WOW...what an interesting mystery scientist! I got lucky with one of the clues early on that pinpointed the identity of the scientist. That didn't help all that much with my score, but made googling easier, and the googling was well worth it to learn more about this person.

Thank you. I'm going to try to do the puzzle myself and see what I can remember....

Awesome puzzle Barry - great combo of challenge and education - and thankfully this scientist had nothing to do with Vugraphs.

Very well written and excellent person to select (although I didn't figure out who it was until the 4th). Great job.

I knew the scientist right off the bat, but that didn't stop me from two errors. *sigh* Stupid five-letter near-synonyms.

Finished late, don't know how I did, but loved the puzzle. Priestley has been a hero of mine forever.

Thanks for a really enjoyable puzzle, Barry.

Glad you enjoyed it; Priestley seemed a bit obscure to me initially (with a gimme clue about oxygen but no other really well known facts) but my editor reassured me that it was fair).
This format seems to be generally quite popular; I'll keep going with mysteries from other areas.....

Great puzzle- mostly because Joseph Priestley didn't get the historical recognition he deserved.
Your phrases helped to correct that.

I figured his identity during the second phrase. I remembered some of the facts because of a recent National Public Radio show that talked about him.
He was brilliant, and he ended up residing in Pennsylvania before his death.

Hope to visit his museum home some day.

Thoroughly enjoyable, Barry Didn't have a clue who it was until final puzzle as I was trying a google free puzzle except to check my spelling & the phrase called up his name. Then I read the Wiki entry on him, which was interesting, before I pressed enter for the last puzzle, duh
