I am not a huge sports fan, but I love least MY team.

What I am wondering is what is the philosophy behind rooting for a team that is not "your" team.

I mean, in the World Series, should I be rooting for the Phillies, as they are in the NL and MY team is in the NL, so I should be true to my League? I think I should feel that way, but I don't!

I'm mad at Philly for making it to the playoffs when my team didn't, and I want to see them BEATEN DOWN by an AL team!

What is the general consensus here?? If you are NOT a Phillies or Tampa fan - who are you rooting for and why?

Some fans root for the league, the team, the players or even the team's uniform. Except for the Yankees, I personally hate the American League. In the National League, I like the Cubs and Dodgers. I absolutely despise anything to do with the Mets or Cardinals (Right Chick !!). Watching and enjoying the World Series takes a good baseball fan. Some of my favorite Series were with the Dodgers and Yankees and there was a great series in 1968 between Detroit and the Cardinals. You have to be a baseball purest to really appreciate a set of games with teams you've never watched or liked. That, or you don't have cable TV.

Bruce from Atlanta here.
I'll root for the Phillies this time, since the Braves aren't playing.

Thanks for asking my opinion.
Tomahawk chops to y'all.

I'm an American League fan and a Yankee fan, have been all my life. I couldn't root for the AL though when the Red Sox were in Series since I hate them.
The Phillies did a great job last night shutting down Upton and Longoria who didn't perform at the plate. There's going to be some rain here in the east this weekend. I wonder if it will have any effect on the Series?

It goes without saying that I am a true Phillies fan. Born and raised in South Philadelphia, I used to go to the games with my dad at the old Connie Mack Stadium and then to Vet Stadium. Win or lose I have followed the boys of summer and one of my happiest memories was of the 1980 World Series.

Phils take game one of the series but we are all being cautiously optimistic here in Philadelphia.

Go Phillies Go!!!!

Since the Expos left (boo), I'm stuck with the Boo Jays. This year I'm rooting for the Phillies 'cause of Matt Stairs. A good New Brunswick boy deserves a World Series ring for all his hard work as a pinch hitter. That has to be one of the hardest things to do, sit on the bench for two hours and then get a hit.

Go Phillies!!!

Donna, In Chicago and I'm sure in Toronto, they have batting cages under the stands. It has to be the mental adjustment coming in at a crucial time of the game. Pinch hitting is a bear. I think Stairs played on the Cubs for a season, he pinch hit then, too.

This is my second installment of my World Series memories. The first was posted in Trivia Tangent. This is one of the non-dramatic ones, but is posted here because it concerns the Phillies. Heck it may even be boring. Like watching a home movie. As mentioned in installment one this was originally a quiz. However the narrative portions were so long I decided to use the questions as posts minus the question.

I have heard that in 1980 the Expos should have finished first in the East instead of the Philadelphia Phillies. They chocked. People have told me that the Houston Astros should have won the National League pennant that year. They blew leads. Newspaper accounts read after the fact stated George Brett had a severe case of hemorrhoids that caused him to miss games and play injured during the 1980 World Series. Heard the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Kansas City Royals and won their first world championship The reason I have heard this is because I never saw the 1980 World Series. The only time not seeing even one game. Was serving aboard a Canadian Destroyer and we were out on patrol during September and October. Perhaps it will be shown one day on ESPN Classic.
We did a brief stop in England and Ireland but to get up to date news I had to make a trans Atlantic phone call to my parents. Did not know who won the Series till two days after it happened. The ship did not have the capacity to access Armed Forces radio as some US ships might have. Our only source of news was the Teletype copy of the news placed in the mess hall and that was usually stained with food especially syrup (used for pancakes). Later in December it was Thursday evening till most of us found out John Lennon had been murdered the previous Monday night.
The Phillies were the last of the classic 16 teams to win a World Series. If the Phillies win tonight, tomorrows post will cover the great series of 1993. If not it will revisit the last World Series Red Barber ever saw, the one in 1992.

Thank you for reading this. Have a great day.

As a die-hard Saints and Cubs fan, I have to root for TB because I always back the underdog (read: losers)

I think in this case, it's hard to decide who the underdog is actually. From a historical perspective, the Phillies seem to get the nod since they were the first team to record their 10,000th loss. But then on the Rays side, this the very first time to make the playoffs in their entire existence.

Baseball commentators have an annoying habit of always picking the AL over the NL which would put the underdog status back on the Phillies. One particularly lame writer said that this was the first series in the post-season where the Phillies had to face a real major league team. (rolling my eyes with disgust)

Well I used to always say that I couldnt wait to get baseball in Pittsburgh again -- but when I found out that last year our attendence for games was 65% and the Bays was 60%, I guess somebody is watching the games -- it just further proof that Pittsburgh is nuts about sports!
Go Phillies!

Smack you with the puck, shmuck! Invite hubby to your house for hockey games, please. That way I don't have to watch it.

Go baseball!

The job Joe Maddon has done with the Rays this year is one for the managerial history books.
However, if Charlie Manuel were to call on the venerable vet Matt Stairs in the bottom of the ninth in game seven
and Stairs hit a walk-off home run to win it all, I'd be a happy man.

Stairs should have been the DH.

Although from the South I have been a Yankee's fan. In the mid 60's CBS owned the Yankees and show them most every Saturday. I thought that their logo was sooooo cool. I was maybe 10 when I discovered that it was just an N and a Y. Mantle, Maris, Boyer, Ford, Howard and Pepitone were great fun to watch. I am truly a Yankee fan as I stuck with my team even when players that I dislike became Yankees or in the late 60's early 70's when they were beyond. If the Yanks aren't in the Series than I pull for the American League unless it's the Red Sox.
