HERE IT IS...THE $64,000 QUESTION

Knowing the basic issues (plagiarism and such), if you were one of the editors, How would handle the job of editor to make sploofus the best, most enjoyable trivia site online???

Well, I have to tease you on this one, Steve. I guess one of the first things I'd do is proof read your message and send it back to you for correction. You left out the word "you" after "would" which would help the statement make more sense.
Most writing benefits from an extra pair of eyes.
I guess the job of an Editor is to help writers say clearly what they need to say so that the readers clearly understand what they're reading.

Did you capitalize the "How" as a test as well?

Seriously, editors need to do their job and do it well while keeping in mind that 99.9% of the quizzes they get will be well-intended submissions not meant to break or get around any of the rules, especially the plagiarism rule. That said, editors need to be vigilant for plagiarism and also for the other guidelines, especially the five answer rule, the need for good spelling, capitalization, etc. When a rejection needs to be made, it needs to have helpful commentary attached so the author can fix what's wrong and promptly get their quiz approved.

I've only done one quiz since the new system went into affect, and it was promptly approved without comments.

The flip side of the question is what we as authors can do to make the editors' jobs easier. Obviously, first and foremost, don't plagiarize! But also, before submitting, proof-read the quizzes for spelling, etc., and correct observance of the guidelines. I'm sure the editors get frustrated when they have to spend extra time on a quiz which has numerous spelling, capitalization or other problems, and especially if the author appears to have gratuitously ignored the guidelines.

"what silly error did I make in my previous post?"

Um...you used American spelling instead of English (e.g. capitalize instead of capitalise)? (Just kidding!)

Seriously, the differences between American and British methods of spelling creates real problems in quizzes, particularly if they are fill-in-the-blank questions.

Problems also arise when terminology and names vary between countries.

For example, the book "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" is the original title created by the author and the book is known by this title almost everywhere, except in American where the publishers decided to change it to "Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone". I submitted a quiz to another website where I have received rude notes from players about this discrepancy and it is something you need to be aware of on an international quiz site.

The silly thing here was that this discrepancy did not affect the player's ability to select the correct answer because "Harry Potter and the Philosoopher's Stone" was actually the wrong answer to the question!

Linenlady caught the effect mistake Will. I also noticed there should be no comma before the word and. Ninety-nine point nine percent should have been written. Just thought I'd add my observations. LOL

Aquamar,

I believe that you're correct on both counts, although in this day and age, I also believe that both are stylistically acceptable. At least, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

The affect/effect mistake is not excusable, stylistically or otherwise. I still can't believe I actually typed that, but there it is...
