WORLD SERIES MEMORIES

Last year I created a quiz concerning my World Series memories but never submitted it. Seems that life affecting events always seem to happen at this time of year. The narrative part of the quiz was way too long so decided to post my memories here. Feel free to comment on or add some of your own. This is the first there will be a new one every game.

Used to live in a third floor corner suite in a hi-rise apartment block in Ottawa, Ontario. On 27 October, 2002, while sitting down watching game 7 between the Anaheim Angels and the San Francisco Giants, after the Angels had taken a 4 to 1 in lead in the fourth inning, a noise was heard outside. Directly below my balcony I could see the body of an adolescent boy lying prostrate across the handicapped parking zone indicator. He was of Asian descent, barefoot, had on knee length athletic pants, and a t-shirt. Dressed in pajama bottoms, t-shirt and slippers I ran down the side steps while phoning 911. Out into the cold night and was first on scene. Took his pulse, there was none and then noticed three separate rivers of blood leading from his head. After a secondary examination I lifted his head. There were pieces of brain and bones stuck to the asphalt and suffice it to say the left side of his face was unrecognizable. Slowly the head was lowered down.

A car stopped and two men stepped out. One knew who the teenager was. He was sixteen and his family had arrived from Bangladesh six months previous. They lived on the 11th floor. The police arrived and gave me some forms to fill out. I went back into the apartment to fill out the forms and check on the game. Still 4 to 1 for the Angels. Went back out and gave my forms to the cops, turned to go back inside when someone grabbed my upper arm. It was a reporter. I gave him a short interview that was published and returned to my flat.

How ironic, a team named “Angels” won the game and their first and so far only World Series. At 1 AM a vehicle from the morgue came and took the body away. As they lifted the head a sucking sound could be heard where the dried blood had caused the head to adhere to the pavement. The apartment crew covered the bloody area with kitty litter and next day hosed it down. This year the whole parking area was redone and a new glow in the dark handicapped-parking indicator has been added. Five years and it is hard not to think of the lad when looking down upon the parking lot. This summer our family moved to a home of our own.

Thank youi for reading his. Have a great day.

1989. Had just moved back to Indiana from SF bay area. It was SF vs Oakland. While watching the pre-game (I don't think they had started yet) the screen went black. We were so p*ssed off thinking the network screwed up. Then they announced that a large earthquake had occurred. We spent the rest of the night worrying about and trying to reach friends and relatives. What a nightmare.

The game had not started. It was 4 minutes after ABC had gone on the air, and the announcers were in the middle of some pregame analysis.
