ADS

Is it me or have the ads at the bottom of the page during Word Rounds gotten much larger over the last couple of days?

I thought the same thing - tougher to ignore - I've actually read a few of them

I had NOT noticed that the ads were bigger, but with so many people talking about dropping or not renewing their platinum or even gold memberships, the site has to be supported in SOME way. Ads seem to be a common answer. So if Justin is giving Google a slightly larger ad, I wouldn't blame him.

There must be a balance between allowing potential
new members ( and old members) to play for free---
and keeping the number of members growing....

If that's the intent, then the claim of "*No Banner Ads!" needs removed as one of benefits listed under upgrading to a paying account, and those who have paid for a membership should be informed that the terms are being revised.

Lodi, this is something that Justin has promised to fix. He agreed that paying members should not be seeing these banner ads. However he hasn't been available to make any fixes for a while, which might be changing soon. Personally the ad at the bottom of the page doesn't bother me -- it was the ads at the top that drove me crazy!

they don't bother me except when I'm at home. It took 2 1/2 minutes for my word round to load the other day.

The ad size has actually not changed at all, the ad format has. Google is starting to interlace graphical ads with its rotating text stock. Most times a Google ad consists of some text link(s) that it identifies is relevant to the content of the page, unless the content is extremely vague (i.e. a Word Round) at which time it takes the opportunity to serve up some of its graphical creatives. They are annoying, I agree. Sometimes they are pretty, but usually annoying.

Now the click thru rate for graphical ads, even if they are not relevant to the page content, is higher that that of contextual text ads, and that is why I have been so reluctant to remove them since 1- they are on the bottom of the site and are therefore unobtrusive and 2- the revenue is most certainly needed.

If you note that the ads are growing considerably in size, that would mean that Google is serving takeover creatives which use Flash or DHTML to actually GROW in size when you mouse over them. That would make me very unhappy with Google, soooooo please keep a lookout.

Thank you,
Justin

Justin...it's wonderful to see you posting again, and the ads on the bottom are fine with me if it helps Sploofus Island exist!

I always hear Lisa Simpson's voice to your posts Maurlin and who can top that ?

I noticed this afternoon that the extra ad banner I saw yesterday and this morning are gone. Now it's back to the Google strip which has always been at the bottom of the page.

And yes, it's great to see you around Justin.

My problem with the fact that the ad is at the bottom is that it loads last -- and for dial up users that means everything else "waits" until the whole page down to the tag loads before it shows - some days are worse than others.

I thought the plat members weren't supposed to have the ads (and since I'm on a dial up at home, that is one of the reasons I scrounged up the plat money even though hubby hasn't worked since January) - it was fast during beta - just awesome - felt like I was among the big boys.

The other reason was for writing puzzles, but since I'm not going to do that anymore - next upgrade will probably just be gold

How about a fundraiser?

I say "Bake Sale" at Easy's favorite grocery store.

If the ads are going to be a permanent fixture, then don't just sneak them in. Be up front. Announce to the paying members that there has been a change in their service. Tell them why. Most are going to be understanding and move on. And then go change the pages where you upgrade your account that specifically says there will be no banner ads. That's pretty deceptive. It should say something to the effect that there will be "fewer" ads. If I were a non-paying member and decided to pay for a membership to get rid of the ads, I would be doing a big WTF after I found I still had an ad. Wait, I'm a paying member and I'm still saying WTF.

I suppose you're an editor's nightmare, Kel. Everytime you post, bells, whistles, and alarms go off, editors come sliding down the pole.

To be clear, my intention has never been to keep the Google ads around for paying members.

I am going to bump the item up on my task list which allows for paying members to turn ALL ads off. But it will be done in a way where there is a checkbox which allows for various ad types to be displayed for paying members who are perhaps interested in clicking them.
