PERSONAL ATTACKS ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED

From anyone. Period.

If you believe that a personal attack has occurred and we have not taken action against it, submit a support ticket. The public forum is not the place for such attacks, whether you believe they are justified or not.

Better late than never, I suppose. I have no "side" nor do I take issue with anyone. Just seems the site is in sorry enough shape without Justin seeming to care about it to have posts and/or topics which cause hurt feelings. Some people's abscence is noted and missed more than others probably because of the length of time they have been active and their participation in the forums. Linda

Think if you are really quick you might catch a couple of Tex's posts before they are deleted.....by whomever. No law or rule about calliing the political candidates or past leaders names though-just members here, I guesss1

Linda, I am not pretending to speak for Justin or anyone else, but I think the general rule anywhere is that public figures -- whether Colin Powell, Tom Cruise, Paris Hilton, George W., Obama or McCain -- are "fair game." They know going into show business or politics or whatever public arena that they will be the brunt of jokes, rumors and name calling (although there are lines that need to be observed there, also).

But individuals on this site should NOT be called names or the victims of hostility. I think common decency would dictate that.

So the shorter version of my comment about name calling of politicans vs. Sploofus members: Public figures, OK within limits, Sploofus members, never.

Again, I have no candidate in this race. However, I cannot see where Tex nor Diva are guilty of name-calling. They voiced an opinion that a player was the cause of other players leaving-exception being Tex's original post calling Obama supporters "Idiots" and "Morons". Perhaps if players were not also editors this issue would not have arisen. I know they volunteer but this is a great BIG minus-Linda

I posted this before but the thread got deleted so here goes- count me among the players who have never felt comfortable with the idea of editors posting as players, no matter who they are.I don't think there are many editors who abuse their position, but I believe there are some who do and it has discouraged some players (not all obviously) from posting here.

I know at one time this was joked about as one of the "mysteries of Sploofus", but things have gotten out of hand lately.
Editors have an important job here and I think an explosion of this kind was bound to happen sooner or later.

I was never an avid supporter of the political threads, infact was one of the first to say, this isnt the right forum, BUT I also agree that people should voice their opinions if they wish -- I was and am a strong supporter of discussion without ranting or name calling. I also have made an attempt to post postive and upbeat posts, IE an alternative to political posts -- and I commend others, like Marsha for doing so too. I applaud the posters who post intelligently and who can speak their mind without tearing others down. My theory is, if you dont like polictical posts, dont read them. And if you dont like them, then post something else, if nothing else, it may bump them out of the forefront.

Kimoira is correct. Under the current system if you are one of the player/edtors you should have the sense to shut your mouth in the forums about anything of real importance or having emotional baggage. Some have done that and it is appreciated and can bring no claims of abuse of power or censorship which is certainly the case here-Linda

Sploofus Editor

This has nothing to do with the possibility of editors being involved or not. Posts I have begun deleting I am doing so because I am drawing a hard line for the time being. We have asked nicely for the rancorous threads to stop. Politics and religious discussions have sadly crossed across the line of rational discourse, and to be sure that's a tricky matter to decide. But the one thing that is not tolerable is when someone, ANYONE uses Sploofus for some personal vendetta against another player.

As I said, I am now going to spend my time going through each and every thread deleting anything that even comes close to the line.

I agree that some of Tex's posts, i.e., were rough and aggressive, but I also believe the posts should have been allowed to stand. I don't claim it's a First Amendment issue because that doesn't apply to private actors. The more meddlesome censorship policy is apparently being adopted because of reasons some people have ascribed to their departure or threatened departures. I would only suggest that you also consider that for some of us, including myself, one of the reasons I prefer this to other trivia sites has been the relatively minimal censorship.

Seems to me that the unwritten rule could profitably apply to Sploofus that works so well in most dinner clubs or whatever that I belong to - just keep off religion & politics.
Both are subjects within which logic and commonsense often disappears out of the window and can cause otherwise normal colleagues to become snarling maniacs!
There are plenty of other newsgroups - to which I also happily belong - in which such subjects can be gloriously vented!

Perhaps, then, the unwritten rules would better serve by being written, and left as a sticky at the top of the board.

I have refrained from wading into the fray about candidates (though I certainly have an opinion) simply because it was clear that personal attacks were bubbling beneath. And since I can give as good as I get, I wasn't about to devolve the conversation any further.

With 45,000 or so members, it's inevitable that the board would eventually mix folks with unmixable outlooks.

The question now is: if the cow's out of the barn as TEx notes, should we muck out the place or build the cow a new home?

For me it has nothing to do with politcs. It has been stated that editors are never guilty of name-calling nor abuse of their position-I disagree.not all but some have. The integrity of all editors is now in question because of the behavior of the minority. Power must be coupled with responsibily. The politics has just brought to the surface a problem which has been here for a long time.Yes, Felix, the motto seems to be exactly that-agree with me or your wrong and I have the POWER to shut you up-Linda

My main thought on some of the above is that, yes this is a trivia site (and politics/religion decidedly are not trivial), but out on the politico blogs, it's difficult to find useful information or even thoughtful opinions because as soon as they begin, they quickly disintegrate into the most disgusting manure. They are full of the really bad attacks (what transpired here is like baby food compared to their truffles – though I don’t mean to belittle the pain some have felt here as less than out there). They quickly fall full of cursing and name calling and little of anything else.

