MARCH IS NATIONAL WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

Suzanna Madora Salter was the first woman mayor. It was 1887 in Argonia, Kansas.

Blanche Scott was the first woman to fly an airplane. The year was 1910.

You can log on to the National Women's History Month Web site and learn some more. Hope you'll share some of the others here.

You Pennsylvanians are so dynamic!

Margaret Chase Smith of Maine was the longest serving woman Senator (4 terms). Maine is served by two woman Senators today as are Washington and California.

Five years ago this month I was walking in Spain with Michelle who soon became a good trail friend. We were hiking on Women's Lib day here in France, and she told me that it wasn't until the early 60s that a married woman could go to work in France without the consent of her husband. A strong advocate of women's liberation (Girl Power!), I was aghast.

Unfortunately Michelle who was invariably funny while hiking had a rather sad home life and took her own life about two years later after we had hiked to the top of the highest peak here the previous summer. I hope to hike again to the summit of the Pic de Canigou once more in memory of Michelle. I so wish she was still with us.

Anyone who's ever driven in a rain or snow storm can attest to the dire importance of windshield wipers. What a lot of people don't know is that windshield wipers were invented by a woman. Inventor Mary Anderson received a patent for her car-window cleaning device in 1903.

Gosh, there are so many Hillary Clinton fans on this site that I left the obvious post for one of them: Hillary Rodham Clinton is the only former first lady to be elected to the U.S. Senate.

Nancy Pelosi is the first female speaker of the House.

Hattie McDaniel in 1939 was the first African-American to win an Academy Award (she won for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mammy in the film, Gone with the Wind). She was also the first black woman to sing on American radio.

In 1969, Shirley Chisholm, of New York, became the first African-American woman in Congress. Her motto was, "Unbought and unbossed." She served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 14 years.

In 1933, Frances Perkins became the first woman be in a president's cabinet. She was FDR's secretary of labor.

In honor of the occasion, I am releasing all of mine (except one) back into the wild. There are some great pics of Hillary in my Photo Gallery. Is she a babe or what? Now let's all go out there and treat women like they are God's greatest gift.

Actually you are wrong; there are plenty of Hillary fans here.

Please don't claim to speak for all of us.
