I want to rent out my beautiful uptown New Orleans home over Mardi Gras and take a vacation to Disneyworld but have no idea how to go about doing that. I have been told that houses here rent for gobs of money over M-G but how do you find someone that is reliable. I am even willing to throw in a car so people could get around town.

Anyone done this before or knows of something like a broker?

Unless you know of someone personally, it seems best to me to go to an agent. I'm sure that Mardi Gras renters have to be bonded, so that if there is damage, the funds become accessible. Look in your phone book for property managers, or ask at a real estate company; they might not handle week-long rentals, but they will know who will.

I have successfully rented people's homes for vacation. Most people who are looking for a vacation home to rent go to (vacation rentals by owner), that's where I rent from. For a small fee you can list your home there. Ask for a security deposit. Get your free up front by credit card.

OR.. ask anyone on sploofus first.. maybe one of us might be interested :D

And make sure you check with your insurance company before you rent. As obvious as this sounds, I know of one instance on a local lakefront rental that cost someone big bucks. Of course if you rent to people with nicknames like "Six-Pack", "Hurler", "Animal". etc. you can just tear down and re-build.

Does anyone do a home swap, to give you a "you squeeze mine and I'll squeeze yours" situation?

Home swap is interesting, but we want to stay at Disneyworld.

I just want to get enough money to swap a great New Orleans Mardi Gras house for a vacation.

The first time we went to New Orleans (during Christmas week) we stayed in a huge "apartment" in a B&B on Ursiline St. It slept 7, and had a full kitchen, etc. This was probably around 1983 or so. I remember we paid something like $40 a night for the 3 of us, and the owners said that for Mardi Gras the same rooms went for something like $700 a night. Then. So, I'm sure you can make your vacation money and then some.

Have a great time with the Mouse!
