Happy first day of the new school year tomorrow. We can all commiserate about how this day usually goes.

I don't have rosters yet (check).
I don't know if I have a homeroom class yet (check).
I don't know who plays what instrument yet (check check).

Is it bad form to call in sick the first day?

I just woke up from a nightmare about my first day at my new city-district-schools. My entire class disappeared while I was getting a first-aid kit for one who hurt her finger! ha ha

Best of luck to ya this week.

Good luck to you too!

I do have my rolls, schedule, planning period (last period of the day), and keys.

Bless us all!
Traffic will be horrible tomorrow. Leave early.

I always abhor the first day. Normally, I never have anyone....takes them awhile to show their true colors. I end up working in the office and trying to subdue the throngs that are incensed because their cherub has not been placed in a class. "Did you turn in an enrollment card at the end of the year before school was out?" 1. no, I didn't know I needed to 2. Certainly, I always do that. 3. The office lost it. 4. What do you mean you don't have a record of my child ever going here! 5. Why do you need a copy of my lease? etc. etc. etc By 10 a.m., I will be brain dead and have an itch on my palm to start slapping people.

On a lighter note, this is the first time in five years that I am happy to be going back to school. The wicked witch of the west is now at the administration building. My new principal is fabulous. He does not talk down to you.....he remembers being a teacher himself. He has already put into effect some new procedures that should have been done ages ago. I am expecting a good year and that really makes me happy. The children I get probably won't be much better but then, I am used to that. Working in a cohesive atmosphere makes small things fall to the way side. I hope that all teachers have a good year! Now get out there and try to stamp out ignorance!!!!!!

I think your Wicked Witch of the West showed up at my school! (Or do we all have one?)

It's not the first day that bothers me so much...but the fact that I have just finished the third week of school and I'm still getting new students showing up in my classes. Between the parents who never bothered to get them registered and the counselors who got them in the wrong classes it's nearly impossible to make the first few weeks go smoothly.

God Bless teachers, you are under rated, under paid, over worked and have the patience of angels!

I wish you loads of patience, a bigger paycheck, understanding and supportive parents, a great working environment and kids who will make improvements in big and small ways this year.

We always ditched the first and last day of every semester. Nothing ever went right then, anyway.

I taught in a high school for 31 years and never accomplished much the first day of school (passing out books, etc) or the last day of school (kids turned in books, etc.).

Good luck to Jank and all educators.

Try to enjoy the first day of your school''s return to its mission- teaching our kids to prepare for their future. You have a major role to play.

The opportunities are boundless. Who knows- a future Barack Obama or John McCain [ or Wynton Marsalis, Kelly Clarkson, etc.] may be amongst your midst.

Wouldn't that be special?

You deserve [& more] the pay and benefits that your profession brings.

Just wanted you to know that the first day went without a glitch. Our building was just awesome for the first time in 5 years. All of the teachers were were the children. Atmosphere and a feeling of family once again has made all the difference in the world.

Are 4th and 7th graders still mandated to study TX history and pass a test?

End of course exams are on their way. Texas history is still mandated, yes.

Do you know of any teacher who uses as an aid a book in 3-ring-binder format and titled "Texas Indians" (from Toucan Valley Publications)?
