1MKS GARAGE WP

I think somebody has been peeking inside my garage and created a word puzzle.
With the exception of 1 (I got stumped on one word - my bad), it was a dead ringer. This reminds me of a Sploofus garage sale thread last year where people were trying to sell their valuables. Enjoyed it!

Great puzzle. I enjoyed it too. Probably got stumped on the same word as Pepperdoc.

Enjoyed your Wordpuzzle, Marsha, but I think I got hung up on the same word as Pepper and Brenda which really wiped me out.

I'm sure I know which word you are talking about. I figured that would throw most people. BUT look at it this way, it couldn't be googled and kept everyone honest.

Marsha
Not true!
Half the field don't get that puzzle; they dont know why we're so steamed about your choice of words and spelling...given that you set such an eclectic puzzle (no one could google this for sure) don't you think you'd have left people felling happier about the puzzle by deleting one word from what was otherwise a splendid puzzle --and had them loving you instead of hating you?
I promise you I was within one letter of dondending the puzzle and giving up for the first time ever. When I read your comment and realized you had deliberately put that word in, instead of being aggravated with myself I just felt aggravated with you.
Nobody wants an easy puzzle; but your scores would have been solid had you not thrown stumbling blocks in the way of your audience. I'm happy to blow complex puzzles like last nights and still feel good about myself and the setter.
That's not what I'm currently feeling.

Barry

Fun puzzle, Marsha

I did poorly though. I did poorly as I am more worried about Ike than proper spelling. I pulled some real boners on spelling errors.

Now, now....It's 9-11. If all we have to hate is a WP, then we're in great shape!

PS - Loved your puzzle!

I live in Tennessee and just have to worry about the frigging tornados in the aftermath of Ike or the nuclear plant a few miles east of me and I don't live in New York City where today hits home with gut wrenching memories so my thoughts are that we cut everyone some slack that might be and were in harms way.

Just a clarifying note. Prior to Garrybl's comment, the posts above it were positive - just noted a word that stumped me, but I'm not complaining about it. I looked it up later and learned what it was. There have been numerous WPs in the past (yes, even before the Plats started writing them) that had words I hadn't heard of before.

I only speak for myself and not behalf of others...take a deep breath...it's good to be alive.

Yes, it is good to be alive. I am hoping like heck that the worst of Ike stays far away from me. On top of that, I am being humble in my remembrance of 9-11.

I have no issues with anyone or any puzzle.

We got that word and it really threw us. Otherwise, an absolutely enjoyable, fun puzzle. I love these kind. (Coulda left that word out though; googled it after the puzzle was over and it has two common spellings, both of which are far-out and neither of which can be found anywhere else in that sentence).

When the Editors were writing WPs they used to be fair game
Now that we have Platipuzzles, Free Speech MUST be positive
otherwise the "negative" people are swarmed and swamped....
It is even inferred that the person with another point of view
must be defective in some way.
Look at the things said to a longtime member....Barry
What's that about????

If anyone here is interested in a "Return of the Camaraderie"
maybe tolerance for the expression of conflicting views should
once again be encouraged....

This comment is especially for the people in the Education field
who seem to have formed a Cabal....

I appreciate the defence but if you post you should expect responses. Free speech n'all.
By the way I did say I thought it was a splendid puzzle bar one word.
(And I'm glad Kaufman did not know the word even if Smoke did!)

As a separate issue I'm sure 'y' and 'j' appear consecutively in words where they are part of separate syllables eg a hypothetical
'demyjohn'...but are there any other words where they appear as part of a single syllable?

I am really sorry that 1 damn word evidently ruined the day for two people. You are welcome to google "nyjer" and this is what you will get: close to 150,000 hits for "nyjer". That does not seem too obscure to me. If your life is that shallow then I do indeed feel sorry for you. Honestly, why do you even bother coming to the site if it irritates you? I lost over 600 million points yesterday......and gee, I didn't even start a thread about it. Maybe I should have but then I have never been comfortable with whining because in my opinion nobody really gives a damn how many points I lost. This is a wonderful site and I love it. But frankly I am sick and tired of all the "poor me" crap. I do not know of one person here who is perfect......including myself. Get a grip or take a hike.

A negative comment was made about a WP
and these were the responses from the members....

