CIVILITY

Ya know I've been around this site for quite some time. The recent posts have made my eyes bleed.

We HAVE to maintain a sense of civility here, if not it may has well be a friggin Fox Chat forum. We may not all agree with everyone here, but FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, the insults and the bashing HAVE TO STOP.

I don't particularly care what your political agenda is, but this site (I believe) is based on a shared fondness for TRIVIA, not trying to make others feel bad or trying to convert others to your agenda.

ENOUGH.

Me.

Thanks Kelly, I have been avoiding the chat forum for that very reason. Thank you for saying what many of us have been thinking.

This site was created for folks to have fun and maybe learn a few new bits of trivia not to voice their political opinions and rile up the whole dang sploofus island.

It does change peoples' minds, and their votes as well; it is possible to provide someone with a convincing information one way or the other, else what point would there even be to political campaigns? The whole point of the highly partisan attacks (from either side) is to sway the undecided - a group an unusually high number of people claim to be in in this cycle. If some are trying to do that with misinformation, they should be called on the facts for the good of everyone. No one should want to base their vote on a lie.

When "Salty Dog" becomes "Rabid Dog" we are all the less for it....whether politics, religion or which style of barbecue is better.

I'm delighted to have people with a strong sense of opinion, and equally delighted that they care enough to spar in spirited debate.

But I lament supposedly caring folks using their opinions to personally attack those who disagree.

There's a huge difference between saying "Your support of candidate Z is wrong because" ... and "You're a monkey-brained moron because you support candidate Z."

One trail leads to debate, the other to ruin.

Chick and Rev (whose name is also Chick, BTW) have said what needs to be said here, and those of us who agree need to stand up and be counted!

Please let's stop the insults.

The United States is not the only homeland of Sploofusers here. Canada; UK; Australia are also very well represented among the membership. Every one of us has politics influence our lives. So you can't escape politics- you can ignore it or you can try to make a difference. Either way, you're affected by it.

The election for the POTUS [I learned that from the TV series "West Wing"] is the most contentious and hot button item now, but we still need to respect the opinions of everyone who takes the time to read the threads and replies in some manner.

If you notice, the number of "views" is well above the "replies" , so some folks just read or browse the thread and either absorb it or ignore it.

Smoke said it perfectly about reaching out to undecided voters--- but let's do it with powerful words and facts- not disrespect.

To lower the "temperature" - let's hear from someone from Switzerland to start discussing your political landscape.
Any one first?

There is a VAST chasm of difference between discussing important political issues of the day, and personal bashing and name-calling, and it's the second item I *believe* Kelly is protesting. I have no doubt she'll correct me if I'm wrong.

I've been fascinated by politics all my life. One of my earliest memories of any kind is of hearing the election returns on the radio with my staunchly Dixiecrat family as Eisenhower was elected; I was five. I was captivated by the 1960 election, and who I am not only as an American, but as a person, were shaped by that next turbulent decade. I've voted in every presidential election since 1968. Once I even voted Republican, but never mind that now. Never in all that time (with the exception of holiday dinners with in-laws) have I felt I couldn't freely and reasonably discuss the issues of the day in whatever area of my life i find myself. This is my first election at Sploofus, but it never occurred to me that a vocal faction (Americans, no less) would want to ban political discussions here.

Eliminating discussion of politics and religion is just as much censorship as eliminating profanity and sexual content - probably more so because it stifles thought as well as language. There may be people avoiding the forums because they are so sensitive to discord they can't bear even to see the titles of threads containing political opinions, but I recommend they simply avoid those threads in which they don't wish to participate, but please tolerate the presence of those discussions for those of us who do feel comfortable discussing the issues and the candidates. Just completely ignore this thread and go post a movie quote or start a thread about vegetables, or tea.

If the forum is to be stripped of all substance in the name of fun and not ruffling sensitive feathers, then I'll be the one who loses interest in posting here.

Actually, while it happens infrequently, I know that I have changed people's views on important political issues over the years. Moreover, as a citizen of the most powerful nation on earth, whose power is all too frequently used for ill -- I feel an ethical responsibility to speak out against the American Empire and the dangerous paranoid nationalists who run things. In short, I completely reject the position that politics (or, for that matter, religion) is a topic to be avoided in conversation.

Since it is very easy to avoid reading threads that are politically charged on this site, I really don't understand the calls for censorship or self-censorship in this regard. If the political threads offend you, don't read them.

As to those who would call, for instance, supporters of Obama "idiots" or "children" or "socialists", this type of name calling is obviously not effective as a device to persuade people to one's point of view -- as witnessed by the intense negative reaction when such rhetoric is used. I am not shy about advocating for political issues, but I simply don't bother engaging in debate with people whose method of argument is to castigate those who disagree as "idiots", etc.

If profanity and sexual content go, so do I.

