A FRIEND NEEDS YOUR HELP.

I received this from my cousin.....it is real and a very just cause. Please find it in your hearts to vote.

Hi - strange request but I could use your help for a friend. She is my best (and only) friend from high school (lori fogarty). She has a son that was born one week before Tori (yes, we were pregnant at the same time - how fun is that? - can't believe its been 8 ½ years). Anywho, when Richard was born he was born with Poland's syndrome and without one of his hands and is missing the pectoral muscle on the same side. Richard is the strongest, most amazing child and kids in his class when he was in kindergarten would tuck their arms into their sleeves with only their elbow hanging out so they could "be more like Richard" because he was "so cool".

Richard is now 8 ½ and Neiman Marcus solicited children for their ideas for the Christmas Trees in the downtown Dallas windows of Neiman's. Richards tree was chosen and he got the chance to work with the designers at Neimans to build his tree. His idea was to build a tree of all the gifts that Scottish Rite Hospital has given to children he has met over the years (wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs, crutches and the like). They were so impressed in working with him that Home and Garden Television (HGTV) recently did a story on the Neiman's trees and wanted to interview Richard for their story.

So now . Neimans chose 6 trees and they were unveiled last week in downtown Dallas. They have opened up voting to the public for our favorite tree and well . here I am shamelessly asking you to go and vote for Richard because I know how deeply winning this would be for him. He has struggled with so many things that other little boys unknowingly take for granted and I have watched he and his family struggle and grow stronger over the years. Just last month Richard was told by one of his teachers that if she were his mother she wouldn't have bought him tie shoes she would buy him Velcro shoes as she watched him struggle to tie his shoes on the playground. He came home in tears. He and Lori worked for literally years to learn to tie his shoes so he could wear tie shoes like his brothers and his friends. I can't imagine how I would have reacted . but not Lori . She just told him that "well, Richard, this is why god gave you to me - because he knew I wouldn't sell you short. You can wear tie shoes and tie them just like all the other boys - and I am raising you to be a man and a man you are already becoming."

I want him to win this one and I want his mom to have this win for him (and for her too). I want her to have the first place award so she can beat that crappy teacher up with it. I want it for Lori because of the challenges she has faced with the schools and our community. I have a hard time writing and talking about him because of how deeply I have experienced this struggle from the outside and how deeply I love my friend and cannot begin to imagine the strength she has had to muster for things I know I have unknowingly taken for granted as a mother.

Sorry for the diatribe but if you could help me by voting for Richards tree on the Neimans website (notice the prosthetic hands reaching to the sky he designed at the top .. . ) . I'll keep you posted on the results (please also forward the link to those who think may vote too - FYI you can vote once a day - bookmark it if you will) .

http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/service/poll.jhtml?pollCode=trees&icid=LocalStorePageTwo (vote the 4th tree on the page . the one that you see below) .

Having a disabled child myself who is now 45 years old I know the stuggles this mother goes through. And that is the same thing I always tell Robin God gave you to me because I will always do what is best for you. And I have had a few of those teachers who don't seem to know what or how to talk to children and so this mom talked to them and some of them not so nicely. So believe me I voted for that great young man and hope its going to help and will vote everyday. Charlotte

I voted this morning and his tree was at 83%. What a wonderful story of courage and love! The tree is brilliant and beautiful. It was a pleasure to vote for it.

Thank you for this opportunity Marsha.

I would like to propose something to you though Marsha, in the interest of fairness. It bothers me that "I want her to have the first place award so she can beat that crappy teacher up with it," is proposed by your friend. I understand the sentiment comes from protectiveness and defense of two wonderful people. But perhaps the sentiment of the teacher was compassion, as she watched Richard "struggle" to tie his shoes? Perhaps the teacher was just trying to make a helpful suggestion?

We weren't there and do not know this teacher. Obviously the teacher did not know of the practice sessions and success this demonstrated. As teachers, we know that misunderstandings can happen. Richard's mother's response was beautiful, but I don't think assuming the teacher was crappy is fair.

Just my 2 cents.

Sun, that bothered me also but like you said, I was not there and I do not personally know the teacher in question. I do know and have seen some teachers though that speak before they think. Maybe I should have deleted that part of the letter but then I did not feel it was my place to do that. I was more concerned with Richard getting the recognition that he so richly deserves. I have a picture of him standing before his tree that just makes your heart swell. If any one would like to see his picture, feel free to pm me your e-mail address and I will send it to you. He is darling.......and this is about him.

As Martina mentioned, view the drawings of the entries. The kids each tell about where they got the idea for their tree. One child said it came from "my brain." Too sweet...and quite logical!

If you google and found a larger picture of Richard's tree where you can really see the hands at the top. Very cool.

I'm trying to find the link again...

I agree, Barnierubble, that tree No. 3 is also good - but I think it is knowing the personal story behind tree No. 4 that makes it the choice for me. Plus we're helping a fellow Sploofus member who knows the boy.

Still tied at 48-48.

Marsha, could you find out if we can vote more than once a day? I've looked all over and I can't find a single rule anywhere on how many times you can vote. I can sure be putting in a lot more votes if it is OK.

Still 47 to 48%.

I Googled the topic last night and found some newspaper articles. I think the trees are to be auctioned Christmas Eve. But I couldn't find any rules about how many times one can vote per day. This is too close for us to slack off now - rally the troops!

The trees are definitely being auctioned Christmas Eve. Here's the link to a newspaper article:

I feel sad for the designers of the two trees that evidently have no votes, but this race between 3 and 4 is so close I don't dare give a vote to someone else.

Hey Marsha, could you e-mail or call your cousin to find out the status on this project? I've entered search words and scanned Web sites and I can't find a thing on it - other than they were to be sold Christmas Eve. I'm sure he won, but it would be nice to know how much was raised in the auction, too.
