My two weakest categories are "Music & Musicians" and (slightly less so) "Books & Authors." This month, I was doing pretty well, being in the top 100 occasionally.

But since December 13, I have had NINE questions in one of those two categories. Four of the last five, through today, have been in "Books & Authors." I've learned some neat factoids, and I've made a couple of lucky guesses, but my standing has, uh, plummeted. (I know, I could exclude a category.)

Is there any chance there's an algorithm to feed us questions in our historically less successful categories, as the month progresses? Are the categories really random? Is this the 428'th complaint on this topic?

Tony, It is what is called Luck of the Draw. I have been told this many times and I think winning lotteries or Power Ball is sometimes easier. I have made insinuations that were taken as accusations, so be careful. You may get Books & Authors
and Music & Musicians as a steady diet. I have been told that there is no control of your TQOTD from the Editorial staff and the guy that supposedly owns this site. I personally cannot accept it but I gave up complaining. This could be the greatest site on the internet with the greatest people. "IMHO" From what I see, the secrecy thing and personal conflicts have made it hard on all. Many of us are Platinum, simply to keep the site going, many are downgrading to Gold. Enjoy the questions while you can, a change has to be made.

I've been here for several years now and I do believe the TQOTD are randomly assigned. Every once in a while I, too, get a run of the same category. It's usually Books and Authors and it's usually when I'm waiting for a Vocabulary or Science question to go from .9 to the next level.

Yup, totally, maddeningly random! May not seem like it when I'm sitting on 10 sports and science questions praying for a vocab I haven't seen in 3 weeks, but I'm convinced it really is random. Vocab is just not part of my karma. I have to accept that. I WILL accept that. Someday. Maybe.

It really is random, I got Vocabulary TWO days in a row, which I was thrilled at -- but I was just grateful for the pure dumb luck of it.

The "secrecy" thing here about just about everything from editor identities to selection of daily question categories and the appropriateness of placement has been a source of unpleasant discourse for a very long time. I have pretty much "bashed" and offended both editors and players on an equal basis. I am with Papermanbill here-enjoy what you can here and hope that Justin shows up at some point and perhaps fixes and changes a few things-don't hold your breath though-Linda

Donna, One NASCAR fan to another. We know we need to change our tires regularly and sometimes we might need an overhaul. I think it's time for both on this deserted island.

With one glaring difference Tony, my TQOTDs are more difficult than anyones. Of that I am convinced.

I'm willing to accept that the questions are assigned randomly, however unlikely four out of the last five days in the same category is. Maybe there are more "Books & Authors" questions in the database.

Let's see: the categories for TQOTD seem to be Books & Authors, Music & Musicians, Vocabulary, Potpurri, Geography, World Events, and Physical Science (which somewhat strangely includes Biological Science). Have I forgotten any? It does seem there are more B & A's than any other.

B and A's are hard. Especially since they include so many children's books. And I'm a reader!

When I read a book, 9 times out of 10, I don't really dwell on the author. I don't read fiction, maybe that's why.

Tony, just reread your original post. In that you said you knew you could exclude a category. You cannot until and if Justin returns and fixes this broken feature. Folks who had an exemption in 1.0 had it carried into 2.0 when it became available and a MUST for all. If you joined after 2.0 was in place or rejoined like I did you do NOT have the option of exempting. Trust me I have whined about this and submitted multiple support tickets as editors at one point thought they could fix this but they cannot-Linda

On the other hand, I wish I could re-enable the category I exempted-movies and tv.

I find it interesting that members who think Googling on a Word Puzzle is cheating, but also think it is OK to exempt themselves from Question of the Day subjects that are out of their realm of expertise or interest.

I might Google a WP (but usually don't take the time) but I never did take advantage of the QOTD exemption because in my mind that is cheating.

So many times when the QOTD is music it turns out to be music from the 1980s through today and I am pretty clueless. So, I don't want to get any music questions from now on, OK?

I'm really a dunce about all sports, so no more sports questions for me, please.

When I read a book I tend to forget who the author was or what the book was about, so please remove Books and Authors from my QOTD list.

Science? Doesn't matter what kind of science to me, I never studied any science, so please eliminate Science questions for me. Thanks.

Geography wasn't my best subject in school either. And with the world changing so quickly, who can keep up with all of it. Please exempt me from geography questions until the world settles down a little.

