleeger to make t-shirts. The Cubs are the top team in the NL and should go right
to the World Series, instead they have "two" playoff rounds and can actually get sent home if they lose a 3 of 5 series.
"MONEY, MONEY, MONEY". Oh, Mayor Daley is having a big Cubs Rally with the governor of Illinois in downtown Chicago,
yippee. One last thing, if the Cubs go to the Series, how many times do you think the audience will here these three words,
"One Hundred Years"

They don't know how to spell John. I like Gruden over Love-a-dub any day. Bad discipline beat the Bears, not the Buccanears. How many here know there was a big pre-game fight ??

Liam, my solution for some time has been to expand to 32 teams (Buffalo and Vancouver), mitose into 4 8-team leagues, and go back to the 154 game season, no interleague, with 2 rounds of playoffs between the league champs.

Donleigh, and my all-time favorite, 1940!

Chick, I attended a game this year in which not only did a pitcher hit a grand slam, it was an American League pitcher! Didn't help much though, Seattle's at the bottom of the AL.

Smoke, I fear the Bucs don't have much to brag about, save for looking down on our Nationals. (This is a baseball thread, after all!)

Ken, I agree with you 100% on the four eight team divisions. Like I said before, the '83 Mets cured me of any playoff system with baseball. Oh, 154 games would be great.

Buffalo and Vancouver? Sounds like a hockey expansion from the past. Nashville and San Antonio are cleaner and growing. Other than that: Great Idea!

Of all the hockey expansions, that's probably the most appropriate one. Giving a second team to each of Kansas City and Washington probably wouldn't be optimal.

So, now do the Cubs just go out and play hard the last four games and let the chips fall were they may, or should they manipulate the situation a bit to pick their first round opponent?

Excellent job in the 10th by Theriot, Lee and Ramirez. Hopefully, Derosa's strain isn't serious.

GO CUBS!

Wanted to know what the mood was in Chicago after the loss. I can catch AM1000 from here in Ottawa. People were still in shock, to be really mean. One of the first callers called them (with respect to the city of Chicago) the CHOKEAGO CUBS. Too bad it would have been nice to see at least a WS apperance. But as Brooklyn Dodgers used to say "Wait till next year".
