Not sure but think this might be Barry's first WP - if so he is off to an auspicious start - really terrific puzzle

I THOUGHT I knew what the mystery was except one clue didn't fit at all...can't wait to find out what it meant

Good puzzle!

I need an explanation for this puzzle, too. I had two puzzles that seemed to be linked, but the other three had no relation to the others that I could find. Whatever the mystery link is is still a mystery as far as I'm concerned.

Great job Garry- your first w.p is wonderful. I'm pretty sure I knew your link reference from the start, so I played this puzzle well.
Some very helpful clues too.
You deserves kudos and peppermint patties for your effort.

All my clues fit and the link was there from the number 1 puzzle. Great work Barry.

No problem at all with the mystery, and the clues were crystal clear. I just had a bit of a problem coming up with some of the descriptive words. GREAT WP!!!

Wonderful job! Clever "missing link" - all my clues fit and I figured it out on the second clue. Hard to believe this is your first puzzle. Looking forward to many more.

I enjoyed your WP a lot, Barry, and had no trouble figuring out the mystery link. Good clues and interesting phrases. I learned quite a bit as well about the mystery. Thanks for a lot of fun!

I had a misspelling but it didn't cost me any moves.

Great job Barry! Knowing what one of your interests is, the mystery game wasn't too hard to figure out. Thanks for a nice WP.

Thanks for the nice comments.
As for me; I've learned that its possible to take 102 guesses by filling in all the letters on my five puzzles one by one. Who'd a thought I was so longwinded? Dont all speak at once.
Next puzzle heading for the piepline; and thanks to my editor for his/her help (oh and anyone else who knows me)

Since the puzzle is over, I can say this without fear of giving anything away: only two of my puzzles (the second and fifth ones) mentioned bridge at all, and the other three said things about famous people, but I had no idea any of them played bridge, and the puzzles did not refer to bridge, so it all seemed totally disconnected. If the puzzles had all been about the people's links to bridge, it would have made sense to me, but without any reference to that in most of them, the link among the five puzzles remained mysterious.

Perhaps Barry will list all the puzzles. Quite frankly when I saw the puzzle and saw "mystery link" I just knew the link was going to be Bridge. Barry=Bridge. It will be fun to try and figure out the next one now that Bridge is gone, or maybe not.

All of the ones I did had a bridge connection.

Rough recollection of the WPs I had:

Gates and Buffett played together and against each other
Chairman Deng Xiaoping made it a required subject in school.
Summerset Maugham (I didn't realize until the WP that his last name ends with an M, not an N) included it in his novels. (In "Rain" the characters spent 3 days playing both poker and bridge.)
Isaac Mizrahi played it in NY when he wasn't designing for Liz Claiborne
I don't remember the Michael Palmer WP, but he plays tournament bridge in his spare time.

Barry- This lame attempt at recreating the mystery/bridge WPs I had should make you spring into action to tell us all 10 of what you ACTUALLY wrote.

I once played Sadie Hawkins in Rain - it's a wonderful part - you get to play both sides of the madonna-whore archetype. The stunning young Joan Crawford played her in the film in the early 30s.

I was pretty sure going in that it was going to be bridge.

I was just messing with you about the spelling, Barry. Solid puzzle. Bring 'em on!
