OLYMPICS

Maybe I'm just xenophobic but the opening ceremony is creeping me out.

How?

I think it is cool myself. 100 million dollars spent on that baby!

OMG!

The bamboo. What do you think of that?

The opening ceremonies are always interesting.

The weirdest opening ceremonies in my memory was the Albertville Winter Olympics. Anyone else remember the very strange outfits?

I think this is absolutely beautiful. Can you imagine getting 2008 people to hit a drum at the same time. Now watching the part with the piano in center and all the color changes. Now forming the Bird's Nest Bravo! Bravo!

I will try to watch with a more open mind. I just don't like zillions of people doing the same thing at one time I guess. Seems too stiff or something.

Fake smiles, fake cranes. Think I will start a new xenophobe site. Well, there are probably enough of those, never mind.

Did you see the quote from the little boy? He saved kids at his school after the earthquake. He said "I was the hall monitor; it was my responsibility". Cool
I thought the entire ceremony was the coolest thing ever. Loved it.

All good stuff but, frankly, with their history of mass pageants, I thought it was going to be rather more stunning than it was.
But I'm an Olympics nut and the next two weeks are written off for anything else (luckily the wedding anniversary and wife's birthday just miss!).

I missed the torch lighting. How did they do it?

A veteran Chinese athlete 'flew' to the top of the stadium, 'ran' horizontally around the perimeter, and torched a 'fuse' that lit the spiral torch.
Again, a reasonable sight, but not over-special. I still preferred that archer at Barcelona!

Everyone preferred the archer. That took some skill to accomplish.

What should we do in Vancouver?

Get a team of ski jumpers to light it from 200 feet in the air. That would be cool.

Every torch lighting ceremony seems to try and top the one before. As great as it was seeing a runner appear to run sideways around the sadium it in was not the best ever. Donna is right. The one in Littlehammer with the long jump skier holding the torch and the archer was the best and the one in Sydney where it looked like the man was actually in the fire was next. Hope everyone has a happy weekend.

Sorry, the Archer was in Barelona as perviously mentioned. But doing a long jump ski jump while holding a torch is hard to do.

Wasn't the archery fixed in Barcelona?
Some guy fired an arrow somewhere, and they automatically lit the flame?

I think you are right Barry, I do remember the flaming bow and arrow thing. Personally, after the Olympic games (both summer and winter) from the 60's and 70's, I don't bother watching those events at all. Anyone remember the U.S. -Russian basketball game in 1972, that did it for me. BTW, I saw the flaming bow and arrow thing on CNN.

No, the arrow actually passed through the gas and lit the flame. A one time only shot. Thay had the back-up plan in place to flick their Bic if he missed.

Papermanbill

How I remember that farce! OMG! One can watch excerpts on YouTube.

Unreal...So many cheap shots, much dishonesty present. Just terrible how that darned clock was reset, over and over.

I love it all. Recorded it, and just finished watching a little bit ago. That way I could speed through the commercials and the marching in. The drums were amazing, the fireworks spectacular, and I thought the torch lighting was great!

Wonder what possessed someone to invent the butterfly stroke?

Michael Phelps just set another worlds record in the men's 400 IM/swimming.

As for butterfly - don't know - I used to swim the IM and the butterly kicked my butt - I hated the butterfly - the backstroke was my thing and where I excelled - hated breast stroke too - they finally took me out of the IM and let me just do freestyle & back

Woo Hoo Michael!

What should they do in Vancouver? Easy. Wayne Gretzky lights a puck with a torch and slapshots it toward the ignition point, where curlers with brooms direct it home.

Butterfly is evil. Hated it with a passion. My stroke was always breast and backstroke.

Phelps was incredible as was Ryan. Ryan is a real cuties.

Kaufman! Lol!

I thought the opening ceremony was awesome! I'm only on this site instead of watching games because I got kicked off the set so my hubby and daughter could watch some dumb horror movie.

Go USA!!

No Sandracan, I'm with you - see above somewhere.

I think the butterfly was an Oz stroke invented for lifeguards to swim out over the incoming waves?

Okay Surreyman, me and you against the world
I googled butterfly. Seems it was invented at University of Iowa in US to make the breaststroke faster. I like your version better though.