Current events won't work for me either. Our daily newspaper is more like a weekly newspaper and focuses on local people doing good things, so I find it hard to keep up on current events. You might send a current events question along but only if you think I might know it.

I can't take potpourri because I'm allergic to the scent, so please leave that off my list, too.

if I've forgotten a topic, please check the question ahead of time and see if you think I'll know the answer. You can send it to me if you think I can.

I agree we need to know who those anonymous editors are because I'm spending too much time wondering if I'm being nice to an editor without knowing it. God forbid that I should do that! It would be like being nice to your parents or your teachers, your kids or your spouse. Or your boss. UGH.

Yep, I'd sure appreciate Justin fixing all my requests as soon as possible, hopefully yet this weekend. Thank you.

There's no hidden agenda and no secrets about the TQOTD. The computer randomly sends out the questions, from random categories. The only algorithm that sets limits for the computer are to make sure a player doesn't get the same question twice, and to make sure the editors don't receive the questions they wrote.

Currently these are the number of Q's in each category:

Books and Authors: 567 questions
Geography: 569 questions
Movies and Television: 570 questions
Music and Musicians: 569 questions
Physical Science: 555 questions
Sports Soup: 552 questions
Trivia Potpourri: 568 questions
Vocabulary: 591 questions
World Events: 552 questions

You said " the categories for TQOTD seem to be Books & Authors, Music & Musicians, Vocabulary, Potpurri, Geography, World Events, and Physical Science (which somewhat strangely includes Biological Science). Have I forgotten any?"

I guess you left out sports and tv and movies. Which I guess you haven't randomly received very often.

Just so you know, I am an editor. In fact, I'm the PRESIDENT of the editors. Yep, that's the ticket. In fact, I am everybody's favorite person on the island. As soon as I can locate Justin, I'm sure he'll implement all the suggestions I've submitted because I'm HIS favorite, too.

So be nice to me especially. No matter what you hear or read.

You will be forced to make no moral choice, Pat. Exemptions from any category were only an option if you chose to take the if you were a member in 1.0. The option nor the moral issue of opting out of any category does not exist for folks who joined when 2.0 was in place. I suppose it is like much else in my life l that when I had the exemption option thought it great. Now that I don't consider it an unfair advantage by some. Believe that is calledd being human. So carry on with the Googling debate-doesn't seem to help me much in the puzzles anyway-Linda

The point I was trying to make is that in order to present a moral dilemma, choice has to be present. Googling is still a choice but category exemption is not. Don't know if I would go so far as to say either of these present any major moral issue as this is, after all, a game and "out there" are real moral dilemmas. Linda

Like others, I have often been frustrated by the proliferation or absence of particular categories.

I will wager on Vocabulary questions exclusively, yet went five weeks without seeing one some time back.

This past week, I have had FIVE vocabulary questions in six days...!!! (Go figure....? )
Yup, wagered'n'won on the lot. (Yay!)

Cheers, Bev

Congratulations on all your Vocabulary questions Bev
Knew someone had to be hoarding them all....
BUT.....tell me please, how can you bet on them all????
Unless you'd been hoarding Wager Tokens as well????

Bigbird  (Level: 246.9 - Posts: 3336)

I'll tell on Bev. She used to be too lily-livered to wager at all, so she amassed a fortune of wager tokens. Pushed at her, and pushed at her. Finally had to figuratively hold her hand over the seas before she had the nerve to do it, and then she'd only bet these silly little amounts. But by now, the cure has taken, and she is wagering with the best of us.

Me, I never have more than one wager token. My one token will be used on the Science question I have waiting till I get up to the next level. Which should be today, but you never know. There are so many billions between myself and the next player up, that she doesn't seem catchable.

And now I think the Ambien is kicking in....cannot type straight. Off for a couple of drugged hours of wonderful sleep.....

