TRAVELLERS' TIMEWASTER

Having just docked in from an overnight Channel ferry and arrived home too xxxxxxx late to go to bed ...

Here's a timewasting game that we played on the boat. I don't know if others know it?

Each in turn says a letter.

As the letters build up, no-one may say a letter that then forms a complete word.

BUT each letter MUST continue a sequence that COULD continue towards a word.

If you form a complete word, you're out.

If you're challenged and cannot specify the eventual word, you're out.

If you challenge, and a word is possible, you're out.

S'easy.

So let's start off, and my starter letter is .................

You only challenge if you think someone's added a letter that can't then continue to complete a word.
Your added letter thus has to be able to continue towards a word (and NOT complete a word itself).
But you try and choose letters that might fox others and kid them into challenging (or you can deliberately put in a 'false' letter that cannot complete a word and, if you get away with it unchallenged, you can then challenge next go!).
Very simple rules, but a lot of subtlety in the game.
Such as, for instance .....

Surreyman, zeedee and I posted at the same time, that's why I discounted my letter. I can see that it should have stood though. okay, I lose We'll meet again

now that i think about it, my letter shouldn't count since we posted at the same time. I had no chance to follow her letter as I wished. Now I really do have to leave. could be a fun game though.

Nope, I challenged 'cos I thought 'thallai' could not be continued to make a word.
I'd normally have won 'cos I don't think it can, can it?
But there was a mix-up in posting order so we'll call this one a draw!

To simplify the rules, just "add a letter that does not complete a word but which can continue to make a word with further letters".

Then work out the subtleties for yourselves!

This game is called ghosts or superghosts if you can build letters at either end.
James Thurber wrote at least one article about how to play the game -- it is in his collected works but I'm too lazy to look it up.
But I'd recommend anyone who is a fan of Thurber to try and google it if they can.
For those of you only familiar with his comic work, his semi-straight articles are maybe his finest work (IMHO) and he wrote two of the best children's stories ever.....
Though they are out of print do try to read the thirteen clocks and the Wonderful O. Adults will enjoy them too.

OK - I'll happily start another one.

The essential rule is simple - "add a letter that does not complete a word but which can continue to make a word with further letters added".

If you add a letter that does complete a word, you lose.

If you think a word cannot be made from further letters addeed to those shown, then challenge the previous letter added. Whoever is right wins.

That's it. There are many other subtleties.
For instance, leading towards a weird word that cons others into challenging.
Adding a 'wrong' letter that others might be scared to challenge, allowing you to challenge on your next go.
Forcing the next letter to complete a word.
Etc., etc.!

It's difficult playing here since, in reality, the players should be known beforehand, with each adding a letter in turn.

But let's give it a go anyway.

Let's start with .......

C

Yep, Scrabble rules, plurals allowed. No proper nouns.

Garrybl didn't see the 'L' before posting, so to be fair to him it doesn't count (unless he wants to be challenged!).
It stands at CRUL
