On a recent trip to Birmingham, Alabama to watch my son play some college ball, my wife, my mother-in-law, and I took a little side trip to historic Rickwood Field. If you are a baseball history buff like I am, I highly recommend seeing Rickwood. It was built in 1910 and is the oldest ballpark in America. It is still used today for some area colleges, high schools, and the Birmingham Barons play an annual game called the Rickwood Classic. You can take a self-guided tour of the place if there are no games being played and in doing so you will be walking in the footsteps of the all-time greats including Babe Ruth, Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Willie Mays (who played there for the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues as a teenager), Stan Musial, Ty Cobb, etc.
