VIOLENCE PREVENTION

Here in NJ we have to do an anti-violence week. Does anybody know of a good source for anti-violence lesson plans across the curriculum?

I had to do behavior management/conflict resolution training last night. That was fun. To answer your question, not off hand but I will keep my eyes and ears peeled for info.

I had to attend a "Street Smart" conference yesterday and it was interesting. A National Crime Prevention agent came to talk to educators about the importance of awareness. He taught how to look for signs that a child is surrounded by drugs. I didn't know that hair loss was something to look for but it is. He showed us items that can be bought on the market that are just crazy. For example he had two key chains, one bought from a porn shop for $25 and one from a convenient store for $4. Both look like regular key chains but can be turned into a crack pipe. He showed us a highlighter (also a crack pipe). He showed us lipstick knives and belt buckles with knives. It was insane to see what our children can get their hands on. It really made me think. I just thought it was interesting and wanted to share it my fellow educators/

Crazy isn't it? I am always checking my sons school supplies now. What's even scarier is that a lot of parents (me included) would never think that this would be a possibility.

So true
We are all so clueless about what really goes on. Terrible! Sneakiness has reached a new peak.
I remember in the early '80s when the police came and talked to us on this topic. What he did not know is that most of us were utterly ignorant then about what these various cococtions even looked like. This was when crack was first introduced. I remember thinking "what the heck is that"? AND how in the heck would I even know if a kid had some?
