My first vocab question (my best category) after a long dry spell and I misread the question! I missed the fact that it said "What is NOT the correct answer?"

Gracious me !!! There is someone on this site (besides me) that "DOES NOT" like it when you blow a wager because of the word NOT. Like I've been saying, if you don't want a correct answer don't make up a question. A lot of these questions use the word "NOT" because the writer ran out of ideas and used the "NOT" question to fill out the required amount of questions needed for whatever their assignment was. After running my mouth, I'll bet big money that I will have a TQOTD question( by 8-29-08) that will want to know what is NOT the correct answer. We all know it's the luck of the draw lol.

I had one the other day that had answers that could be correct, but you had to choose the BEST answer. When you are trying to go fast and just skimming the questions and looking for the answer and your eyes light upon one, your heart sores, you click like hell, and then the screen changes. Well, I guess I don't have to describe the feeling upon seeing the answer and rereading the question, and realizing you should have taken the time to read it thoroughly. Disappointed is an understatement.

Although I do not mind the "which is NOT the answer" questions, I do wish those who write TQOTD would write them so they can be done quickly, without worrying about pouring over the verbage used. After I read my question, if I don't know the answer right away, I start looking at my answers, eliminating ones I know can't possibly be correct, concentrating on the rest, etc. I do appreciate the more straight forward questions. But when you have to reread the question to be clear on just exactly what the author wants, it certainly takes away the time you are afforded to answer the question.

That's also probably a big factor for showdown times. Someone just read the question faster than you.

Until I start getting more than one vocab a month, it's best I keep my yap shut or I may start to sound angry and bitter. And maybe a tad paranoid.

I will admit my vocabs have been pretty scarce as well, but since they aren't my favorite category, I don't notice as much.

i can sympathize with you, Nancy, because the same thing happened to me a few days ago.

i don't mind the "which is not" type questions in a quiz, but Lodi is right, with just 30 seconds to answer TQOTD (and even less time for showdowns) there isn't enough time to read the question and the choices word for word to decide which is NOT.

hopefully, when Justin gives the editors tools to correct and update TQOTD database, they will 'fix' these types of questions too.

Angry, bitter and paranoid, I checked my TQOTD at 7:34 A.M. EST this morning of 8-17-08. It was a Movies and Television
"NOT" question (The Luck of the Draw). I firmly grasped my mouse and grit my custom dentures and read the well written question. It was a question about movies, animated at that. I carefully read it and eliminated a few answers and then I clicked my little wireless mouse and there it was, a big blue Sploofus congratulations ribbon. A tear of happiness came to my eye and a feeling that I am overcoming my hidden (or not so hidden) fear of the word "NOT". I will admit that I did one of Rowlanda's hippie meditation exercises before I started the question, "Thanks, Sweetie !!!". If there anymore of you out there with NOTitis, maybe we can form a group. Please excuse me, it is time for my medications.

I used to be DEATHLY afraid of sweet older sister told me
they make nests in your hair - when I was very impressionable.
One day I looked up and there where 15 - count 'em - 15 spiders on the
ceiling over my head !!!! Some of them even came down to join me in
reading my book....
So I decided God was teaching me a BIG Hairy lesson....grabbed the fly
swatter, and the can of Raid and got rid of almost all of them....caught the
rest in jars and put them out of doors!!!!
Not afraid of spiders any more....but I do hate all the flies and fruit flies
I am subject to each Summer....spiders have their uses!!!!
LESSON: Face your Fear....and the next one and the one after that....etc.
