Thank you for posting this. I just sent a mass e-mail.

In case someone can't see the video, the gist of the message is that tires are being sold to consumers here at ages that are far past safe. In some cases tires have been sitting on shelves 10 years or longer and the treads come apart very easily and cause accidents. Those are the pieces of tire you see lying on the thruways.

There is a code on tires that you can check to see when a tire was manufactured. There is a 3 or 4 digit number at the end of a long sequence of letters and numbers on your tire. This number gives you the week and year a tire was made. For example the number 4202 means the tire was made the 42nd week of 2002. The number 459 means the tire was made the 45th week of 1999 and so on.

Being a tire fanatic, I find this subject interesting.. In the last 35 years, I have been a regular customer at local Firestone tire dealers where I live and where I worked as a truck driver. I seldom drive on a set of tires more than two years or 40,000 miles. I do not buy cheap tires, my pickup has Bridgestone tires on it now, they're great. I didn't have audio for the video Chickie saw but I got the gist from Kim's explanation. I will be the first person to say that tire dealerships will seem as crooked as a used car dealer when it comes to money, but I will defend them on safety. I had a small cut on the side of one of my tires and Firestone wouldn't repair it because it was a certain distance from the side of the tire (a fraction of an inch). There is no way (in my opinion) that they would knowingly sell an old tire. By the way, my tires don't have air in them, they're filled with Nitrogen. Unless I get a flat, my tire pressure remains the same regardless of the temperature. I also get an extra smooth ride with the nitrogen, too. It costs about $7.00 per tire, but it is worth the money. Check it out.

Yes, tire fanatic. Truck drivers refer to tires as shoes and I liked mine like new all the time. BTW I thought an avatar can be used only once. I see that guy from Alaska has it too. Maybe he's Superboy ?? I really don't care about it anyway. I renewed my yearly Platinum last night and they denied my request to change my screen name to SnookerBalls and it broke my heart. The support person said a screen name cannot be changed at anytime, weird.

A bunch of the site policies do seem arbitrary. I think you should be allowed to change your handle, particularly as you pay for the fancy membership.

It's probably a security measure to cut down on the # of members
with more than one "name"....who then use it to cheat on quizzes.

Snookerballs....think you need to change your avatar to the "thong"
thing ASAP. Before Superboy takes over your job....

um... back to tires...actually PMB- if you could see this John Stossell/ ABC report, you might find all is not hunky-dory in the tire world as you might think.

There is proposed legislation In Britain and the US to limit the shelf life to 6 years, which sounds reasonable.
