YOU'D THINK I'D HAVE BETTER THINGS TO ARGUE ABOUT....

I am having another disagreement with my sister along the lines of the whole popsicle/popcorn stand variety.
Is the phrase "cop a squat" or "pop a squat?" An internet search yields both terms.
Thanks, Bethany

I always used (and heard) "cop a squat"-as in "take a seat". However I found that it was kind of regional for slang. When I lived in Connecticut, it was a very common phrase. When I moved to Maine and used this phrase for the first time, I was looked at with horror. My new friends had never heard the phrase and were not quite sure what I was telling them to do

Yuppie moves his family to Maine for work reasons, goes up a few days ahead of them to set things up. The nearest house is 3 miles away. Neighbor shows up to welcome the new resident, invites him to a Welcome-to-Maine party in his honor. The yuppie, honored, accepts and the neighbor says, 'I should warn you though, there'll be some heavy drinkin'. Dude says, 'You kidding, I love to tie one on!'. Neighbor says, 'There'll prolly also be some fightin'. Yuppie says, 'Hey I can hold my own in a fight, don't worry about me'. Neighbor says, 'And a course there'll be a good deal of sex'. Yuppie's like, whoa, his family's not coming for days, sounds good to him. Asks the neighbor if he should bring any food, booze, whatever.
Neighbor says, 'Nah it's just gonna be the two of us'.

I have always heard "cop" a squat.

Cop is slang "take" like cop a look or attitude, or "grab" like cop a snack or feel.

"pop" is usually impact like pop in the nose or bursting, like pop in, pop up or pop a cap (Shoot a gun).

google gave me over a million hits on cop and not much of mothing on pop.

I'm still trying to convince my brother that "Play it by ear is" not "Play it by year."

LOL good one Jedley...as for the squat thing, never heard it. Went to a concert once and asked a guy near an empty seat if it was saved, he said"No, but I'm prayin' for it".
