I have only been a member since 1/07 - and from bits and pieces I've read in various threads, just like anything else in life there are musing about the good old days.

I'm curious about who has been here "since the beginning" that participates or at leasts plays voyeur and reads the boards.

How was it when Sploofus began and since my only change has been from 1.0 to 2.0 - how has Sploofus evolved for the better.

How much different are things from the beginning or "what did we miss"

September of 05 for me. Much smaller community. I couldn't wait to spend my evenings in the shouts, giggling and chatting. That aspect is mostly gone. Justin most usually hung out with us late night, laughing, getting our suggestions on new things, how to improve the things we had. Late nighters were beta testers, kinda. When we talk about the loss of community, I think the biggest part of it is the loss of Justin's personal touches and participation in the site. I remember one night we all sat and guffawed while he changed sploofus background into different things - one of them being an entire collage of me. I giggled until I tinkled, I think.

Then there was the big crash, when a few of us got together and tried to think of a way to get a bigger & better server for sploofus. We talked about donating money, higher levels of membership that cost more, but with more privileges. It was actually Kelly who came up with the platinum idea. And it started with just a handful of us. The platinum insignia was not a status symbol, but a badge that said "I'm supporting sploofus, I love this site and I'll pay more to keep it going."

People still bickered back and forth but only paying members were allowed to post. I think that kept down some of the "I'm a newbie and I think people here are bullies" posts that broke out like a rash not too long ago.

It was a fun place. Although the institution of editors has made the site, as a whole, a much higher quality site, there are aspects of it that have turned things for the worse. By having player/editors, you run the risk of having some pinched, uptight, player who immensely dislikes certain players, all of a sudden given a position of power. And those things have shown over the years, and caused hard feelings.

The site and the games have all improved. The depth of the site is better. But certainly at the cost of the community feel. I miss it. A lot.

As far as the constant ranters in the threads - they have always been. The names & avatars have changed, but they are a constant.

I miss several of the players who have just quietly slipped away in the past year with this whole mess. But I'm enjoying a lot of the new friends I've made.

So I guess if I would have to choose one thing that has made the difference between back then and now, its Justin's participation in the site. Back then, we would have done anything for him and this site. And we did.

Thanks Lodi - what a great commentary - exactly what I has hoping for from the veterans.

Although I should be doing other things, I went here:
and started reading backwards - that bump from Justin on the forums really got my attention - talk about buried threads.

I just read that dawn of the editors in response to bad spelling & plagerism from other trivia sites on page 117 (I think) - I'm going to continue reading "the past" - it's been enjoyable and I see some names that are familiar - Tuzilla & Surreyman - I'm sure I'm going to run into some more. I read the thread about where everyone started banding together to keep sploofus's been very informative and enjoyable thus far.

I have met some really neat people over the past year & a half - and Sploofus has been my sanity break from irritating clients (why hire someone to something right if you think you already know how to do it?) and a displaced husband (they'll call me if they want me to work) - right now I'm trying to figure out the best way to write off my platinum upgrade on my business expense because without it - I wouldn't be able to handle it all - cheap therapy!

Lorri, I started a few weeks before you and didn't know about this part of Sploofus until I was here almost a year. I thought that the Shout in the WR + WM section was the only way to communicate, except for PM's. Like Lori, I do remember when Justin participated in the Shout. I do agree with the stuff Lori said and will stay Platinum next month. There isn't much difference from Gold to Platinum with my use, but the money probably keeps the squirrels fed that make this thing go.

I've been here since 2004...September marks my 4 year anniversary...I've seen a lot of changes, some good and some bad. I remember the teams (does anyone else?)...Talk about bickering and name calling...Also, a lot of good players that were here when I started either faded away or got mad and left. I have also made some great friends on the site and this is like a second family to me. You have been there for me when I really needed someone and I am very thankful for that...I can also remember when there were no editors here on the site and some quizzes that were written with lots of grammer errors in them and facts that weren't accurate...Those were the good old days! In fact I have several quizzes that are still floating around out there that were written in small case letters! LOL...

I've been here since '04 as well. I was a member of the Sploofus Divas (Champions!) and the teams were the first thing to bring people on the site together. Yeah, there was a lot of smack talking and perhaps there were some hurt feelings; there usually are in competitions. Before that, we really didn't have a way to interact. Even PMs were a little bit tricky to navigate, sometimes. The site was a lot of fun, but there was no community to speak of. I remember having taken ALL of the quizzes that were available on the site and watching the "new quizzes" list for something to do! Even then, even without the forums, it was addictive and it was fun to watch each new feature roll out and be devoured by us all!

Interesting thread. I joined in late October of 2005, so the editors were already on board; I never experienced the free-wheeling Sploofus. It took me about a month to poke my mouse at the chat boards. And I never frequented the shout, (and still don't as I do most of my sploofing while folks are sleeping). I heard tell of teams, and alliances, but I never experienced any of that.

I do think that the posting community (as opposed to the larger number of folks who just take their TQOTD and never are heard from) was much closer in my early days here. There were none of these accusations of cliques, or nasty editors, or board police, or anything like that. I do think that Justin's frequent presence had a lot to do with the closeness. I miss that.

