I don't know if this shows on anyone else's page, but here, at the bottom of Smaug's very personal post, there are two VERY inappropriate, insensitve ads.

I sent in a green bug on it, but I think this is very bad form. BAD form. Maybe it just hits me wrong and I'm over-sensitive about it. But I find it offensive.

I just posted my comment re.this....on Smaug's thread
There are three ads now....
I am more concerned about the PRIVACY issue, than
that the ads may or may not be offensive, they could
even be helpful in some way....but how did any AD.
person know what has happened????

These are not the first posts I have written about this.
Worth keeping an eye on????

Google Adsense operates on displaying ads from advertisers that correspond with the content on a page -

I mentioned weeks ago that I didn't want to see the banner ads any more since I support the site with my bucks. Justin agreed and said he'd be taking them off. He didn't, and now we gotta look at ads offering to help catch cheating spouses. Come on, Justin, get the god damned ads off. They're offensive as hell and I don't want to see them any more. If this message is more offensive than the ads you are running for more bucks, then remove them both, I don't really give a damn right now.

I agree about the banner. I'll have it removed shortly

Right now I am just getting the new ad placement together in various areas for the [non-paying users].

Thanks for your patience!

That was cut and pasted by me--note the date--and not a current response from Justin.

It is uncanny how Google selects the banner ads sometimes based on the thread's topic.

Check out the original "Death Float '08" thread by Eesus [ need to go back a few pages on Salty Dog- last post July 29].

I use google mail, and I am often amused and sometimes offended by the banner ad that appears at the top of my inbox. The ads there work the same way--they are always connected to the content of the email, but sometimes the connection is downright bizarre. Unfortunately, almost NOTHING that you put online is truly private. I try to impress on my kids that they must be careful not to ever post something -- on MySpace or YouTube or whatever -- that they might not want some future employer to view.

Or something that you might not want a CURRENT employer to view! I know a woman who got fired because of a photo she posted on her Facebook or Myspace page, holding a sign that she thought was funny but others thought was offensive. Unfortunately she was wearing a company T-shirt in the photo, so it reflected badly on the company and she lost her job.

I still have this on my to-do list..... hang in there.

Indeed Google just indexes the content on the page, and then sends over links that it "thinks" are relevant to whatever text is on the web page. It is all automated by the Googlebot.

Thank you,

It's great to see you back in the chat, Justin. I haven't been here long enough to remember the good ol' days but I get the drift of the memories of others, and I think this is such a unique site. I'm sorry if your post in another thread means you're having domestic problems similar to our friend Smaug. Even if not, surely you get what it must be like to read a thread of encouragement and sincere good wishes, only to find a group of scammy offers at the bottom seeking to make a buck off of someones pain like that. I know there isn't some gnome somewhere setting up the ads, but it seems like such a slap in the face. I hope you can do something about that. Either that, or get a lot more money for the ads with this proof that they are noticed sometimes, at least the sleazy ones. Then you wouldn't miss the support so much, if someone was revolted enough to just get out of here.
