I think it's time for Sploofus to upgrade their server. On just about every quiz I take, after I submit an answer, it just sits there working. I have to click the go back button, then the go forward button, and re-submit answer. Sometimes I have to do this a couple times before it will proceed. I know this happens to a lot of people, because of their comments on the quizzes. It makes our times a LOT longer than it should, and let's face it, it is very frustrating.
I believe the reason for this happening is because the Sploofuser population has increased so dramatically recently (which is evident in the fact that it takes about two weeks to get a quiz published), and that's a GOOD thing. But now it's time for Sploofus grow with it's "Sploofan base".
I LOVE this site, I'm on here just about everyday, I'm a certified Sploofaddict. But I'm afraid that if this continues, Sploofus will lose a lot of the newer users, and I don't know about you, but I welcome all the new quiz takers and makers, as there have been some really good quizzes in recent months, from both newbies and veterans.
Thank you Sploofus, for providing a place to come, FOR FREE, and share our various categories of knowledge. But please upgrade, or I'm afraid this site will commit Sploofuscide.
Am I the only one who feels this way, or do you agree? Either way, post your opinion.

Since we know that Justin pays all the costs for this site himself, with only the help he gets from gold and platinum memberships, can I suggest that the best answer to that would be for free members who are frequent and regular players to upgrade their memberships? At less than $15 for six months (gold) it doesn't seem an exorbitant amount for something that people enjoy every day, and the golds and plats get extra facilities and perks, too.
Then maybe Justin'll have the money to upgrade the servers, which don't come free, unfortunately.

Maybe we should have a membership drive?
I'll start. I pledge to pay for a Gold Membership right now. No more relying on getting a "Who the Heck or Where the Heck Am I?" to gain Gold membership status.
COME ON PEOPLE, ISN'T IT TIME WE ALL DO OUR PART? HOW MUCH DO YOU APPRECIATE SPLOOFUS? WHO'S WITH ME? DON'T LEAVE ME HANGING IN THE WIND HERE!!!

Geesus, I can't believe I'm doing this. Aside from a select few (who are all in the top 50 I might add), I've been around here longer than most. Most of those are editors (ok, had to get a jab in) and we have been here through all of the quakes.
That being said kids, we have begged and pleaded and gotten on our hands and knees to ask Justin to fix the quakes. Back in the day, he used to be on here quite a bit and say "working on it". He would actually talk in the shout or send you a PM. For over a year now, he has been MIA, the editors have been left to flounder and struggle to maintain a friendly atmosphere here with little or no guidance from him. He knows I really believe in this site, but to be a leader, one must lead, not leave it up to others.
About 2 years ago, I was the one who suggested the "Platinum" membership (after a long 2 week crash) and it has worked fabulously, I'm only guessing because since Justin is not the one who is answering these complaints/suggestions, I have to guess.
I don't honestly know if increasing the revenue will help the situation, all I know is that if SOMEONE would say that increased bandwidth (ok, I heard that somewhere and have NO IDEA if that is actually what causes anything) or whatever would make the quakes stop, I would be the first to jump on the bandwagon. But the lack of response from him is making me (and a lot of other long time players) reconsider their membership. Some have left, some are considering it. It saddens me, but without a captain, the crew really doesn't have a focus.
My 3 cents.

I'm coming up on my second anniversary, but have only
paid attention to chat for a year and a half, and I don't
remember Justin ever being a major presence (though
he did more than come out of his cave to say hello).
Somehow I don't think having more paid members
who will demand more and better service is the answer.

I used to restart my computer just before doing TQOTD which shows up around 12:30 Central and then I trot off to bed. When the Splootimer started to drag, I thought it was my computer. Once I backed up and returned and then lost the entire question, so I just sit patiently until the timer finally runs out of sand. It usually gives my correct time in answering, but I've had to minimize that page and go elsewhere on Internet to kill time until I can see the results of the quiz.
At the library where I work, we have added more public-use computers and ports for staff, and our T-1 connection has become too slow. We were recently informed that there will be a connection change/upgrade that will solve the problem. Maybe that's what Sploofus needs?

