LET'S THINK GOOD THOUGHTS FOR OUR AUSSIE FRIENDS ...

Many of you may have heard about the fires raging in southeastern Australia. According to a New York Times article, "it's the country's deadliest firestorm." Here's a link: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/09/world/asia/09australia.html?hp

We have many Australian players here at Sploofus, like Bushyfox, Joee, Eqitriv and Dyenamite.

I hope the fires will soon be extinguished, and my thoughts and prayers go out to all the families of those who have lost loved ones (including pets), homes, treasured trees and so on.

Yeah, and Bushyfox just got married in Alaska. She's on her way back to Oz with her new husband (but old friend) Jeremiah. Not to go off your original subject, but I just wanted to say that.

I had been wondering Geri how near any of these members were to the fires. Bobbsey (Diane) is also another Australian! Knew Bev was in Alaska, haven't asked Joee (Jo), Equitriv (Judy) I think anything as of yet. Haven't seen any post lately from Dynamite (Rick).

I hope they and their families are all well.

Just noticed this post.
I do not live in Victoria but know what these people are going through. When I lived in Tasmania our home was threatened by a deadly fire in 1967. The memories are etched in my mind. I feel so desperately sorry for these people.

Just saw a news update with film and the fire is just moving so insanely fast. I think they said 120 people have died so far, trapped and can't get out quickly enough. What a horrible disaster and loss of life.

I heard at least some of the fires were intentionally set? If that's the case, I hope they catch the blokes and there is swift punishment for this. You are all in my thoughts tonight.

You can sort the Player Directory by country, and as of now, we have 1,586 players from Australia. Wow!

Madmario, I hope you're OK! Annamcc also comes to mind. I took one of her quizzes and enjoyed it a lot.

Let us know you're OK, folks! We're thinking of you!

I'm getting live on-line accounts from friends in Mornington, Melbourne.
They've only had (relatively) small fires, successfully beaten back, to date.
But not far from them, just on the other side of Melbourne, it's horrific, so they're all watching out very carefully.
Their 2 a.m. temperature just a night back only went down to around 80F! Daytime is apparently around 115F!
If a flash fire starts, some have been overcome within minutes. Some escaping in cars were overtaken and killed by the (faster moving) fire.

Hello friends... long time, but not a regular poster, member here from Melbourne. The mood in Victoria tonight is one of shock and misery.. we are all devastated by the incredible infernos that have annihilated towns and cut short people's lives. There have been so many stories of loss and many amazing stories of survival. Everyone is watching closely for what will happen next. Our wonderful volunteer firefighters are so traumatised at finding friends and colleagues in burned out cars and houses that they have been relieved by specialist victim recovery teams. Our hospital burns units are full to the brim and their staff are working around the clock, many of whom have volunteered for extra shifts to ease the burden. Funds are flowing in for the victims and 6000 new blood donors registered today alone. Our Prime Minister and the Victorian Premier have been on the ground visiting the devastation and there has been talk of charging the morons who started some of the fires with murder. The weather here has been incredibly hot and the result of it has been everyone's worst nightmare. Thank you for everyone's concern and support and if you feel so inclined, please donate something to the many appeals that have been set up to support those in need.

Regards,

a very sad Lolly tonight.

Thank you for posting, Lolly. Just remember your Sploofus friends are here for you to help provide comfort during this crisis!

If you're interested, you can donate through the Australian Red Cross. I just did. You do NOT have to be Australian to make a contribution. Here's the link: https://www.redcross.org.au/Donations/onlineDonations.asp

Thank you all for thinking of those in Victoria. I emailed a friend whose town is in the burning section, but she said nothing had touched them. A lot of the destruction occurred in very small towns and communities of only three or four houses, set in the forested hills. Idyllic surroundings, but not when the bushfires cannot be contained. I am in Queensland, so far away from the fires and not north enough for the floods. Places around Townsville and Cairns were badly hit by the remnants of a cyclone, water everywhere there and more so on the inland rivers which are very shallow and spread out all over the countryside in flood. It was estimated that half of Queensland was under water.

I am collecting for Red Cross in our street next month and will be making a big effort to make a mammoth contribution to their funds.

They've just reported here that some of the fires were definitely arson and the Prime Minister has called it "mass murder."

My heart is heavy with anguish for all the folks who have lost loved ones and their homes.
I have been in tears, reading the news daily.

I spent 13 years as a firefighter, and till now, the worst fires in my memory for this region were the "Ash Wednesday" fires of 1983.
These current fires far exceed those in death toll and property loss.
The worst ones I fought in my region were in 1994: the memory is still very fresh.

I have dear friends in some of the devastated regions: Bendigo. Eaglehawk and Kinglake. I will call when I return to Oz, and can only pray that they are spared.
I have family in the Melbourne environs.......I pray to God that they are also OK.
Thinking of all our other Aussie Sploofusers: May God watch over you.

(Jeremiah and I leave AK tonight, heading to Phoenix and San Francisco to see folks before the 14-hour flight to Oz, returning Saturday, 14th February. Many mixed feelings on leaving AK . Thank you for all your kind wishes )

This is such a tragedy for your country, Bev. The slide show indicates some of the devastation of the countryside and the tragic losses to humans.

I'm so sorry.
