I am writing out of frustration. The only reason I joined Sploofus was for the Wordpuzzles. I have seen the membership decline and now all of the puzzles are about the few remaining "regular" players which is ABSOLUTELY boring for the rest of us. Sorry, but it's true. I can see why Justin is not paying attention, as at any given moment there are never more than 70 players online. That's nothing. I guess we've paid a membership that is going down in flames. Anyway, I know I am not a puzzle or a quiz author, but they are the reason I joined Sploofus. I would genuinely enjoy some original puzzles about something not about the author's personal life. Thank you. And, I admire the work it takes to author the puzzles not about yourselves.

I agree that any time you don't mix up the WP's, they get repetitive and unfun. I had a wise editor once listen to me gripe on that and relaxed on making repetitive word puzzles. Hopefully the right ear is listening this time too.

I suppose you are not alone in your thinking.
Other players who are not platinum members and can't contribute puzzles may be having misgivings too.

The "10 Things About " is just an idea to encourage more players to be contributors, and at least in my case, offering me an opportunity to learn more about other Sploofus members than what their profiles tend to reveal. I've found them to be fun and worth the time.

Sploofus won't prosper if we lose our sense of identity- and part of that is comradeship and a sense of family. After all, this is an island. We need to swim or sink together. Salty Dog brings out the best and "less than best" in us at times , but most players really have learned to pull for each other- and generally- agree to disagree. Sploofus offers a lot more than word puzzles- so explore the other games and enjoy them too.

In a year,- a gold/platinum player can play about 730 word puzzles- so there will be some ________ [fill in your own blank] along the way.
The current predominant theme and the May "special contest" is designed to motivate players to be authors, or at least, encourage some free members to consider upgrading to allow more chances to play.

Anyway- fair warning- my "Ten Things About "me will launch next Friday.
I hope my phrases aren't too boring.

Hi, I understand your frustration. We are trying something new with the word puzzles which was discussed in a few threads a couple weeks ago. This is our first set themed word puzzles in which we invited players to submit entries based on a set of 10 prompts.

We meant to space them out a bit more than they have been, but we received a very healthy response to our invitation. So far, most of the feedback we have been getting has been positive. But lest you despair, the "10 Things About Me" set of word puzzles will be finished on April 1. We will probably do another set of themed puzzles in the future (different topic, of course), but I promise we will spread them further apart.

On April 1, we begin the 2nd word puzzle contest and they are on a wide variety of topics. The ones I have seen so far look like a lot of fun. We'd love to have you join in and vote on all the word puzzles whose titles begin with "C:". Or even better, we'd love to have a word puzzle written by you. (See this thread for complete details - )

Anyway, in terms of online members, 70 is fairly normal for these days. Peak time is usually early in the morning when we have double or triple that. But even an average of 70 is up from a year or so ago when most of the time it was around 50. And, of course, it's not just the same 70 players on all the time. Most players are on for much less than thirty minutes, so we're actually seeing hundreds of players checking in per hour. No joke, we actually can track that sort of thing.

So, rest assured we are here and listening and keeping our noses to the grindstone and always dreaming of new and different stuff to do...

Being fairly new around here, you must excuse my ignorance. Is there any reason why only platignum members are allowed to compile WP's ? How about introducing some other qualification to open it up for selected (if not all) gold members too? Maybe i'm missing the blindingly obvious.

Christina, I don't agree with you.

I don't think the the 10-things-about WPs are boring. I might be that the older hands around here have a slight advantage since they may know the authors more than we newcomers do, but they have earned their place here.

Only 70 at one time? I'm five hours ahead of you, usually six and that doesn't ring right with me. I see 125, even 200. And looking at the size of the player directory, membership continues to grow.

You are on target Christina. Although I quit doing WordPuzzles long before the snobbery. They became boring, filled with personal data and nothing to do the the average player. Even worse is the back patting that goes on in the Salty Dog. Can we move the Mutual Admiration Society compliments to another Chat Forum? Everything here seam to come around to the elite at Sploofus. We used to have 'Polls' asking about things, maybe instead of merely going on the Platinum Members whims, we should be considering the wants and needs of the general Sploofus Populous. They didn't seem to learn anything from those boring Community Quizzes or the Editors handing each other awards. Despite those that think Sploofus is just about them, it's still a Great Island to visit.

As a committed WP addict I think the 10 Things idea was incredible. I am stunned by the variety. Even though the clues are the same the likes, dislikes, and places we want to visit (to name a few) are very different every puzzle. Some are touching and some are downright hilarious. And for those who don't like "Googleable" puzzles there is no way you can google anything in these puzzles.
It is nice to hear that the next "theme" month will be spaced out a little more, but major kudos to whoever is behind the scenes and came up with the idea.
And as for the numbers thing (because I have a habit of hanging around Shout a fair amount) I am chatting with lots of new folks and seeing more people playing WRs and WMs than ever before.

Right, Gary.

What other puzzle would include "Kamchatka" or some Sploofuser blowing his $million on even more CDs?

I do usually go to the puzzle player's profile just to get a hint at what might be in the puzzle. I thought the CD one would be one of the most obvious for my puzzles. I wouldn't really blow the whole million on CDs - my wife says we're out of space and I'm not allowed to buy any more bookshelves no matter how much money we might win.

I'm really enjoying the 10 things puzzles but I do agree it would have been better to spread them further apart. Variety is the spice of life

Knowing the authors somewhat has helped on a few puzzles but for the most part, not much. Perhaps it's because I'm so forgetful but I think most long time players didn't have a great advantage. I've noticed that there have been quite a few different players in the top 10 on these puzzles which I think is great

There are two primary reasons we have thus far opened Word Puzzle submissions to Platinum members only.

-- They paid more, over three times as much. For their donation, we feel extra benefits should come along.

-- A matter of editors' workload. Each Platinum member is assigned an Editor through whom he or she submits puzzles. Given the number of editors we have, the difference between dividing 100 or so Platinum members among them versus 1000 or so paid members of both hues is substantial.

Also, for those of you who feel the "10 Things" puzzles are stuck in a rut, you'll just love the final one of the series. Watch for it on March 30.

I enjoy these puzzles and finding out about my fellow Sploofusers. Maybe they are coming out too fast but that's no reason to insult the people that wrote them by calling them boring. More please!

I love them too, but that could be because I feel such an attachment to everyone here. I can see how someone new would find them boring. I enjoy the perks of platinum, but I was on Sploofus for months before I ever opened a blog and read anything or realized the comradery. Chrissy, we'd love for you to go platinum and write some WPs, too. (I think they're horribly difficult to write - mostly because I am not creative and can't think of topics - that's why the 10 things WP is so much easier to do. But there are many here who are awesome at writing them about all topics.) We do enjoy getting some perks for the extra $ we pay for our membership.

It's a great idea to have these WPs constructed by the members, and I think restricting them to platinum members makes sense for the financial/editor constraints reasons.
But if we do such a competition again can we limit the 10 things to alternate puzzles please? Regardless of the variety of the answers, the format does get repetitive. it reduces the lateral thinking aspect that makes the puzzles so much fun.

I don't think the OP was concerned about not being able to write WordPuzzles. It seemed to be for that fact that "10 things" puzzled were boring and had little appeal to the average player.

Just to clarify a couple of things:

-- The Platinum Community "themed" Word Puzzles are *not* part of any competition. They're for fun and to celebrate the wonderful community we have here on Sploofus Island.

-- Yes, in the future, we will make every effort to space out the themed WPs more.
