I don't know about y'all but have been waiting for the noms to come out to make dang sure Heath Ledger got a nod...he did. Tough part is he has to beat Philip Seymour Hoffman who is one of my favorites...but Ledger's portrayal of the Joker was absolutely over the top great and I will be shocked if he loses. What surprised me is Robert Downey Jr got nominated for Tropic Thunder! I love that! I was watching that and thought, the movie ain't great but he is really really good. It's be funny if he got nominated. But there is no way he is beating Ledger.

So let's hear your thoughts on the nominations!

The noms were pretty predictable and the winners probably will be too. Didn't see Benjamin Button and don't plan on it - 13 nominations - hmmmm. Slumdog Millionaire hasn't even made it here yet but can't wait to see it - even though I haven't seen it I really hope it wins. Definitely agree with you about Heath Ledger - when Jack Nicholson was the Joker (and he was fantastic) you still always knew it was him. I never once saw the real Heath Ledger under that make-up - he was phenomenal.

We should have an Oscar party! We can just claim to be wearing fancy gowns etc etc.! I havent seen any of the movies yet, but would like to!

Slumdog is great. You'll like it Slicko.
But anyone planning to watch it; if you think something violent is going to happen, close your eyes; the audience reaction will tell you if you are right!

Slicko you echo my thoughts EXACTLY!! That is precisely how I judge an actor's greatness. If the actor can make you actually forget who he really is (aka Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump) that is greatness. I felt the same way when I watched Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. I never saw him...I saw a raving psycho. He was phenomenal.

I saw Benjamin Button.. it's a good flick but I'm not sure worth the nom. I also saw Redemption Rd. It was great.. not enough noms for my liking.

Haven't seen Slumdog yet but will before Oscar night.

On a lark, my friends and I went to see Tropic Thunder.. way back in August - it was ok.. not as funny as I thought it would be but, we weren't expecting much anyway. When I saw that RDJ was nommed for his performance, my jaw dropped. I mean, I like him - always been a fan, and his performance WAS funny but, OMG - really??? Oscar worthy? To me, that's like giving a nod for a Will Ferrel character lol. Good for RDJ, I wish him the best.. I was just shocked.

David, you do realize that her present husband directed the movie, don't you? Poor David. Isn't there a lovely single actress for you to fixate upon? Oh well, I am sure if she met you she would drop this guy to be with you - you best get cracking with your screenplay then! I do want to see Revolutionary Road though - hear it's great!

I saw Benjamin Button. The first day of it was pretty good, but I nodded off during the second day and missed most of the afternoon. Probably would have been a really good 2 hour movie.

I thought Tropic Thunder was seriously over-rated too....BUT RDJ really was amazing. If you didn't know who it was and you missed the first part of the movie you would never know that's him under there. He was really great. An unexpected nomination but I actually thought he might get it when I saw the movie. I am simply shocked that Ben Stiller didn't get the nom for the Simple Jack character...when his eyes rained...I gotta got me all verklempt. I got schpilkis.

Was Ledger so good that when you closed your eyes, you were sure it was Cesar Romero?

Two fantastic documentaries were nominated in that category: Man on Wire and Encounters at the End of the World. I strongly recommend each--and both are available on DVD.

None of the big nominees particularly impressed me this year (except perhaps Milk), so it was nice to see these excellent, and entertaining, documentaries both nominated.
