THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED

I know there are quite a few people here who hold
a fondness for Buddy Holly.

This is the 50th anniversary of his death, and the
Des Moines Register website has a number of
interesting stories commemorating the event. The
newspaper's front page link to the stories is:

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage

If the page has been updated, you mighty try:

http://data.desmoinesregister.com/holly/index.php

The videos contain some pretty cool interviews,
and you also get some nice images of the Surf Ballroom.

No Buddy Holly = no popular music for the last 50 years.

At the risk of the wrath of Elvis fans, the reason that Buddy beats Elvis (imo) is because he wrote and played his own songs. That Elvis was (is? ) a better vocalist is incontrovertible: but Buddy was a great songwriter and a fair guitarist to boot. The fact that practically none of the music sounds dated today is a wonderful testament to his ability.

Must be something about the date - 50 years since Buddy's demise, 250 since Robert Burns'.

The memories of Buddy Holly, Big Bopper and Richie Valens will always be "with us".
Thanks for sharing these links.

Wow- I don't think I've ever read anything quite like the account of the Big Bopper's exhumation in 2007. I hadn't heard about this story when it happened. Fascinating.

Once again, try the "You know what happened in Early February" Tournament. You'll find plenty of references to the Day the Music Died.
