After flicking between a few pages I thought my internet speed seemed reasonably good so decided to accept a Showdown Challenge.

Started to read the question ... it began 'The National.... and was on a subject I know a bit about ... hopes started to rise.... got to the answers and lo and behold all Americans I had not heard of except one so I paniced and clicked that and was, of course, wrong!

I accept the fact this site is highly american but I feel there must be a way of making things like QOTD and Showdowns a little fairer.

Perhaps Sploofus could have a 'Goldeuro' membership where these two questions are selected from a more European friendly selection. Provided the cost was not to high I think it could be a popular option.

Possibly some members who have not been bothered going Gold would pay up also.

And I am fully aware I do not lose any points by losing the challenge. I would just like to have a level playing field!

The above post was mine! I must have timed out while typing it.

While I am moaning... can anything be done to stop timing out lol

There was discussion a while ago about the timing issues with showdowns. It does seem unfair that a person should be punished for knowing the answer immediately but having an ISP server that was slow. One suggestion was that the questions continue till either party got it wrong. So the options were: 1 gets it right, 1 gets it wrong. Party with the right answer gets the points./ Both parties get it right, it goes to a second question, then a third, etc. till one party gets it wrong. the correct party gets the points./Neither party gets it right; it's a draw and neither party gets points. In showdowns, time shouldn't be an issue. It's the only way to level the playing field and have people feel more adventurous about trying it.

Perhaps editors need to be careful to write TQOTDs that are nationally neutral, as well?

linenlady that's a good suggestion....I was wondering why no one ever picked up on it earlier....I wouldn't mind international QOTD..

I would like to add my tuppence worth. I have been involved in 80 Showdowns both as challenger and challenged, it can be a little frustrating have a slow connection but this is in my opinion makes it all the more fun. I have to say as a Scotsman I have not really noticed any positive bias in the showdown questions towards the USA, American sports can be a little tricky but anyway if you are challenged then you do not lose any point you can only gain. If you challenge someone then you should be smart enough to check who is above you on the leader board, analyse their answering speed and make your decision based on this. I have only won 43% of Showdowns so maybe I'm not smart enough but in my humble opinion the showdowns should be left as they are 1)Because it is proven to work successfully and 2) I don't want a divide between us and our American cousins.

To be fair to Sploofus, I got a Showdown question on A U2 music album wrong today, (and that was a very unAmerican subject) that a European like me should know. I just hope maybe better luck next time - some "obscure" global/American topic that I didn't know that I knew. (If that makes sense!).

Yes I think I understood lol I would have got U2 question wrong as well cos I don't really like them too much and I am in Ireland.
Although I think they have had worldwide exposure so a question on them would be fairer than one on a tv show only aired in the States.
