BOOK CLUB-ANYONE INTERESTED?

Just thought I might throw this out there....if anyone is reading a good philosophical book we could coordinate and read them together. Anyone interested in that? Like I said, I'm reading Nietzsche right now, but I'd be willing to abandon him and get back to him later if somebody feels like reading something else, so we could discuss, praise, criticize, or whatever later. I understang being to busy....but I'm usually able to carve out a little time for it. Anybody? If not, no hurt feelings, lol.

Almost forgot, my girlfriend and I are kind of studying Gandhi right now, he's kind of a witty philosopher sometimes, if anyone is interested in him (or anyone else for that matter!).

Gandhi: In my opinion, the most important figure of the 20th Century (and I might go further back than that).

Read them both, but willing to revisit. At this time, Ghandi would be more to my liking.

Well, I'll try to talk Maddy1303 into joining this group, I'm just beginning to introduce him to her, she doesn't know anything about him and he's always been something of a role model for me. We just watched the movie and were heading into the autobiography, and after that were thinking about heading into a book called "The essential Gandhi", which focuses more on snippets from his philosophy and writings, it's really just an introduction for her. I haven't read much outside of those two books, I'd be interested in anything by him or about him, he's certainly one of the most significant philosophers of recent history in my mind. I've always been interested in the debate about whether his campaign of what I'll call "Civil Disobedience" ultimately was "effective" or not. I've always assumed it was but I've heard dissenting opinions about it lately. But don't feel limited to those two figures I'm reading Sun, if there's someone else more to your liking you haven't read we can think about that as well.

I have a theory that for all the technological advances, human moral development has been largely stagnant. Gandhi is a towering figure in moral philosophy (on a par with prophets and higher). The world needed Gandhi much more than Edison, IMO.

I agree Alan, and I know we are not alone.

"We are waiting not for a Godot, but for another — doubtless quite different — St . Benedict." -- Alisdair MacIntyre

If you were serious about Gandhi Sun, maddy and I could skip the autobiography and head into more of his philosophy first, the book is, "The Essential Gandhi: An anthology of his writings on his life, work, and ideas" edited by louis Fischer. Here's a link for more specific details, though you can get this book about anywhere.

I'm really interested in book/discussion format, have no prevailing preferences. Right now I'm reading a book that Sun got me for my Bday called Creativity/Anthropology. It is a collection of ethnographic writings on various cultures around the world.

Hey Danny, welcome to the group! Sounds like you, Sun, Maddy and I are the main people interested. If you have no preference maybe we can start with Gandhi and then move on to something of your choice after that? Sounds like we're all willing to read just about anything....someone needs to decide here! Glad you're on board btw, you always have something smart to say.

Just got mine from Amazon today, it seems this backwater area of the world doesn't believe in things like well-stocked bookstores.