Also - though this sounds awful, but it's useless for me to apologize ahead of time, so here goes: You don't know the intelligence level of those people ahead of time, so I don’t trust their opinions as much.

Here, it is as though friends, colleagues, and acquaintances are seated in a huge boardroom trying to hammer out details. And based on your body of work on topics as vast as possible, I know that I can trust you guys to be intelligent and to have put forethought into your discourse.

Sure there's the occasional potty break. But discussing this stuff amongst people you respect for their intellect, yet honestly care for them as you know their personal struggles and triumphs and loves and hates, makes discussion here something actually worth the time to read through and join.

Intellect never completely agrees on details. That's a healthy thing.

And contrary to the opinion of some, nothing I've ever written here was an attempt to change anybody's vote or belief. I say what I say because these things I do and believe are just the basis of who I am. When you write what you say, I'm learning about you, the basis of who you are. If you are bored with me and wish I’d shut up, I can only agree. I get bored with me and tell me to shut up too sometimes. I haven’t figured out how to get away from me for a vacation yet. You can just close the window.

Knowing more about your thoughts and beliefs and thought processes just help me know you better and thereby respect you more - not less.

Though I love the Ackroyd/Curtin point/counterpoint SNL stuff - "Jane, you ignorant slut" - I'm decidedly against that strategy! That only appears when we're out of good ideas, I think.

If you take away all mention of politics and religion in these (maybe not hallowed, but definitely educated) Sploofus Halls, I will miss it deeply. I'll live with it, and certainly not go away (tough, live with it!), but I'll miss it.

Smoke told me once, in her support for abortion rights and my absolute pro-life stance, that if her support of abortion made her less moral than I, she could live with that. I can live with it if it makes her MORE moral than I. I learn. It makes me think through the body of her work, her beliefs, her opinions, as a human, and I grow as a human because...

Iron sharpens iron.

It might be a painful process, but so much in life that is good for us IS painful.

I've almost gone bankrupt 3 times in my life (well, if you can call it bankrupt when a lower middle or upper lower class person is on the verge of losing what little they have). But today, because I went through the pain of how miserable that felt as I've dug my way out each time, I can appreciate it more not being on the edge. I'm still upper lower class or lower middle class, but unless Fort Worth starts firing teachers as Dallas did, I'm not going to lose my house this week, and I've finally paid off my bills. I can still afford to feed the dogs and cats and buy the occasional Peppermint Pattie for myself (ok, you caught me. I lied. I buy the PPs for me FIRST before the dog/cat food.)

I dont want to ban political discussions. But I'd draw your attention to the following interpretation of the facts.
I played on sploofus for two years and in that time I remember two peope leaving; Linda came back, and after a row about WPs a non-editor setter left. I think that last case was an exception; I hope so.

Since the political threads started at least 2 very valued members were so upset they left; one has come back but not without some effort from the members. The cause and effect seems ovious. The bad language and insults only started when the political threads began.

Now I'm not saying all the political threads are bad and or unreadable. I AM saying they generated higher levels of anger and angst and encouraged an environment where tempers flared and unforgivable things were said.
I have a solution though; sploofus has to create a 'hot potato' forum. If you enter it (and I'm sure I never would) you acknowledge in advance that you may be offended.... it can still be policed but you remove the threads that bore quite a number of the members and dont expose them to temptation to get involved and get upset. Everybody wins except Tex doesn't get to convert the whole membership -- only those who enter that forum. Which I'm sure he'd agree is appropriate since they just get to make one more choice.

Jank, thanks for your thoughtful post.

One comment: "Jane, you ignorant slut" works in satire, which sometimes doesn't translate well in written word only (i.e., Sploofus). However, there have been some classic rivalries here: Chick vs. Slick; Lodi vs. Smaug; Smoke vs. Felix. Well, I THINK they were just poking fun at each other.

The distinct forum idea for controversial topics seems an excellent solution.

I must say that it is always my hope - quixotic though it may be - to change the political opinions of my fellow citizens when I undertake political posts. I don't delude myself and believe this is common - especially with respect to an fundamental change, but I'm willing to start with just nibbling around the edges and perhaps being of some influence on those who do not hold firm views on particular political topics.

As "he who politically pontificates" I like the idea of a Hot Potato room. That way, If you don't want to read it, don't go there.

Also, it would give the Editors the ability to say, " due to the volatile nature of this discussion, it has been removed to the Hot Potato room,"

It would allow them to not have to censor as much.....

That being said, would a Hot Potato room allow someone to call me a Ratt Bastard? (I'm ok with that) or A Democrat (NOT ok with that) ?

And the fact that Chick and Slicko are BOTH cheaters should be common knowledge.