Chick said it best. I was around as one of my 'selves" when Justin participated and the site was fun. Sorry, Berlym, if Justin needs paying members at least the Plats he needs to fix broken things All are sympathetic to his personal situation but believe he either needs to fix it or sell the site to someone who cares. If the thing is still even going when my membership expires, the very best I will do is Gold because with my big mouth often like to start a topic which nonpaying cannot do-Linda

Well, first of all, sorry to Chrondo for originally ignoring this thread, and responding to another thread on the same subject. I skipped this thread because I thought it was just somebody complaining about their cold weather!
Yeah, you're right that, in any business, there is a relationship between revenue and service. You can't provide good service if there's insufficient revenue to pay for it.
However, the reverse is also true. If I pay money, i.e., provide revenue, then I should expect service. Unfortunately, I see no sign of any sort of service (except, of course, by some very excellent and helpful VOLUNTEERS). I suppose I'm paying for Justin's hard work in the past, but it's apparent I'm not currently receiving the benefit of Justin's time or server upgrades. (Please, don't count that "Throw a pie, etc." nonsense.)
If there was a good indication that more revenue would immediately lead to bugs being fixed and servers being upgraded, then I would upgrade to platinum, and be vocal about others doing the same. But right now, from what I've seen in my year on Sploofus, more revenue wouldn't change a darn thing.

You pay your dues - whether gold or platinum - because you DO get some benefits that others don't. For one thing, you have the right to start a new post to complain about the service!
I've been on some other sites. You don't even know who to complain to! Here it's Justin, He has a name. He's a real person, with all the skills and faults of real people, like all of us. This is NOT a full-time job for him. He has to work another job to support himself and kids. I think you might classify this as an expensive hobby.
I'm not making excuses for him. I, too, wish Justin would just drop in more often - at least once a week - and say hi and I'm working on this. And then fix something. But one of the things I learned in my 30s is that I know that I don't know. We don't know everything about him, his circumstances, his health, etc.
The fact is, as a platinum, I get some benefits that I value. I love being able to write Word Puzzles. To me, being a Platinum is worth it for that alone. I'm so slow on the Word Rounds and Word Matches that I need all the tries an hour I can get in. As for the WTHAIs, I could guess until the cows come home and I would never get it right!
We also have editors who go through our work and catch silly mistakes that we make. I've been on other sites where the quizzes are evidently just slapped in and they look like heck. I appreciate the fact the editors make us look better than we sometimes are when we write puzzles.
Perhaps best of all is the fact that I can come to Salty Dog and chat with some really nice people. Sometimes the discussions are serious, and sometimes they are just fun. I am amazed at the people I "meet" here. Sploofus is a special place as far as I am concerned. I have not seen this kind of camraderie on any other site I've been on, including Facebook and My Space.
You've all had your say and I'm not going to disagree - or agree - with any of it. All I'm asking is that you hang on for a couple weeks and see what happens. My guess is that even though Justin doesn't log in and chat like he used to, I suspect he might read what's being said.

so...I'm hearing that a guy founded the site, and that guy is absent.
Meanwhile, paying members write all the quizzes and puzzles.
Volunteer editors answer all the support tickets.
Volunteer editors edit and check all the quizzes.
Members chat and visit and support each other.
So far....astounding. It could easily be Lord of the Flies around here but it actually runs quite well.
So....they need a volunteer team of tech people, it sounds. To fix the bugs. That "to do list" that isn't getting done.
Cuz....otherwise, the site seems near perfect.
It's just that increasingly there are complaints, legitimate, about site performance.

I've been on the site for going on 4 years, and have been a Platinum and Gold member. Right now I'm a gold member because I only play the WR/WM's, and I work many hours a week, so it doesn't benefit me to pay up for more that I won't use. That being said, the lag times, quakes, and loss of times on questions that costs some many points is getting to the point where many are losing patience. For example, I wanted to post a bug on the TQOTD, about a time out issue that cost me 1/4 of my points. When I looked at the fixed vs. open tickets, there are over 90 open tickets, versus less than 10 that have been fixed or resolved. The last resolution appears to have been about three months ago. When I first joined, there were maybe 1500 members. I'm sure that Justin didn't expect it to grow like it has. Unfortunately, growing pains mean building a bigger house, and that house is a bigger and better server. There may be personal issues that are taking him away from here, and I respect that. However, the worse the quakes get and people lose points and patience, the more the memberships will fall off come renewal time. Mine renews in about three months, and I'm not sure at this point that paying is worth it honestly. I hope that we'll see some things get put in motion soon.

justin, can you give me the address as to where i can send a money order to pay for a platinum membership. you gave me an address, but i didnt do anything about it, sorry, and lost the address. i've been on the site since 2004, and feel really guilty now for being a freebie so long, but i dont have a credit card. thanks justin.