There is a place, including Sploofus, for a rational, reasoned discussion on any subject. Unfortunately, politics is rarely rational or reasoned. If we can refrain from insulting each other, we may learn something new about our election choices.
We are having an election here, England will be turfing Labour shortly, Israel just got a new PM, Austria and Spain held elections this year. Many countries are making a new choice this year, and we should be able to hear each others opinions without taking it personally.
I'm interested in what Americans think of McCain and Obama - the choice of US President will greatly affect Canada. I need to know who has a plan for the economy, for Afghanistan, for the Middle East and Africa. All of these things affect my day - the more information available, the better choices we make.
I will continue to engage all of you in discussions on politics, sports, even religion - I just want a civil discussion.

I have to comment. Since I joined six months ago, I've been reading the threads (and especially the political threads) here and have one conclusion. This group of Sploofus members writes with fantastic grammar, punctuation, and spelling plus excellent sentence structure and interesting content. I've been impressed not only with what you've so cogently said, but also how intelligently you've written it. Your teachers should be proud!

I'm a member of various Q&A and community sites. The only one that outdoes this one is a grammar site's boards, including its general interest board.

Donna, Tony did good today. I like this race to the chase less every year. I don't like watching a race with 43 drivers and only 12 have a shot at the big enchalada. Kyle Bush is out already when he had a 400 point lead. He could've raced in reverse and won it. Go back to Winston Cup rules and start over. That's just me.

Nope, Smokey got me right. I think there is always room for a lively debate, but when it comes down to insulting people and being uncivilized about it, it pisses me off. (I'm very eloquent).

I'm all for profanity and inappropriate behavior, but not at the expense of others. I find no joy in calling people names or insulting them (unless of course they are Dodger fans).

I made the Sarah Palin "bun" comment because Art called her "hot", not to insult her, but just to counter Art's point.

If YOU italicize and don't close out your tag, then everybody's comments after you are italicized, right?

How do you think that makes the rest of us feel who aren't "in the know?"

Jank your sarcasm is not welcome in this instance. Most BBs I've seen that support HTML have controls built in so that anyone can use them in a post. Not everyone is going to take the time to learn, nor has the time to learn HTML but might still like to participate in the feature?

This is an example of the disconnect that has been increasing here at Sploofus which I don't take lightly and I certainly don't appreciate snarkly remarks from other members when I ask a question.

jank0614

Oh my goodness, Kim. I certainly didn't mean that at you in any way. I apologize for offending you.

I had been posting above how much I've love to know how to do those things and where could I learn. And of course you have no way of knowing I had been PM'ing with others about learning (please see above posts from me). I'm a total dunce about it, and I've even had a very shallow programming class in college and posted a website for AOL in the old days - but all I did was fill out a template every day..

My post was really a backhanded attempt at humor toward those miracle workers above our posts who can do that stuff. I don't get any of it. I might as well be watching soap operas for the good it does me to try! But that's where they show all the ITT commercials here in Texas - during soap operas.

Disconnect? I'm about as disconnected with those who can work those html wonders as one can be. But I certainly marvel at it.

bold, italics and underline are pretty easy
you use the less-than and greater-than symbols

to make italics you use < i > and then to end it you use < / i > (I wrote these with spaces hoping they would NOT turn into code, but appear as the symbols)

italics test

for bold you substitute "b" for the "i", and for underline you use "u"

Colors and size changes are tougher because you need to memorize more codes (or have a good website of codes - I used to have one I used but cannot find it now ) For the banners, you just have to find a website that gives it to you.

It's not a secret or a conspiracy or anything special that only certain people can do.

Sorry if I jumped to the wrong conclusion Jank. It would be helpful if when there are new features added that a post under the Hotwire or someplace be added so that people are aware. Some "how-to" info such as Suzer posted above might be included in the post and questions could be answered.

Google "HTML code" (without the quote marks), and you will pull up a number of sites that have lists/charts of coding instructions. Print out a chart and post it near your computer. Voila! (or Viola! if you wish)

Suzer 'n' Smoke - there are a lot of color codes, but there are ... 15? 16? basics (red, blue, green, yellow, purple, etc.) that you can just type in quotes.

Fudy - just type: < font color="teal" >
and then type whatever text you want to be colored. Only don't put the spaces after and before the 'less than' and 'greater than' signs.
When you're done, type

Easy peasy lemon squeezy

pafork

Oops. Typed that wrong. Or ... accidentally typed it correctly.
That last part should be: when you're done, type < /font >
but again, without the spaces.

When you're done, do NOT type "Easy peasy lemon squeezy", in any colors.

p.s. My limited knowledge of HTML came from a 7 or 8 year old book. I was checking out Kelly's code and found there are now many more than 16 colors you can type in as text.

p.p.s. Holy Moses Kelly! How did you not go cross-eyed??
