WHY DO TV PEOPLE PEDDLE "PANIC"

It's 9A.M. Saturday morning and I'm scratching my head reading about Central America. My TV is on and I can hear that Tropical storm or Hurricane Gustov is in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico and it could possibly hit anywhere from Pensacola Florida to Corpus Christi Texas. This is the Hurricane season, right ?? No doubt, if the storm comes, oil pumping , drilling and refining will slow up or stop for a few days. The jokers on FOX are talking instant $5.00 per gallon for gas. I heard earlier this week that because of gas prices gas consumption dropped dramatically and there were billions of miles not driven because of it. This is a credit to the American public for conservation and common sense. Instead of pannicking the public with price scares, why not scare the price-fixing SOB's who are causing this problem. I don't want to hear capitalism, it is nothing but Greed.

If all the news was hearts and flowers, nobody would watch. The reason papers and TV lead with news, as opposed to sports or life styles, is scary headlines sell papers and grab viewers attention. If your interest is caught by the headline or lead story you will buy the paper or watch the whole newscast. More eyes = more money for advertisers = more money for the media. Responsible journalism is a thing of the past and every story is an editorial, not news.

I understand what you are saying Donna but these *(&%#$#@$^&*(& Arab gas dealers around here think nothing of jacking gas prices 30-40¢ in a day. I thought there were gouging laws ,but they don't care. In the town North of me, they caught gas stations with crooked pumps that were screwing you out of two-tenths a gallon out of each gallon charged. Try that with a twenty gallon fillup...four gallons @ $4.00 = $16.00 you got gyped out of, only in America. I personally like the Litre method using in Canada. BTW two of those gas stations not only got closed but they were flattened to the ground, need a vacant lot ??

We have had umpteen 'Royal Commissions' study the problem of price-fixing. According to the federal nincompoops, there is no such thing. The fact that gas goes up on the Thursday of a long weekend and back down on Tuesday is just a coincidence not price-fixing, or collusion on the part of the gas companies. Co-inkidink my a** .

Some stations out here were mixing Ethanol with gas and selling it at the higher price. our attorney general is putting a stop to it.

A year or so ago, a couple of stations near the Interstate were flashing a cheap price/gallon on their big lighted signs. What they didn't tell you -- and people didn't notice until it was too late -- was that only one pump out of 10 or 12 pumps had that low, low price. All the others were at a much, much higher price than you would pay if you went a mile into town. The attorney general -- after a LOT of letters to his office and letters to the editor in newspapers -- made them make a large donation to charities in town and I think he had one other condition on that but I don't recall now what it was. Pretty much a slap on the wrist. Guess there wasn't any way to pay it back to the tourists who had been fleeced.

A week or so ago gas was $3.40 a gallon. It's slowly been creeping up and is now about $3.69/gallon. Want to bet that after Labor Day it will go down again until Thanksgiving and Christmas?

Good ole American greed.

A lot of independant stations show a price 20¢ lower than normal. The trick is you have to get a $10.00 car wash. The cheap drive thru kind.

Bill, you are sooo right! Gas station owners and oil companies should not be able to charge above a certain price! While we think about this, why stop there? Lawyers make a ridiculous amount of money, come to think of it, so do doctors. Don't even get me started on how much movie stars and athletes make, it's ridiculous!!! PS bill, it ain't just Arabs doing it, pal.