....Do you feel better now?
....If you don't feel good about youself, I doubt if it's because of a Word Puzzle
....If all you have to hate....(and then references to 911 and IKE, both of which are irrelevant to this thread)
....We teacher's Rock
....then you can be all by yourself
....that's a good boy
....Barry is out of line
....Get a grip or take a hike
....If your life is too shallow

These are supposed to be discussion threads
in which opinions can be expressed....
They are not a forum for personal attacks by groups

FYI
I was indifferent to this Garage WP
and also lost 200 millions points

It's not a single syllable - NY-jer.

Sorry I jumped all big-sis on you, Barry, but I worry (too much?) about peoples feelings. Shouldn't have worried about Marsha, though - she's tougher than your average cookie. You (we) really put yourself out there when you write one of these puzzles, and you not having had this experience here, I thought you may not appreciate how disappointing and hurtful it can be, to make the effort to write one and submit it, then wait on pins and needles as it makes its way up the list and goes live, only to be hacked to bits and thrown at your feet because someone had a tough puzzle or a bad morning (haven't had that last experience yet, but I've seen it a couple of times and it ain't pretty). I thought of a very recent episode where harsh comments cost us a platinum player and left all sorts of messy drama, and I thought about the editors telling us that if we can't play nice they might stop the program. One of the most interesting things to me about players doing puzzles is how the tone of the comments changed, became more supportive, helped us learn how to make puzzles, helped us learn about each other. It embarrasses me now to think of some of the things I posted about editors puzzles before the plats started doing them. If a puzzle I wrote received the treatment some of those got, I'd never write another one and you could all "bite me" as Marsha would say. Of course everyone is free to express an honest opinion, but sometimes an angry tone creeps in that I just think we'd be better without. If you don't like a puzzle, say it wasn't your cup of tea, and don't try to hold it to a standard of puzzle perfection that doesn't even exist - believe me, the impact of your disapproval will be felt. And relax, there'll be a different one along in a few hours.

That's all.

Exactly. I was always taught that if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. I told someone the other day that I intended on trying to be a little more thoughtful but I guess I dropped the ball also. NO ONE likes to be castigated.. especially in a public forum. You never know HOW someone is going to take something because you are not looking them in the eye. SO......publically......I am saying that I am sorry if I said anything hurtful. AND I will follow the advice of: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

You're trying to draw me into the cabal, aren't you?

I will take that as the enormous compliment it is. Teachers are my heroes and I dreamed of being one when I was a kid. Closest I got was school bus driver.

I think that's why I enjoy doing trivia so much. My stage persona is sort of "raunchy schoolmarm" and I remind my players every Tuesday night that they aren't "missing questions" they're "learning stuff".

Just to clarify what I was getting at earlier... Of course anyone has the right not to enjoy or appreciate a WP. I don't even mind if a comment is posted about it. Afterall, gentle criticism could help one make improvements in the future. However...there's a way to sound off without using vile words like "hate you." That is simply too extreme considering that the author did not set out to purposefully hurt anyone. To the contrary, the puzzle was created for all to enjoy. And yes, we do have a right to exercise our free speech. Perhaps with that right we should also exercise good judgement.

kaelin
Kaelin  (Level: 49.2 - Posts: 1685)

That's the point that got me Bleepy - "everyone hating you" - didn't see anyone hating Marsha

What irritates me is when the "typical top guys" get stumped on something and then it's because an obscure word was used - I mean - once it awhile it must feel a LITTLE good to be challenged and realize you don't know it all.

I have no desire to write another word puzzle - and I think what's sad is when I look back over the last one - ONE person (and I can't remember which top player it was) jumped my butt - and in retrospect I go back and the rest of the comments were great - so there I fell into that trap of thinking "wow hope the smart guys like it" - and then "nope - they sure didn't" - and they were freaking rude - had a difference of opinion in the way that one was paraphrased - I still didn't have a problem with it although I could see the other way too - but when something like "beware of tense issues" - is the first thing out - there were two people that had the tense as an issue - so why did it upset me so much - hell if I know.

My new attitudes is Marsha's. I sent her some bucks today and she's sending me the secret sauce.

Still not doing anymore word puzzles though.

Blogging now....
