WTHAI LEADERBOARDS & RETROSPECTIVE FOR NOVEMBER 2008

INTRODUCTION
--------------------------
Please join me in thanking the editors and giving them two thumbs up for providing us with such a wide variety of beautiful and thought-provoking WTHAI puzzles!

Many thanks also to everyone who has read and contributed to the WTHAI threads!

HOW I CALCULATED
---------------------------------
As in August and September, I created two separate leaderboards, one for the WhoTHAIs and one for the WhereTHAIs. I gathered data on winners directly from Sploofus and also kept track of alternate winners, i.e. players whose guesses weren't initially accepted by the system but who received credit later.

The leaderboards are very simple, in that I merely added up how many puzzles a particular player solved. So, for example, if the number (3) follows a player's name, that means they solved three WhereTHAIs or WhoTHAIs for November, according to my records.

No attempt was made to break ties. Please see August's leaderboard thread for an explanation as to why. You'll see there were many ties, and whenever they occurred, I arranged players in alphabetical order.

Although some players solved several puzzles, don't let that discourage you. We have new winners every month, and there's always something for everyone.

Please be aware that all data comes from my own records gathered from Sploofus and that it's always possible I've made an error. If so, please let me know.

Announcement of Winners to come shortly!

ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNERS
---------------------------------------------------
Overall, November was a very interesting month. For the WhoTHAIs, there were 67 puzzles, 42 winners, 1 disqualified winner (Wordpuzzle) and 1 puzzle (Khaleda Zia) with two winners. For the WhereTHAIs, we had 75 puzzles, 30 winners and 1 puzzle (Colletto Fava Italy) with two winners.

Please note that one of our regular WTHAI enthusiasts, Larrybus, graciously declined to accept any leaderboard credit for the Gerhard Schroder puzzle, and I'm respecting his request. He said he stopped the puzzle but did not solve it and therefore wanted the credit to go to Chender.

Kudos once again to Larry and Pete (Pyoung) for helping to make sure Chender received credit for that one. Kudos also to Kateatebate for lending a hand to Pjpjo on the Casa da Musica Portugal WTHAI. I know there have been many other players who have shown this kind of dedication to fair play and sportsmanship. Let's give them all a round of applause.

Now it's time for a drum roll ...

PHOTO RETROSPECTIVE
--------------------------------------------------------
Just like for August & September (and part of October), I created photo galleries of all the WTHAI puzzles for November so you could look back and revisit them. What are some of your favorites?

You'll notice that in the captions for each photo, I've posted links to the sources for each one. I did this to ensure that all non-Sploofus viewers know that I'm not the photographer and also to give you the opportunity to read about a person or place, if you missed it the first time around.

Here's the link to the photo album for the WhoTHAIs for November:

http://snipurl.com/album1

And here's the link to the photo album for the WhereTHAIs for November:

http://snipurl.com/album2

Those links take you to the full-sized images with titles and captions. You can also look at thumbnails of all puzzles.

Enjoy everyone!

STUMPERS
-------------------------------
I organized the text retrospectives a bit differently this month, hopefully for easier readability. Here are the stumpers listed again, only this time without the date and name of the solver, but with any known clues and number of incorrect guesses. Generally, if a clue isn't listed, then there was none, but that's not always the case. If you're aware of any clues not listed, you can let me know if you want, and I'll add them in a separate post. I know I'm stating the obvious, but these puzzles were solved after all 12 tiles had been revealed.

As you can see, we had 23 stumpers for November out of a total of 142 puzzles or around 16%. While it may seem like we're being stumped a lot, that seems like a pretty low percentage to me.

1. Wladyslaw Szpilman: 2 clues - "Musician;" "Central European Musician" and 557 incorrect guesses

2. Mary Lou Jepsen: "Technology Innovator" and 118 incorrect guesses

3. Gnome King Kyrie: "Dutch folklore" and 418 incorrect guesses

4. Roy Blount Jr: "He might not look familiar, but his voice might be familiar to some of you" and 396 incorrect guesses

5. Martti Ahtisaari: "European Diplomat" and 226 incorrect guesses

6. Alla Nazimova: "Actress" and an unknown number of incorrect guesses

7. Peter Wessel Zapffe: "Philosopher" and 334 incorrect guesses

8. Anais Mitchell: 2 clues - "Singer;" "Folksinger" and 308 incorrect guesses

9. Luther Duncan: 2 clues - "Education;" "Alabama" and over 300 incorrect guesses

10. Henry Van Dyke: "American author" and 400 incorrect guesses

11. Marquita Rivera: "Latina actress" and 742 incorrect guesses!

12. Elizabeth Clare Prophet: "I AM" and 376 incorrect guesses

I agree! I'm incredibly impressed by all your work here, Geri. It's wonderful. It adds a lot of depth and fun to the whole process. And it's SO fun to see the winners acknowledged, hear about the in's and out's, have the ability to re-visit the puzzles.

Cuz...I still have no clue how people do it! For one Who puzzle this week I looked up history of swimsuits, team outfits, Olympic winners, early 1900's athletes, men's team's, gymnastics winners, famous athletes early 1900's and flags of the world, thinking maybe they were wearing flag colors...I even looked up handlebar mustaches. I still wasn't any closer to finding the answer, except to confirm I was right about early 1900's. But someone got it. It's fun for me to work on how to become better and faster at narrowing down the options.

Thanks, for the great puzzles. Really frustrating! I mean...fun!

Thank you Geri!!! ......for the acknowledgement and the huge amount of work you do to keep us all up to date. We really appreciate it!

Thought I'd mention one of the "wheres" that slipped by last month possibly unnoticed - Haeinsa, South Korea. The picture wasn't the actual monastery that is on the wiki page but the Tripitaka Koreana woodblocks which are stored at the temple. They are National treasure No.52 and comprise 81,258 printing blocks. If you didn't see it at the time, it's amazing; you may like to take a look. There's more pictures in the wikimedia link as well. And what is also interesting is that I thought they were prayer boards so I was searching in Buddhist temples. Of course they weren't prayer boards but lucky for me both are in Buddhist temples so I stumbled across them.

Have fun searching this month everyone and if you want to know when it's time to give up and turn the computer off ...... not until your back aches and you are seeing double!

Godwit, I think you are talking about the Australian cricket player?
Don't feel bad. I probably spent about 3 hours total looking for him. Looked up every Olympic gold medal winner in a sport that I thought the uniform was a sleeveless top, including track and field, swimming, gymnastics, boxing and wresting. Then after the "Australian' clue came up, I looked up hall of fame members for football/soccer in Australia. Missed cricket entirely.

Just found this. What an excellent resource. Especially the flicker album - it's often easy to miss some of the WTHAIs due to (sadly) non-sploofus commitments, so great to be able to come back and look at everything with more time.

Thanks very much for compiling everything Geri.
