WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

I recently read an article about a man in Kalamazoo, Michigan who won $10,000 dollars in the lottery and decided to donate all of his winnings in to the local chapter of the United Way. I found myself wondering what I would do with a sudden windfall, and a serious debate between my shoulder angel and shoulder devil ensued. Hey, I am human after all. So to appease them both, I came up with answers to both.

Shoulder Angel: After more than twenty years in the health care industry, my parents sacrificed everything and started their own hospice. Their focus is on quality patient care, not profit. They have a true passion for what they do, and are remortaging their house for the second time in order to ensure that the terminally ill of our community recieve the comfort care that they truly need and deserve, and that their loved ones recieve the support and compassion they need and deserve. I would use my winnings to finance their cause.

Shoulder Devil: I would see every live performance of REM possible and visit Glastonbury and the Isle of Avalon.

I'm with your shoulder angel. Guess it's because I work for welfare, supervising the unit that determines eligibility for aged, blind and disabled individuals, and these types of places are desperately needed. Kudos and blessings to your parents!

I have a passion for helping people. I would love to have a big place where everybody would have a warm place to sleep and a hot meal. I'd also give as much as possible to my church to help fund my daughter's school..

Mighty nice shoulder angel you got there, Nips. Pretty cool parents, too.

Angel - give it to the Childrens Institute of Pittsburgh. Its a Pediatric rehab hospital and school for disabled kids - they get kids from over 200 school districts with special needs. They recently opened 4 class rooms for autistic children. They are the only facility in North America - ie Canada to Mexico, that treats a disorder called Prader Willi Syndrome -- a very rare condition where the child literally will eat themselves to death. The Rehab unit is truly a place of miracles -- I saw kids come to us, on ventilators, in vegatative states, WALK out. They have a feeding program that teaches failure to thrive babies to eat. I can not begin to give them the credit they deserve. Their slogan and charitable campaigns are centered around "Amazing Kids". It is an wonderful place.

Devil - I would move to some where near water.

Yeah, my parents are some pretty amazing people. In addition to running the hospice, my father is a non-paid lobbyist and both have been making several trips to Washington to advocate for health care reform and improvement in end of life care. They also have a non profit foundation to raise funds for an inpatient hospice unit to provide those no longer able to care for themselves in their homes an alternative to the less than homey atmosphere of the skilled nursing facilities. No such facility exists in Northern Nevada, and it is a resource the community desperately needs. I used to work as their receptionist until my health took a turn for the worse, so for a while the hospice truly was a family business. It kills me that I am no longer able to actively contribute to their dream, other than taking over the upkeep of their house (cooking, cleaning, etc.) so that they can focus on their work without worrying about more mundane matters. Ah well, at least I can still champion their cause whenever possible.

No Linda it is not "we' . As I have found out if one is well liked by editors, one may say what ever one wants against another player and it will never be removed no matter how many times you quote the rules against abusive behavior and inappropriate comments.

I censored somebody? How am I supposed to do that?

Posts are getting deleted again? Good grief. Can't you just see Dana Carvey's Church Lady just sitting and reading posts, waiting to say "Isn't that Special?" with her finger hovering over the delete key?

At least nobody is spitting on anybody yet.

Richard, it also is a big help if you are both a player and an editor then you can delete anything you want and keep on talking-really not very clever though to appear as your player self right after the deletion-tat is if you really believe people don't know- Linda

We'd like to remind everyone that the issue at question here is not censorship, but standards. The business philosophy of Sploofus is that the boards will be family-friendly, and the editor with the responsibility for monitoring the boards, with the concurrence of ALL other editors online at the time, felt that Smaug's comment (in context, not an individual word) was over the line. It was not "political" in any way, nor does it matter to us who posted it or why. We removed inappropriate content, nothing more.

Please familiarise yourselves with the Terms of Use statement at the bottom of the "Post Message" blank and you will see the editors acted in good faith.

Thank you all for respecting the rules.

If I shall ever feel the need to post inappropriate language or thoughts, I'll just trot on over to facebook and MySpace. There are NO standards there: Swear words, sexual words and fairly explicit sexual talk, it's all there. I block those people so I don't have to read the stuff. But that's where I'll go if I want to let loose with a bunch of highly suggestive language.

I won't use that language on this site because I know what the rules are - It's a family friendly site. Keep it as clean as though your 8 year old child or grandchild was listening.

Yes, those are the rules but they don't apply to everyone. Believe the most offensive thing to many is the selective deletions whether it is explicit language, innuendo, or just name calling. It you check back couple of threads believe I was called awful, dreadful, and other things but those remained and they were not said in a friendly way I just consider the source. NO selective deletions either we are ALL sweetness and nice or we are not-Linda
