Dead of lung cancer at 76. I'm devastated.

I can't believe it, I wanted 20 more years. No more John Updike books. I feel just like I felt the day I knew there would be no more John Denver music. A brilliant voice has gone silent.

I feel the same way, Donna. Very sad.

In looking back at this event, it is sad to note that the best coverage and remembrance came from the BBC. Their coverage with stories and such was superb. Meanwhile, the coverage by the American press, Terry's show aside, was a pathetic little dribble. We are losing literary giants at a rapid rate...Updike, Vonnegut, Mailer, Buckley, Clarke, etc. The written word is slipping toward a grave condition.

CBS Sunday Morning did a lovely piece this morning. I'm pretty sure you can see it online or Comcast OnDemand.

John Updike was interviewed by filmmaker Bruce Schwartz regarding the composition of his story "A & P." This is a companion film to the director's dramatization of the story.

NPR interviewed a publisher last Fall, who said that books are going by the wayside, they have to admit it, and so they are not going to TRY to recover from the crash. They are going to just consider it a gong for books, and go on line like everyone else.
I was mortified.

Like I said before, my mom bought me a Kindle. I'm conflicted, cause I am a bibliophile. Haven't received it yet--guess they're popular--but looking forward with some trepidation. Do look forward to 9.99 bestsellers, but rarely read bestsellers! We'll see...

Not paying 9.99 for an electronic bestseller, and not even get a nice book to keep on the shelves. I don't see how that will sell for at least another generation. Sure hope nobody gives me one.

What is a Kindle? I'm out of it (again) it appears.

Hi Godwit! It's shaped like a notepad and you can automatically download books from amazon (in a minute or so). I read constantly, so it might be a good thing. My bookshelves are already packed. I do admire the feel, look, and smell of real books though, so like I said, we'll see..

I can see it as an appliance, but not a replacement for books. And not at 10 bucks a pop.
