One of my favorite features in Sploofus has always been the WP's. The challenge was always enjoyable regardless of my personal outcome. I don't know why but the last couple of weeks it has been an unpleasant chore to do these badly written, boring, exercises in nonsense. Now we really should forgive Barry for that monstrosity that he composed because he probably assumes that all of Sploofus is as sharp as Slicko and him but lately these things have caused me to consider dropping in, doing the QOTD, checking the forum and then doing something more fun like shoveling snow. Will the editors please put the fun back in these things? Well, at least tomorrow I can shovel snow again.

Dear Don
Different people like different puzzles; I try to compose three sorts. Mysteries, word play, and 'facts about a theme' but I know I love the lateral thinking puzzles other people do and don't like the lists (of which we have had our share in the last few days).
Horses for courses; I did not slag off the current 'foods of the world' though I found it deadly dull.
But that's OK; so long as we have a fair mix I do not think we can complain too much --even though I might!

Just so you know; the next two puzzles won't be word play...however the one after that....

Deadly dull, that's what I thought too but wasn't going to post it. I actually liked your last WP, Barry, just got mine in the wrong order. Don't really like lists but did very well on last nights. I like Wp's that either teach me something or are funny, occasionally someone combines the two, which is wonderful.

Don, I've got another music one coming up but not with over-lapping words. Most if not all of the songs should be known to everyone. I know they're not your favourite but give it a try anyway, hopefully I've succeeded in making it a tiny bit funny.

See, now I loved the food puzzle. I take them all - and I tend to like the factual puzzles as opposed to the punny puzzles. And, since I know nothing about songs or movies, I take those too, but am pleased when I finish in the top 50 with them.

Of course, I also tend to write the factual kind. It's the narrow-minded teacher in me, I guess.

But the overlapping category that I like the best - are the puzzles that cannot be Googled.

Music is fine, I usually enjoy them unless we get into Siberian folk songs or other "Subtrivia". Lately though the subjects are a little over the top. I don't expect my favorite subjects every day. Maybe it's the season. My wife claims that every Christmas holiday my "Mr Hyde" personality shows itself.

Alice, I like factual ones too & have nothing against food puzzles but the puzzles I got didn't have the names of the traditional dishes except for two. I know it would have made it harder but I'd have enjoyed it more even if I finished much lower.

Oh dear, Don, it's Christmas songs, you'll be bah humbugging me

I agree with Don. That food quiz was easy to do with google. What I found interesting was that some of the countries used, most of the population would explode if they ate a Big Mac. I'm going up to Englewood (in Chicago) next week and I'm going to write a Soul food puzzle and you'll all go nuts.

I don't know--I Googled and still found the foods WP fiendishly difficult. It's very difficult to Google words you've never heard of, and the websites I found didn't mention those obscure words. I especially dislike obscure words when they are filled with letters than appear nowhere else in the puzzle--then it becomes nothing but random letters to try (and lose points with). Not particularly fun, IMO.

I enjoyed the food puzzle as i love to cook - but my last one - I think it was thai food I really didn't like and it cost me because unlike my other four, it did not target specific ingredients of the cuisine - I don't remember it exactly but it was like "all kinds of ingredients" - I'm pretty sure that was badly paraphrased - but it blew my score as I tried to consider the different components used in the cuisine - it may not have been the thai one - I'm sure someone can refresh my memory.

The list puzzle contained too many obscure words for my taste

Good point; yes the thai food question just talked about interesting ingredients but did not mention any and I thought that was out of place -- though it did not cost me that many points. Just the principle n'all...
