Linda, check into Skype. It has been a Godsend for my 11 year old grandson whose daddy has to travel a great deal. They talk with one another face to face every night and life is not perfect but at least its good again. It also allows me to visit with my family that lives out of state other than just by phone or letter.

I've added Sasha's picture to my photo gallery for everyone who would like to see it without accessing the site, which will likely take it down soon anyway.

Hope you don't mind, Linda, if you would give me your email I'll send you the photo so you can upload it to your own profile.

Ain't she pretty?

Can't get the pic up, but good on yer for rescuing. I always rescue, my breed is german shepherd. Been rescuing since the 70's and never had a bad one yet. My girl is called Carla and she is just 11months, she is at my side as i post this message munching on a bone. I hope you have many happy years with your new babe.

Yes, I do have her picture on my profile now thanks toi Donna for helping me and Yes, altered does mean desexed - Linda :0

Salzypat  (Level: 154.3 - Posts: 5295)

Yes, Bobbsey, altered is the same as saying the animal has been spayed or neutered. Since so many people get confused as to which sex gets spayed and which gets neutered, I guess someone just decided to put altered, which applies to either sex.

Which gives me the opportunity to brag a little and do a little commercial. Our animal shelter is operated by the city. They are saying they believe they have the lowest kill rate of any municipal animal shelter in Nebraska.

From the North Platte Telegraph story:

"Shelter supervisor Kerri Kelsey reported that the local shelter's euthanization rate for 2008 was 9 percent. At 10 percent, a shelter is considered to be a "low kill" shelter.

The North Platte shelter took in 1,273 dogs in 2008 and managed to adopt out locally 379 of them. An additional 337 dogs were put into the rescue program where a network of volunteers work tirelessly and sometimes drive hundreds of miles to get a shelter dog into a permanent home.

Kelsey said an additional 448 dogs were claimed by their owners, leaving 109 dogs that had to be put to sleep last year. While last year was a good year, Kelsey is concerned at how the economy is going to impact the lives of the animals that come under her care in 2009."

I have been at the shelter when there are old, blind, toothless, arthritic dogs there that owners have dropped off so they don't have to euthanize the animal themselves. Or some of those 109 are dogs that have been so abused the only safe option is to euthanize them. So, taking those dogs into consideration (which might be only 9 or 10 a year), it would make those figures even better.

The staff works tirelessly to get adoptable dogs into rescue - so people like Caramel1 can adopt. There are members of our Paws-Itive Partners Humane Society and other volunteers who take dogs to Denver or Omaha (4 hours one way) regularly to get into a rescue. Other times they drive maybe a 50 or 100 mile portion of the trip, turning the dogs over to other volunteers. If you're looking for a place to do a good deed, consider volunteering with the animal shelter.

And whether you call it spay or neuter or altered, please have your cats and dogs "fixed."

The solution is not at the animal shelter or with a rescue, but with the animal owner.

Don't let that little critter turn you into a happy-go-lucky, turn the other cheek, political apathetic. They have been known to do that you know.
