WTHAI LINKS & TALK - MARCH & APRIL 2009

Hi everyone!
Well, March is certainly coming in like a lion where I live -- a blizzard is supposedly on its way. Anyway ...

If you're new, this thread is for general talk about the WTHAIs and for posting links whenever the official one is broken or doesn't match what we've seen in the game. Anyone can post links!

Please don't feel like you have to be a WTHAI winner to post here. It's for anyone who has an interest in the puzzles and/or an interest in the people and places that emerge from them.

If you want to ask for help with solving strategy, this is the place! Many players are happy to share how they went about solving a puzzle.

We try to keep the ambience upbeat and festive here, and everyone is welcome!

Here's the link to the thread for January and February, which gives you links to previous threads:
http://www.sploofus.com/bbs_detail.sp?post=128324&cID=6

Happy WTHAI hunting!

Extra congratulations should go out to Spicyhedgehog for her guess of "Millennium Centre Cardiff" for the "Wales Millennium Centre". She has been given credit for her guess. It was not on our list of correct responses, but should have been!

Hi!
For anyone interested, I did get all the links updated for February. You can find those in the other thread.

OK, here are some WhoTHAI links:

1. CHIAKI KURIYAMA. There's no photo for her on the Wikipedia page, so click here to see what the puzzle looked like:
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/697/02chiakikuriyama.jpg

2. VLADIMIR HOROWITZ. Click here to see what the puzzle looked like: http://www.cs.princeton.edu/~san/horowitz.jpg

3. HERB DEAN. This puzzle is still up at the moment. The link to Wikipedia is good, but I always like to post info about the stumpers. There were two clues -- "Athlete" and "Well-known in the mixed martial arts world." 468 incorrect guesses.

For the WhereTHAIs, in general, the links are good and match the puzzles. Sometimes, though, there are multiple photos on a page. When I have time, I try to post which photo matches the puzzle, but I don't always have time. So, just ask if you missed a puzzle and are curious what it looked it like.

OK, that's it for now! Congratulations to all the recent winners!

Hi everyone!
Time for some links!

1. HERB DEAN. This was a stumper. There were two clues, "Athlete" and "Well-known in the mixed martial arts world." 468 incorrect guesses. The Wiki photo of him matches the puzzle.

2. PIERRE CHODERLOS DE LACLOS. The image at Wikipedia is good, but here's a link to a clearer one, courtesy of Larry:
http://www.scholarsresource.com/images/thumbnails/192/x/xmn228252.jpg

Thanks, Larry!

3. PUFFY AMIYUMI. Click here to see what the puzzle looked like: http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/285/11puffyamiyumi.jpg

4. KYRA SEDGWICK. There's no photo of her on the Wiki page, so click here to see what the puzzle was based on:
http://upload.moldova.org/movie/actors/k/kyra_sedgwick/thumbnails/tn2_kyra_sedgwick_4.jpg

OK, that's it for now. I'll try to get to some WhereTHAI links tomorrow.

Congratulations to all the recent winners!

Joee is also still on fire, winning four of the last 10 WhereTHAIs! Congratulations!

Thanks Geri!!

Most of you would have missed this because it was in the middle of the night for you but evening in Aus. My wrong guess (which wasn't really a guess) appeared after the correct answer at the top of the list. The screen did a lot of bouncing about so I think they were fighting for first place in cyberspace. Annabellesings guessed "Joee's house" and I replied "no it's not" but the correct answer "Onofrios Fountain" came up between "Joee's house" and "no it's not". So it actually read "Onofrios Fountain" with my reply "no it's not". I'd just like to point out that I totally agree that it IS Onofrio's Fountain.

I'll have to admit, Jo, I did a doubletake on that one at first, but then realized you were saying "No it's not" in response to "Joee's House" as it was not your house.

Hi everyone!
Well, I haven't posted any links in over 10 days! Wow! Thanks for keeping this ship afloat while I was off having adventures in far-off and far-out places. I think I might have been stuck in an episode of "Quantum Leap." Anyway ... if you missed any puzzles, here are some links for the WhoTHAIs:

1. AISHA TYLER. This one was solved way back on March 7. Click here to see what the puzzle was based on: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1022138112/nm0878768

2. CHARLIE MCCARTHY. This one was solved on March 8. I mention it because the puzzle showed not only Charlie McCarthy but Edgar Bergen as well. Here's the original link to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_McCarthy

Also notable is the fact that we had a WhoTHAI on Monday featuring Bergen's daughter, Candice.

3. BRIAN ENO. This was a stumper from March 9. It was solved before a clue was provided. 163 incorrect guesses.

4. WAVY GRAVY. This one was also from March 9. Click here to see what the puzzle was based on:
http://www.woodstockpreservation.org/PastPresent/WavyGravy68th1.jpg

5. COLUMBO. This was from March 11. Here's the original link to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Falk The photo used for the puzzle was the one on that page captioned "Falk as the fumbling but dedicated detective in Columbo."