I joined in September 2005, and my early memories concur a lot with what others have written. I think Sploofus has evolved in a good way, and editors ensure that submitted quizzes are up to the required standards (although I trust that if some are also live members, that they are professional enough to be objective, and set aside personal opinions of players). I have observed a lot of movement with names coming and going, and the evergreens are Tuzilla, Bigbird, Surreyman, Vicrowe, Garrybl, and Bushy fox (Bev) etc. I had two extended absences from Sploofus due to personal matters, and it was lovely to return on both occasions, a bit like going back home. Everything in life is transient, and any changes experienced now, will become a comfortable and happily accepted norm with time. Perhaps in a few years time on the Salty Dog, we will be reminiscing about “the good old days of Sploofus" which are now, and will always be, if you are committed, and love life on the Island.<)

I came in January of '05. Was asked to join a Team (but not those snooty Diva's - yes the Teams in general caused a lot of mean spirited competition back then).

I also have some ridiculous quizzes form pre-editor days. There were no WRs or WMs, no BBS.

If you click on Community/Player DIrectory you can sort the current list of players by date they joined. You have to click it twice to get the oldest dates first. Then you can see who has been around the longest! The list only shows people who have been active within the past 60 days (I think), or still have paid memberships whether they play or not.

I stumbled upon Sploofus in September of 2006 and played off and on. I really liked the Word Puzzles so I became a gold member. When I saw there was going to be a SploofPhilly I went not knowing what to expect. Everyone I met that day was very nice and we had a great time. I keep hoping for another get together (can't make the Death Float due to work and such) so I can see everyone again and meet more members.

I was a Diva also along with Rnmorg...we were the team to beat back then! LOL! WE ROCKED didn't we Rn?
I think the community feeling was there at least among the teams but when they were done away with I think we got closer as a community as a whole...

I think my father (Surreyman) might be one of the oldest - in all senses!
Around July 2004 - No. 64?
He's away at the moment so I cannot verify that.
I'll point out this post when he gets back.

Surreyman is indeed very high up on the list - number 12 of the current players! Good idea Suzer - I've never thought to do that. It was fun seeing some names I hadn't seen in a while (Machiabelly! That was always one of my favorite player names =) and it was interesting to see that some people I'd have thought were newer have been around forever. It's also interesting how long some people who must be strictly TQOTDers have stuck with it!

(I've been here since October of 2005 btw.)

Remember when we had avatars that changed with the length of time you were on the site? I was so thrilled when I got all 3 balls.

I just got an email from sploofus that I was awarded 10,000 points for a referral I made. I remember how important and rare those 10,000 points used to be and how mad I was one time when I didn't get mine. Now those 10,000 points seem so inconsequential.

I was happy to finally get a Yoda and not be a newbie anymore.

I was also really excited about cracking the all-time 100 leaderboard (which is as far as it used to go) and to get my first million. Hard to believe now, but I when I hit 1 million I was already in the top 100!

And it was really impressive when the first player hit 1 billion. Who was that? Someone who isn't here anymore ... was it Notkenjennings?

It was Wegeruk, in December 05. I had to look because I incorrectly said Kudos for hitting a trillion.

Wow...we've come a LONG WAY.

I've been here since Aug 04 and have been a regular ever since. I was a Diva too and we were the Champions. Remember Dari, Mommy of 3 and many others. I see Dari once in a while and say hi. I could have done without all the bickering and name calling but I'm pretty sure most of them aren't around anymore. Sploofus has grown into a better than ever site but I too miss Justin. Does anyone remember the site Dari set up so that we could all stay in touch?

I remember the site Aquamar...It was a site for the Divas to congregate and talk...I sort of miss doing that...It just seemed to vanish into the woodwork...

"a site for divas to congregate"
Maybe there was a time when there were "cliques"

Wow what a thread! I never realized I was actually missed so much.

HA Lodi I do recall swapping out background images across the site one night long ago..... brilliant colors, stripes, a keg of beer.... oh man that was fun. If I were to tinker around like that now it would generate a qwabillion support tickets it seems. When Sploofus was at about 1,000 members it was the best, as far as community goes. Everyone pretty much knew everyone and it was easy to quickly put together little fun scripts that were of no consequence.

I hate to think of today's Sploofus as being this sluggish, bureaucratic, cold place, instead of like the bar at Cheers where everybody knows your name..... there are certainly good and bad aspects of having a site that slowly, but steadily grows.

One of my fondest memories is when Sploofus (for the first year or two) was on a shared server that cost about $200 per month. We've all seen the current servers in the video I put together, and THANKFULLY for Gold and Platinum members the site is still able to pay for itself, with the slimmest sliver of black ink imaginable.

I love Sploofus. It was, is, and always will be my hobby, as well as my neighborhood of friends.

I am not going anywhere, and will do some thinking on how to get back in the game more visibly, and preserve some of the nostalgia while it lasts.

Until then, all of you who have paid to be a part of this community (ESPECIALLY you PLATS!), I thank you from the bottom of my heart because it is your support, not the support of the free members, that keeps this place alive. And I really do mean that. Thank you!

My friend, Maurlin (Linda), says she invited me to join in 2005. I sure don't remember receiving that invitation, but wish I had noticed it because I've missed a lot by only joining in Dec. of 2007. I STILL feel like a newbie!

I hate to sound like a broken record (or Lodi's long lost twin), but I completely concur. I miss Justin hanging around and joining in the BS. I know he's got stuff to do, but the interaction is missed.

The other thing I miss is the constant bantering in the shout. Don't know why...but it seems gone . And we can all thank Kimmie for the shout. May she RIP...dunno if she's still here like Heidi...reinvented.

After that I miss my sanity.
