THE FICTION TO FILM GAME

Not sure if this is an original idea, but here goes: I'll name a book (try to keep it famous or semi-famous) and you tell me what actors/actresses(living or dead) you imagine playing the main roles. This might be a self limiting game, depending on who has read what, but we can give it a go for a little while anyway! If the book has already been made into a movie, please mention if you know who played whom and whether you agreed with the choices or not. For older books made into films, try to think who you'd like to see in the remake!

My opener? The Road, by Cormac McCarthy.

I have never read that book so I don't know.

Here's mine. Who do picture playing Kinsey Milhone? Come on Judy, I know you must have some opinions about this. I was thinking Jodie Foster.

I haven't read "The Road" either, but I do agree with SciFiDwarf's suggestion for Kinsey Milhone. Jodie Foster is a good pick for that!

She's too old. Remember that Kinsey is stuck in the 1980's and is still in her 30's. Also, her hair is darker than Jodie's. I truly love Jodie, but I just don't see her as Kinsey.

It's hard for me to pick because I don't picture her as anyone I've ever seen before, but I guess maybe Hilary Swank.

Well, I went and poked around on the Web and I found an interesting idea. Someone suggests that a younger Diane Keaton would make a good Kinsey (http://www.thrillingdetective.com/millhone.html). Somehow, that makes me think of a female Colombo/Peter Falk character!

I don't know if I agree with that. Diane is a great actress but I'm just not sure. Hillary Swank would be a good choice except she tends to go for the Oscar rolls and I really don't see "A is for Alibi" as an Oscar winning film. Kinsey needs to be tough, yet feminine and plain, yet pretty. Diane is all those but I don't see it.

Looks like we've exhausted our thoughts on Kinsey, so let's move on....

I was going to do The Time Traveler's Wife, but I see it's already been cast. Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams. Only thing there is I pictured Henry older, even though he ages in the book, I just thought he'd have an "older" face. Still, pretty good choices, I think.

Never read that one. What about Life of Pi. Who would you picture playing Pi? I haven't been able to decide.

That's harder because of his ethnicity and age. I don't know of anyone for that role.

How about the Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child. Who could be Jack? Former MP, about 6' 5", 220-250 lbs. Ice blue eyes and fair hair. Probably not exceptionally gorgeous but still handsome enough to get a gal in nearly every book.

Paramount Pictures has the rights to the novels but hasn't made any plans to make a picture yet.

That's a good question. I have only read one of his books. I need to check some out at the library. 6'5" 22o lbs. and blue eyes. I can't think of anyone right now, but I'll you know.

Filming for "The Road" is complete. John Hillcoat ("The Proposition") directed. The father and son are played by Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee. The cast also includes Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, and Robert Duvall. It will be released in the US on November 26th.

Interesting...I should have looked it up first! Viggo Mortenson is the sort of 'strong, silent' type that I would associate with the father. I actually pictured someone older and craggier, but in his age group, Viggo is about as craggy as you can get!

WHOOPS. Just checked on the IMDB site. I take all of that back after seeing the photo stills from the movie. Viggo is perfect.
