NEW SPLOOFUS FAQ

Sploofizz: """""The Editors are currently developing a FAQ and it would be helpful to know if there are other things you would like to see explained.""""""

Yes! Do you know anything about training dogs??? My schnauzer keeps scooting her butt across the carpet. I wish I'd never let see me do that....

Also, I'll be sending one in on asparagus and pee smell.

Thanks!!

I would like to see an explanation of why the Sploofus Showdown timer says that my opponent has 0 hours to respond, and then they can still respond after that.

I *think* the timer is somehow based on the day, not the hour, so it counts down to midnight or so, even though the opponent can respond after that. The opponent gets the full 7 days x 24 hours per day = 168 hours to respond.

Rather than explaining why the timer is stupid/misleading, I would prefer to see a fix for the Showdown timer so that it matches the actual time remaining. But that's probably too much to ask for.

(And in case anyone missed it, Sploofizz's FAQ comment above is from Smaug's "Hey What the F" thread, regarding the cap on Showdown points after you have a ton of points....)

Big Davy:

I'm sort of with you on the Showdown clock. An editor tried
to explain it to me a few months ago, but was, I think,
purposely vague. As near as I could understand the
explanation, if the challengee responds after the clock has
run out (but before points are awarded), their answer is
disregarded, right or wrong, and the showdown is officially
over. If that's not the way it works, then I need to have it all
explained to me again.

Well, I for one, couldn't wait for an answer to the question Smaug raised. Here is the result of my research on the most important question posted here. (Straight from "The Straight Dope" by Cecil Adams: http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/577/why-does-asparagus-make-your-pee-smell-funny )

Why does my urine smell funny after I've eaten asparagus?

Cecil's Reply:
Many sagacious persons have noted the peculiar effect of certain products on human urine.

For example, Benjamin Franklin, in a wide-ranging discussion of bodily discharges, once noted, "a few stems of asparagus eaten shall give our urine a disagreeable odor; and a pill of turpentine no bigger than a pea shall bestow upon it the pleasing smell of violets."

It is said that in a venerable British men's club there is a sign reading "DURING THE ASPARAGUS SEASON MEMBERS ARE REQUESTED NOT TO RELIEVE THEMSELVES IN THE HATSTAND."

Serious scientific research in this field dates back to 1891, when M. Nencki tentatively identified a compound known as methanethiol as the culprit. The odor appears within an hour after eating just a few spears of the offending vegetable.

According to Allison and McWhirter (1956), the ability to produce the odor is controlled by a single autosomal (i.e., non-sex-related) dominant gene. In a sample of 115 persons, 46 were rendered fragrant by asparagus and 63 were not. (This leaves 6 mysteriously unaccounted for. Urology is an inexact science, I guess.)

In 1975 one Robert H. White, then with the chemistry department at the University of California at San Diego, found that the odor-causing chemical was not methanethiol after all.

Instead, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Bob was obviously not one to screw around), he found that the aroma was in fact caused by several S-methyl thioesters, specifically S-methyl thioacrylate and S-methyl 3-(methylthio)thiopropionate.

(Thioesters are compounds that result from the reaction of an acid with a sulfur-containing alcohol. They tend to be smelly.)

I know you are very interested in all this stuff and are following me closely, F., so I am going to give you the exact chemical formulation for these chemicals, in case somebody asks you at some fancy social soiree.

The thioacrylate recipe is:

CH2=CHC(=O)SCH3

The thiopropionate is:

CH3SCH2CH2C(=O)SCH3

We are faking the above somewhat given the limitations of the ASCII character set, but I know you are grateful for whatever information we can provide.

Anyway, sez Bob, the "metabolic origin [of the compounds--i.e., how and why they end up in the urine] remains an open question." I can't exactly say that research is continuing, but if anything develops I'll let you know.

— Cecil Adams

Where are the Leaders By Level?
Why can't the personal stats update within a few seconds like the original Sploofus website (vs logging off & on again, which doesn't even always work now-a-days)?
(PS: the personal stats all being listed at the top of my page, as on the original site, was much more user friendly than having some of the categories annexed to the bottom of the page as it is now on 2.0)

OK, I have added into my official Sploofus FAQ list the one about caps on wagers and showdowns, and the showdown timer issue.

I also have added a request for Justin's To-Do list: to fix the personal stats at the bottom of pages to update automatically.

Y'all can keep working on these other FAQs

And what you don't divulge to most people is that its the superfluous 3rd nipple that is inverted.

No, Smaug, that must be the minimum.

My current Showdown challenge has 84 hours to run. But I did not place it 84 hours ago at 6am CET. I haven't been awake at that hour in months.

The hours listed are until the end of the Sploofus day on which the 168 hours expire. That display may just be a simplified approximation.

Now how long exactly the chalengee really has to answer before the door shuts is something I don't know.
