Interested in what other people felt about this. In particular the issue of the non-alike word.
Rather than possibly prejudice other people -- how did YOU like the theme?

I really struggled with this one. Didn't have great mental energy going in, so perhaps my brain wasn't on high alert and concentration.

I just couldn't figure out the clues well at all. No way to know where the common thread to the "different" was.
Started filling letters just to try to save points.

If anybody gets a "fiver" on this one- call the FBI.

I need a nap.

That was HARD. I liked it, but I don't think anyone's going low this morning.

Definitely difficult. Different. Challenging. Trombone

Do not like these at all. The odd item is nothing but a trial and error exercise. Puzzles that involve pure guesswork make me want to just throw in letters to get it over with.

Oh I forgot to say, leave the odd word out and it would have been a decent puzzle.

And I thought I was the only one confused by the apparent randomness of the odd one out....

Y'all like my Fours !!! Got one coming soon. I do agree, the odd one isn't fair to the player. But asking for the incorrect answer on a TQOTD isn't fair either. 5:32 PM est 8-29-08--$20.00 bet made already. 9-08-08 or before, I win.

Bill - i do like your fours. I think it is NOT the point to make these impossible.

Were we all agreed that the odd one out set is a fine formula --but the odd one out DOES have to be the opposite of the other four not just a random word. I had Jamaica and Thousand as odd words out. Now I'm not saying it took me time to guess them; it didn't. But from an intellectual idea if nothing else I'd like the odd one out to have some sort of link to the four?
Jamaica works only in the context of four islands in one group not as a different group altogether.
I think I had platter with four groups of pottery --that's really not fair because a platter is a kind of ceramic, or might be....

I enjoyed your WP, thanks! It doesn't matter to me if the one "different" word is completely unrelated to the other four. To me, that seems to be the point of the puzzle. I thought it was a fun challenge.

Well, if I could offer unsolicited advice, I'd say the odd word out should be something that still connects to the other four just so players would know if they were in the right neighborhood. So if the puzzle is four brass instruments, the odd word out would be a violin or viola, Or, to use an example from this puzzle, if the four words are items worn on top (i.e., sweater), the odd word would be an item worn on the legs or feet.

I did well (in terms of letters, not time), but I, too, disliked having to choose random letters just for that one hint-less word -- or to think triumphantly that I'd gotten it with two letters, only to discover it was "lovebug," not "lozenge."

Not that that happened to me.

I know some of y'all do the WPs every day. Did you not recall the first or second WPs in this series? This has always been the formula - 4 related words and one random word. (At least they seem random. Perhaps the author sees a connection?)
At least in the 5 puzzles I got, the words were more common than they were previously - I learned the word 'redingote' in one of those.

I'd also prefer the odd word out to be an opposite, or to be related, but not in the same way. I had one of those this time - the odd word was 'cheetah' and the like words were zebra, mustang, jackass and ... umm ... something horse-like that I'd never heard of. (Ok so the words were MOSTLY more common this time. =), As far as 'fairness' though, I think by the 3rd installment we've been warned!

I agree. Also, I had the same phrase as you with "cheetah," etc. The other animal in the phrase was "onager."

I thought Sploofanote did a good job constructing the puzzle so that the odd word was not really just random, but had enough letters in common with the 4 alikes that you could guess the letters in the words you could figure out by category and fill in enough of the odd word to figure it out. At least in the five I had. Thanks, Sploofanote!
