Hey! Has anyone heard from Taco?

We were talking in the WR Shout! Box just before Hurricane Ike hit the Gulf Coast. I must have missed her since. I just want to make sure that all is well.

Taco! Give us a holla!

I've sent her a couple of PMs and haven't heard back yet. Most likely, she's without power. Surely she's fine otherwise!

Yes, please let us hear from you as soon as you're able. God bless!

They still have no power. I even went to her school's web site and there is just a message there that says a decision will be made about when to start school again on Thursday at 4. Teachers are to report back on the 22nd and they are tentatively set to reopen school on Tuesday. But that could change. That is all I know but I will keep checking that site. I'm hoping that she and her cats are they can be under the circumstances.

My best friend lives out of Houston in a small town. She said they were told no electricity for 2-3 more weeks, so she went to visit her family in Utah (if you can't stand the heat, etc.) So here's to Taco and hopes there is electricity there much sooner than that! And, well, I guess work some more on that tan in the meantime!

I have checked Taco's school district web site again. They are now slated to reopen the schools on Sept. 29. Hopefully, we will hear from her then. She reports back to school on the 26th. I would think that schools would be a priority for getting their power back.....that and hospitals. This is just awful. I feel so badly for everyone associated with this disaster. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

checked her hometown's website. As of the 17th they were still without power and had a 10pm to 6am curfew. Hope that's almost over. Must be an unbelievable hardship.

there are so many still without power and authorities say it could still be 2-3 weeks until electricity is fully restored in the Houston area.

Reports still say food and water and ice from FEMA still aren't reaching some survivors who need it most.

thousands who evacuated have no idea when they will be allowed to go home or even if they have homes to go to.

it's a horrible mess for everyone and my heart goes out to them.

What can be done?

Thanks for the concern and kind thoughts. My power was turned on today at 5pm. I am thrilled, to say the least. In addition, I am plumb worn out from all of the ruckus for the past week. My power did go off at 2am on Sat. IThen FEMA arrived and I utilized bagsof ice and bananas. I passed on the MRE's and water. Actually, I gave them to a lady with 11 children. FEMA was only giving around 8 meals, or so to people. That family needed them more than I do. They also gave out two bags of ice at a time. The second time I went to the FEMA pod, they were accepting only vehicles. I did not know that, so I had parked and walked. The policeman took pity on me and gave me three bags of ice, and then drove me to my car. What a hassle!
Two days after the hurricane, McDonalds opened up. By then, i was having a caffeine headache. The line of cars extended for nearly amile, but I persevered due to my headache. By the time I reached the order window, I ordered 8 large coffees! I shared them with neighbors. Little things make one happy after a disaster.
Why so many people waited to gas their cars, I will never understand. Lines were everywhere for the rare open gas station. I was delighted to have a full tank.
My power lines went down which explains why I was without power for over a week. It was truly joyous to drive to the grocery store.
I will be returning to work on the 26th. There was damage to some of the schools. There are also children registering with my district who formerly attended the Galveston and surrounding districts. These areas were harder hit by Ike. Ike, I hate Ike!
There were strange accidents and deaths. One mentally ill man was shot and killed by a policeman (nearwhere I live)fter that individual pulled a knife on customers in a store around two days after the hurricane. One lady accidently shot herself. Some looting was reported. A tree branch fell and killed a ten year old right before the hurricane. The father had cut down the limb prior to the hurricane. Terrible!
I am grateful all is well now. Just tired. Thanks again for your notes!

Sorry for all you've been through....People think of the

Oh wow, I am so relieved that you are okay. I kept kicking myself for not giving you my cell phone #. We were all really worried. Glad to hear that you have power too. Did you have any damage to your home? I bet your cats were glad to have you there. Take care.

Again, thanks for the nice comments

Have hauled away many branches, shingles etc. One hassle after another. Cable back on, internet is slow, etc. "Sigh"

Cannot wait to get back in the word round mode!

Glad to hear you're okay, Taco, and I'm sorry about all of the problems you are having due to Ike! We just got a small sample of it here in Tennessee the following Sunday. We lost a complete tree and large branches all over the yard. Looked like a tornado had hit. Thankfully, it wasn't any worse.