Okay so let's see....there are roughly a grand total of 5093 questions in all the catergories for TQOTD. Okay now I am on level 63.2 which means I have seen and correctly answered 632 questions. I have been here for roughly 1380 days since first joining. So that means I have had the pleasure of seeing 1380 questions. And you are telling me that right now there are around 5093 questions in the database......*sigh*......I thought I was almost to the end, I thought that surely I have seen almost every stinking question written by now and that they would be restarting themselves and maybe, just maybe, the answer might have stuck in my head the first time I got a question wrong.....hey now don't laugh, it is possible....not likely but I see that I still have a HUGE mountain to climb ahead of me. It's depressing....very I am going to go back to playing World of Goo on the Wii, which just so happens to be my newest addiction, maybe it will stimulate my brain enough that I will feel like coming back and tackling the 7 TQOTD's that are waiting on me and the Showdown as well.....but not now....too sad....must go do something that at least I have a shot at saving the goo balls.......

Scenario in the TQOTD Command Center, yesterday:

"I see that Avdralle is complaining about so many Books & Authors questions."
"Right -- we haven't given him his favorite categories for a couple of weeks."
"Still, he must learn it isn't NICE to fret about his categories. It is even WORSE to COMPLAIN! He must learn that COMPLAINING is FUTILE!"
"Let's show him how much worse it could be. After all, he got a couple of the B & A's right. Give him the Geography question with 2.6% correct answer rate. That'll shut him up."

And so it was that today I joined the ranks of the 97.4% who got that Geography question wrong. I wanted another category besides B & A and M & M. I got it. I've learned what happens if you complain. (Whimper) No more complaints (about TQOTD categories, anyway).

Why Jan, it's you! Don't you recall writing in this very thread that YOU are an editor! So if any of you are upset with your QOTD, just contact Editor Jank. It's all her fault.

Identities if you have been here a bit are not really a secret at least for a few. I have nothing personal against editors nor players. My main issue is with things that are broken here that they cannot fix-so suppose my issue is with Justin. Some are simply an inconvenience like the inability to find past posts by player or topic. Others like the category exemption for some and not others making it not a level playing field just plain SUCK! Yup, said that because I no longer have it so no longer consider it "Great" as I once did-Linda (might add that I am not the brightest in any category and it is not unheard of for me to answer incorrectly in my favorite category Vocabulary-believe some of these words come from some other language Am very grateful to TSk for teaching me the word "Hubris" though as the word that comes first to my mind is a--hole when commenting on people or certain views. The use of that word in connection with anyone or anything here would surely result in a termination of my account-much prefer my "fit and quit" pattern) I am too old to get delight out of "bashing" anyone or anything but believe in order to survive in this caotic world and this game should all be playing by the same rules and respecting each others space-snipe at that!

I've had some questions that sounded like questions I had previously seen, but this might just be due to questions being similar to other questions. When the editors created new questions, they probably weren't able (or allowed) to check the TQOTD database to see if they were duplicating content that was already there. Just a theory!

Of course Alice is quite correct in her statements about me and my wagers (You blabbed!! ) She is awesome at wagering, I can only stand by, gasping in admiration.

However, one of the reasons I had so many wager tokens is coz there were never any Vocabulary questions to bet on!! Grrrrrrrr..!

Howeverrrrrrrrr........I will stage the occasional Showdown, which Alice WON'T do. (That does not mean I win the danged things, though)

Happy New Year, folks!

Sploofus Editor

Editors can only see and edit questions they personally created. We cannot see or edit questions written by other editors. Only one editor sees all questions, and once (s)he launches them, (s)he cannot go back and edit them. The only hope in fixing an erroneous questions is for the the editor who wrote it to still be available. Questions written before editors were on board, and there are hundreds of them, are completely beyond our reach.

Are they distributed randomly. They are as random as a random number generating program can make them. No one ever gets the same question twice, however some editors have unknowingly written questions very similar to those of other editors. Editors cannot be given questions they have written.

I've been keep track of my TQotD for the last five months. The totals
are listed below. August and November have an extra question because
I complained about bad questions and got do-overs. Geography isn’t
included because I’m one of the slackers that opted out of a category
back in v. 1. At the bottom is a 5-month total that suggests the
categories will balance out over time.

I too was interested in the toital number of questions in each category.
I was beginning to think there were fewer sports questions because I
just haven't been getting many.

And one last comment: You can get the same question more than once.
I've mentioned this before. I have now had four repeats of questions I
initially had as Showdown questions. So far it only has only been one
way, however; first a Showdown, later as a TQotD. And if any one is
wondering, I seem to get an inordinate number of geography questions in
my Showdowns. Karma.
