WTHAI LEADERBOARDS & RETROSPECTIVE FOR SEPTEMBER

INTRODUCTION
------------------------
Please join me in thanking the editors for providing us with such a wide variety of beautiful, thought-provoking, awe-inspiring, sometimes sad, but always fun WTHAI puzzles!

Many thanks also to everyone who has read and contributed to the WTHAI threads!

HOW I CALCULATED
-----------------------------------------
Just like last month, I created two separate leaderboards, one for the WhoTHAIs and one for the WhereTHAIs. I gathered data on winners directly from Sploofus and also kept track of alternate winners, i.e. players whose guesses weren't initially accepted by the system but who received credit later.

The leaderboards are very simple, in that I merely added up how many puzzles a particular player had solved. So, for example, if the number (3) follows a player's name, that means they solved three WhereTHAIs or WhoTHAIs for September, according to my records.

No attempt was made to break ties. Please see August's Leaderboard thread for an explanation as to why. You'll see there were many ties, and whenever they occurred, I arranged players in alphabetical order. Although some players solved several puzzles, no one really dominated in either the Who or the WhereTHAI, and I see that as evidence of the great diversity of the puzzles -- there's something for everyone.

Please be aware that all data comes from my own records gathered from Sploofus, and that it's always possible I've made an error. If so, please let me know.

Announcement of Winners to come shortly!

ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNERS
-------------------------------------------------
This month we have a special guest emcee who has kindly agreed to present the awards. His name is Clark Kent, and he's a reporter for the Daily Planet newspaper in Metropolis. You may have heard of him. He's very sweet, but kind of clumsy and shy. Don't expect any jokes from him. If he gets nervous and starts talking about outer space and red kryptonite and some arch-nemesis named Lex, pay no attention. He's got an overactive imagination. OK, without further ado, heeeeeere's Clark! Please give him a big round of applause!
-------------------
Thank you, thank you, I was so pleased to be asked by Tresgatos to host these award ceremonies. .... (Pssst. Geri, I forget what to say next.)

(It's OK, just wing it. Whatever you say will be super, I'm sure.)

Errrm. (Cough, cough) OK ... so ... let me just refer to these notes. For the WhoTHAIs, there were 80 puzzles and 82 winners (2 co-winners). Six days and 17 puzzles went by before anyone had solved more than one puzzle. For the WhereTHAIs, there were 74 puzzles and 82 winners (8 co-winners).

It's now with great pleasure that I announce the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners for September. The following people will share the podium for the WhoTHAIs:

1st place: (TIE) Larrybus with 6 wins
1st place: Pepperdoc with 6 wins
2nd place: Tresgatos with 5 wins
3rd place: Kateatebate with 4 wins

And the following players will share the podium for the WhereTHAIs:

1st place: Joee with 10 wins
2nd place: Larrybus with 9 wins
3rd place: Uclonewolf3 with 6 wins

Now I'd like to bestow upon them some groovy ... er ... really neat .... er ... way cool virtual clip art awards:

Here's a link to the 1st place gold trophy -- imagine your name engraved on it! http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/7264/goldtrophyzy4.jpg

Here's a link to the award for 2nd place: http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/5928/2ndplaceie3.jpg

Here's a link to the award for 3rd place: http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/9815/3rdplacezb8.jpg

Congratulations to all of the above players and to all the September winners!

OK, I'm turning the microphone back to Geri.

Thanks, Clark! Handsome devil, but ... it's like he's from another world, you know?

Leaderboards and text retrospectives coming up next! Photo gallery retrospectives probably won't be ready until tomorrow.

Hi everyone!
Sorry for the delay in getting the links to the photo albums posted. Before I get to that, I realized I forgot to mention that Sploofuser Auroradartanya gets the "Think Fast" award for solving the Vulcan Park Alabama puzzle after only 1 tile was exposed and 0 incorrect guesses made. Congratulations, and here's a link to that award:

http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/9061/thinkingfastfu0.jpg

I also intended to note that overall for the month of September, our esteemed veteran Sploofuser Larrybus was the WTHAI wizard. His avatar may be Darth Vader, but he's really a nice, helpful guy who probably wouldn't want us to make a fuss over him, but let's do so anyway. Larry, congratulations, and here's some more clipart for you:

PHOTO RETROSPECTIVE
-----------------------------------------
Just like last month, I created photo galleries of all the WTHAI puzzles for September so you could look back and revisit them. What are some of your favorites?

You'll notice that in the captions for each photo, I've posted links to the sources for each one. I did this to ensure that all non-Sploofus viewers know that I'm not the photographer and also to give you the opportunity to read about a person or place, if you missed it the first time around.

Here's the link to the photo album for the WhoTHAIs for September:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/29539486@N03/sets/72157607556889434/detail/

And here's the link to the photo album for the WhereTHAIs for September:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/29539486@N03/sets/72157607563684757/detail/

Those links take you to the full-sized images with titles and captions. You can also look at thumbnails of all puzzles.

EXTRAS:
1. Like last month, I uploaded an example of a puzzle where you could see the progression as it was solved from 1 to 12 tiles -- The Cathedral of Zamora Spain. It was actually solved after 11 tiles, but I thought it was particularly interesting and beautiful, so this is the one you get. Here's a link to that:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/29539486@N03/sets/72157607709355486/detail/

2. I created a "2nd Chance" album containing five WhoTHAIs and five WhereTHAIs at various stages of the solving process. I did this for anyone who wants to test their memory and solving skills. You can study the images at your leisure and see if you can remember the puzzles or solve from scratch. If you get stuck, you can post back to this thread or the main WTHAI thread and ask for help. Or, naturally you can go ahead and find the puzzles you're studying by looking at the main photo albums. Hopefully they won't be too easy or too difficult. If you find this helpful in terms of improving your solving skills, or if you find it just plain fun and would like to see some more like this, please let me know.

Here's the link to the album: http://www.flickr.com/photos/29539486@N03/sets/72157607709557060/detail/

Enjoy everyone!
