I came home during lunch today to check on my 15 year old cocker spaniel, Rusty, who was recently diagnosed with stomach cancer. He was laying on the kitchen floor. He raised his head and looked at me when I walked in. I petted him on his head and just died right there. It was like he waited for me to come home to say goodbye. My heart is breaking. I know he is in a better place now but it still hurts so bad. I have him wrapped in his favorite blanket waiting for help to come to bury him. I keep hoping he will wake up again but its not happening,

Oh, dear Elaine, here's hugs - ((())) There's really nothing to say that will make it better, but I so wish there was.

Maybe he waited to say goodbye, and he waited for you before he could let go, or he wanted to turn over the duty of watching the house, a job well done to the end. Maybe for all those reasons he waited for you to come home, to feel your hand once more, telling him all was okay.

I've always had to "make the decision" with our dogs, so I'm glad you were spared that. I'm very, very sorry for your loss.

It's really strange. I always kinda felt like this was his house and he just let me sleep here. I was ALWAYS at work and he was ALWAYS home waiting to welcome me no matter how late it was. Such unconditional love. The house is gonna feel pretty empty without him. The fish in the aquarium could care less if I come home or not.

All pets should be like some of those tropical parrots or macaw thingys, they live to be 70-75 years old. Or, throw a sea turtle in the backyard pool and it'll live to almost 200. Really sorry for your loss, we know how you feel.

I knew time had come for me to make the decision about putting him down, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it yet. I guess he wanted to spare me that hurt. I had to put my last pet down when he was 18 yrs old and I thought I would die too. I guess you feel guilty either way you go. I felt guilty for putting my last pet down but I still feel guilty about making Rusty linger for my own selfish reasons. There is just no easy answer.

Thank you so much for all of your hugs and letting me vent and cry on your shoulders. I just can't stop going into the kitchen to check on him, like he's going to wake up. He's getting so cold even though I have blankets on him. I guess he's really gone.

I am so very sorry. We lost one of our cats last week to cancer. You know, I bet they are together, running around and waiting for us. My heart breaks for you. It is so hard to lose our pets. I'm sitting here with tears dripping, wishing there was some way I knew exactly how to comfort you. Take care.

I'm so so sorry Elaine....all of us Pet Owners know what you are going through.
We all wish they could live just as long as we do.....I do know what you are feeling.

Years ago I had a 17 year old dog. One day she was chasing squirrels, then she
suddenly went blind and from then she was struggling to stay alive. We had a long
talk about how it was time to let go. I would hurt like hell for a long time - but was
ready to let her go visit her friends in Doggy Heaven.
A few days later, I woke up to start the day, she wobbled towards me to say
"good morning" as usual. Then she lay down, bled a little from her mouth, and died.

Rusty wanted you to know he loved you and knew he was loved. He waited long
enough to let you know you shouldn't feel any guilt or feel you could have done
something. Stomach Cancer is very painful and now he is at Peace.....

God Bless You Elaine and I hope you will soon feel comfort and peace yourself

Please don't get upset with me for continuing to babble on. I am here alone with him and I keep thinking that I should be doing something but I don't know what that is. I just cant go back to work today, I've vacuumed and swept the kitchen and washed the dishes and talked to him. My X mother-in-law will be here soon and then I can use her shoulder to cry on for awhile. My friend has gone to build a box to bury him in. What can I do ?

The consolation I always find whether it be a person or a pet is they are not suffering anymore, and you wouldn't want them to suffer.

Elaine, I'm so sorry to hear about Rusty. I had a 13-year-old cocker spaniel, B.J., and faced the same decision you had. I don't think there's any right or wrong in this. You do what you think is best and know that Rusty is at peace. My heart goes out to you.

I'm so sorry Elaine. I know you must feel like your house is so empty tonight. It hurts so much when they leave us but in time you'll remember the joy Rusty brought to your life. He knew you'd be home and he waited for you. That shows a special love that he had for you; he wanted to say goodbye.

Just think about his faithfulness and love. And if you need to talk to someone during the night, my guess is there's always someone available to lend a supportive shoulder, if not in Salty Dog, then maybe in shout in Word Rounds.

Take care.

The loss of a true friend, so as Rusty, is always devastating. One of the only two times I ever saw my dad cry was when he had to put down his loyal hunting companion, Smokey. The other was when his father passed away.

Take solace in the fact Rusty is in a better place, with the pain, and probably feeling as frisky as a pup.

Hi Elaine,
I'm so glad that Rusty was able to say good-bye to you. It's so hard to lose a loved member of your family ... and our furry friends are often loved as family members. Hang in there.

I'm doing better today. My daughter and little granddaughters got here today to be with me while a friend helped me bury Rusty. My friend built him a little casket last night. My granddaughters wanted to spend the night with me so that I wouldn't be alone again tonight. They have smothered me with hugs and kisses and kept me busy. My six year old granddaughter wants me to let her dog live here so that I won't be alone. How sweet is that....She asked if we could have our bedtime prayer outside with him. As much as I miss him I know he is in a better place. He is no longer deaf and no longer suffering from cancer.
My Sploofus family helped me through a really rough time yesterday. I was hurting so bad and it was going to be awhile before anybody could leave work to come be with me. I know I must have sounded like a raving maniac ......but I do appreciate all the kind words and support more than you will ever know. I don't know what I would have done without you all. I don't want to ever hear anybody say that this wonderful island of friends has lost it's love. I am certainly not one of the well known members but I reached out for help and you all rallied around me. I will be forever grateful for that.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My daughter lost her golden to cancer last month. It broke my daughter and granddaughter's hearts. We get so attached to our pets and they become such an intregal part of our lives. Rusty is probably running with our Casey looking for birds in heaven.

Take care

Elaine, I'm so happy that you and Rusty had such a caring and profound love for each other, and that you were both so fortunate as to enjoy it for 15 years! You must be so terribly sad, but just know that you'll be together again one day. Until then, rejoice in the good times you had with each other, and celebrate the unconditional love. It's so devastating to lose a loved one, but so important to honor their memory with loving thoughts. Celebrate the love! He'll always be in your heart, and made the world a much better place in which to live.

God bless!