6. YUL BRYNNER. This was from March 11, and here's the original link to Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yul_Brenner The photo used for the puzzle was the one captioned "from the trailer for The Ten Commandments (1956). (Rameses II)."

7. MARTHA HALL FINDLAY. This was a stumper from March 12. I have no record of a clue being provided, and there were 230 incorrect guesses.

8. OKSANA AKINSHINA. This was a stumper from March 13. Again, I don't think a clue was provided. There were 237 incorrect guesses.

9. ABBIE HOFFMAN. This was from March 14. Click here to see what the puzzle was based on:
http://www.fabulousfaces.com/lib/upload/lrh2215.jpg

Thanks to Larry for tracking down the link!

10. RICHARD KUKLINSKI. This was also from March 14. Click here to see what the puzzle was based on:
http://www.cbc.ca/documentarychannel/images/visuals/the_iceman.jpg

11. PAUL GASCOIGNE. This was from March 15. Click here to see what the puzzle was based on:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/devon/content/images/2008/01/03/paul_gascoigne_465x328.jpg

OK, that's it for the WhoTHAIs! I'm not sure I'll have a chance to post links for the WhereTHAIs, so I'll say congratulations to all the winners!

The one that got away...
On Salty Dog there's one complaint about missing Stephen Fry.
Since he is the only celebrity who is likely to appear that I've actually met --albeit in traumatic circumstances when losing a match of University Challenge (UK TV equivalent of college bowl) I think I would have got him were I not in transit all day from Houston to NY.

Hi!
Happy April everyone!

Well, sorry I've been MIA from this thread for awhile. Just busy, busy, busy. Anyway, I know I missed acknowledging some double and triple wins, so I'll just say please join me in congratulating all of the winners for March!

If you have any questions on any of the March puzzles, please feel free to ask, as I do have all the info I gathered and can still post any links anyone would like to see.

And remember, this thread is for anyone with an interest in WTHAIs, and anyone can post links and commentary!

OK, good luck to us all! Happy WTHAI hunting!

My apologies to all WTHAI players who were trying to solve the "Ben Crenshaw" Who. Although the golfer in the photo is identified as Ben Crenshaw, he is actually Dan Forsman, according to Wikipedia. Please see this page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ben_Crenshaw&oldid=279738111

Please scroll to the bottom, where you will see the correction regarding the image. I did not become aware of the misidentification and the webpage revision until after the puzzle had already gone live, and unfortunately, we do not yet
have the ability to correct answers or links after a puzzle has gone live.

All guesses for the puzzle have been reviewed, and no one guessed Dan Forsman. Congratulations to Paralady!

Re faces I should have identified...
A few days ago I claimed that Stephen Fry would be the only person on the list I'd met. Wrong!
Another failure on my part (I saw the first couple of bits of Sharansky but did not get him).
My mother is co-chair of the 35's a soviet Jewry pressure group to get Jews out of russia pre 1989, when exit visas were few and far between.
When Sharansky left Russia he came to our house for a party en route to Israel.
He was rather thinner then!

Thanks for the explanation, Sploofunky. I thought I had lost my marbles. Crenshaw is a fellow U of Texas grad, and I'm very familiar with his face. After all the tiles were revealed, I thought it still didn't look like him, although I haven't seen a current photo of him lately. Glad to know that all marbles are firmly in place.

Barry,
Your personal story about Sharansky is fascinating! Thank you for sharing that!

Did you notice who appeared in the WTHAI in the early morning hours? Joseph Priestley! How ironic that you would do a mystery WP on him just prior to the contest, and here he shows up again! Anyway, pretty cool.

Other WTHAI aficionados -- From time to time, please share your stories about the WTHAIs you solve (or don't solve). I know I'd enjoy hearing them, and I'm sure other readers will as well.

And .... one of these days, I'll try to get links posted. If any of you would like to post links when the photo on the Wiki page doesn't match the puzzle, you're certainly welcome to! One for all, all for one in WTHAI land!

Ritajo needs the points on Khalil Gibran.

After guessing it I noticed that tresgatos had spotted the mis-spelling by ritajo and given her the hint but I stepped in all unawares.

Thanks for your concern and generosity, Barry. You solved the puzzle on your own. We don't take away anyone's points. All we do is occasionally award points or a Gold membership to players who entered correct answers that weren't accepted by the system for one reason or another.

In this case, Ritajo did not return to the WTHAI game to enter a guess that was spelled correctly. Hence, they are not eligible for a win. Perhaps they will have better luck in the future.

Thank you again for your good sportsmanship and interest in fair play, Barry. We appreciate it.

Jeez are you guys screwing with me?

What's with setting up people I know on the WTHAI and my failing to guess them?

Jackie Tabick was my rabbi when I was confirmed in 1976....did I identify her...what do you think?

How many famous people can you find that i know personally biut cant identify? I'm not amused!

(Well maybe I am just a little)
