JOHN BOLTON AT CPAC - DISGUSTING!

Former UN Ambassador John Bolton believes the security of the United States is at dire risk under the Obama administration. And before a gathering of conservatives in Washington on Thursday morning, he suggested, as something of a joke, that President Barack Obama might learn a needed lesson if Chicago were destroyed by a nuclear bomb.

Appearing at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), the nation's largest annual conference of conservative activists, Bolton, one of the hardest hardliners of the George W. Bush administration, spoke at length about Obama's naiveté and how various nations – Russia, North Korea, Iran – will be exploiting the new president. The most dramatic moment of his speech may have been when he cracked a joke about the nuking of Obama's hometown.

"The fact is on foreign policy I don't think President Obama thinks it's a priority," said Bolton. "He said during the campaign he thought Iran was a tiny threat. Tiny, tiny depending on how many nuclear weapons they are ultimately able to deliver on target. Its, uh, its tiny compared to the Soviet Union, but is the loss of one American city" – here Bolton shrugged his shoulders impishly – "pick one at random – Chicago – is that a tiny threat?"

Bolton wasn't the only one who thought this was funny. The room erupted in laughter and applause. Was this conservative catharsis, with rightwingers delightfully imagining the destruction of a city that represents Obama? Or perhaps they were venting vengeance with their laughter.

I couldn't find a direct link to the video but you can find it on various news sites. To see Bolton talking and hearing him and the ensuing laughter will sicken you - this is not funny. And this group doesn't like Bush anymore than Obama really.

Didn't see that one, Karen, but did notice thart some guy who blew up something or was plotting some way to destroy something or some people and is now in a SC prison will be brought to TRIAl soon. Also know that any calls about Gitmo guys are being redirected to the Justice Department. We are back to treating all things "terrorist as a legal issue like Clinton did. Have no idea if that is good or bad just looking at what happened directly after Clinton-scares me more than a tad- Linda

Bolton was over the top, Knerd, but unfortunately on target.

Given he and his former administration's foreign policy record, an alternative is surely in order. But insted, the usual "sky is falling" scare tactics.

I read somewhere that it was so looney tunes there that even Sarah Palin wouldn't attend.

Sorry it took something so very rude to perhaps get anyone's attention. Never believed in making rude comments about Bush to make a point but guess it made people interested. Just believe whether you agree or not he is making terrorism a law enforcement issue and no longer an issue of War-the whole move from inquiries from the Department of Defense to Justice. That is EXACTLY how bill Clinton handled terrorism and the result was obvious. Will it happen again? We can all hope not- Linda

Actually not, Ken, and there really haven't been any changes yet.

Much was done and accomplished to limit the proliferation of nuclear weapons, a key element to maintaining world peace virtually ignored 1993-2001. Still a way to go.

And lots of headway in the War on Terror as well, also ignored in the latter stages of the previous admin.

Iraq was badly managed for several years but is finally on the way to a positive outcome.

The Left's Achilles heel is foreign policy; the Right's, domestic affairs (e.g., Katrina). Amazing to me how much each of them talks and talks about stuff they screw up so often.

I beg to differ with you, Andy. Know troops will remain in Iraq for pretty much as long as the commanders there think them necessary but somehow they have been given a different name than combat and the number will surely change Still have not heard a definitive answer to the troop increase in Afghanistan-sure war won't be used though. That the Drone strikes in Pakistan continue that folks believe Bush should have been drawn and quartered for is also true. The subtle difference is the shift like is illustrated by charges being brought against the Carolina guy which means he will be tried in court. Terrorism is now law enforcement issue and is handled by the Justice Department ala Clinton not the Defense Department ala Bush- Take your pick if one worked better or if it is significant or not-Linda

Linda, there is no change in Iraq, save perhaps a deadline to leave which is under review. More troops does not mean a change in Afghanistan. Drones strikes do continue.

But no sooner had I posted than I read about a change vis-a-vis Israel. Hillary and Co are now criticizing Israel over the Gaza incursion and that is related to the $900 million they are ready to squander there.

Know some are counting the number of times I post to a thread. This one, however, was not started by me but find it interesting. Just so none of you miss it-Rush Limbaugh will be the featured speaker tomorrow at that convention. It most likely will not be covered by MSNBC but Fox is carrying it at 5 pm.-finally I will get to see and hear the man that many think I parrot- Linda

I see dumb people. Walking around like regular people. They don't see each other. They only see what they want to see. They don't know they're dumb.

And lots of "slick' folks in prominent positions depending on their being "DUMB" people listening to them when they say things that make no sense-mathematically, historically, etc. etc. Linda

Well, Linda, I almost can't tolerate Limbaugh any more. And it's been that way for about 15 years. After his initial rise based on an almost unique-in-the-media, early-on understanding of the Clintons he would occasionally offer an insight. I have no idea if he even comes up with an occasional insight any more. What little tidbits seep thru the media to me nowadays continue to confirm my reading of Limbaugh as a dogmatic Neanderthal conservative and a Republican shill.

I am one of those dreadful moderates he used to complain about, and I prefer to listen to original thinkers.

Think you've said much the same thing before, Andy. you certainly have every right to your opinion and the right to say it as many times as you chose. However, what I think or believe is not based on your opinion of it- Linda
