WHAT I PRAY FIRST EVERY MORNING

I thought I would share with you what I pray every morning. I usually pray this on my drive to school (which is about 1.5 hours long). Each line is taken directly from Scripture, so that I know it is God's will for my life and my day.

There was a long time I quit praying this first, and when I started back I could IMMEDIATELY tell such a difference in my day. In fact, I can physically feel my chest let go of tightness as I pray this:

Father God, in Jesus' name, please forgive me of all my sins.

Please purge me of all evil.

Please fill every cell in me with your Holy Spirit. Fill me with your Spirit of Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.

Please put on me the Helmet of Salvation, the Breastplate of Righteousness, gird my loins with Truth, shod my feet with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace, put in my hand the Sword of the Spirit - which is the Word, and please Lord, be my hind guard.

Please put a hedge around me to protect me from attack from evil, and I am so sorry that I am so weak.

Please send your 2 angels for each 1 evil that would attack me.

Please make me today the human, the Christian, the woman, the mother, the mother-in-law, the grandmother, the sister, the aunt, the cousin, the friend, the teacher you want me to be today.

Please let me find favor with the people I am around, according to what is Your will.

Father, which is in Heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.

Give me this day my daily bread, and forgive me my trespasses as I forgive those who trespass against me,

And lead me not into temptation, but deliver me from evil, for Yours is the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory forever.

Amen.

I got to thinking, you might think that's a very self-centered prayer.

It is, because if I don't prepare myself for the day, it causes me to be too wrapped in self-centered-ness the rest of the day.

I take care of my sin first.

Then it leaves me to be thankful the rest of the day, free to pray for others on my list, others who God brings to mind through the day, free to pray for others as I see the need through the day.

I've found that since I hit menopause, I understand a lot more about other things I've seen. I never used to have a temper. Boy, did THAT change. Since my thyroid was radiated out, my thoughts and feelings about everything have changed.

Without this prayer to prepare myself, I am everything I don't want to be: impatient, angry, ungrateful, frustrated. And I'm mostly those horrible traits with myself! If I end up angry at myself, it leaves me the most unChristlike possible and the hedge I put up is around me against everybody and everything.

I have to ask God to rip that hedge down and plow me to receive his seeds of Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Gentleness, and Self-Control. Only then do I have anything to share with anyone else.

Maybe others don't have this problem, but I do, and I need God to be my warrior against it. I just want to hide behind Daddy and let His power fight for me.

We're called by God to pray without ceasing - a continuing conversation with God. The rest of the day is that.

Woops. Left out Faithfulness. Maybe the most important.

Thanks so much for sharing the things you pray at the beginning of each day. I agree with you about the importance of starting each day with prayer (and continuing to pray throughout the day). I learned the hard way a long time ago that God is the One Who provides me with what I need. Without Him, I am selfish, short-tempered, stubborn, and foolish (the list goes on and on) despite all of my good intentions.

Sometimes I start the day with a song, too.
Grace and peace,
Katherine
