My computer seems to be ailing so I am considering buying a new laptop, any advice?

I would suggest you consider going to Walmart and buying a Toshiba for around $800. My son says his is the best computer he's ever had. He uses it every day with his job out in the field, bouncing around in his truck. It's 2 years old and he's never had even one problem with it.

I bought a laptop from Walmart about 18 months ago - and only had 2 problems
....Hated Windows Vista....and had to buy a new compatible printer
....Dropped a full cup of coffee on the keyboard. Luckily "they" sell replacement
keyboards these days

What's wrong with it? If you don't clean it up from time to time it will slow down.

Yeah. When I think of computers, I think of Wal-Mart.

In this economy, there's not much reason to pay more for the exact same thing somewhere else.

Besides, wherever you buy your computer, chances are it was made in China anyway, so why worry about the where? Just concentrate on the what, specifically, what do YOU need it to do? Read lots of user reviews of items to get an idea of what kinds of problems people are facing with particular products. Might just be user preference (like with Vista) rather than an actual problem.

Have fun shopping around!

Believe it or not, my grocery store (not affiliated with Wal-Mart)
sells computers. I didn't check out the specs, but the price
painted on the front window seemed really competitive.

Anne, if you've run all the clean up programs (registry, caches, spyware . . .), confirmed that it is not your anti-virus program

and run thru this list as well

http://www.bestsecuritytips.com/xfsection+article.articleid+43.htm

it may be time to consider a new one.

I buy new every 5 years.

BTW when I was having slowdown problems a few months ago, it was surely my anti-virus program. When I upgraded to the new version, all was well except that it crashes almost daily now - either Explorer 8.0 or Bitdefender, I presume.

Thank you all for your advice. My son-in-law is a computer geek so I'll ask him to take a look. I think I may need a new cord the screen goes from gray to white and back, perhaps a short. There are several lines (one blue the other yellow) down the middle of the screen. I use to be able to get rid of them and now they seem here to stay. I hear what everyone is saying about the economy and Wal-Mart. You are right, most of them will probably be made in China! Thanks again to all of you for your help. The people on Sploofus are just awesome. Blessings to all, Anne

Blue line means you will live a long life.

Yellow line means difficulty in relationships.

The white zone is for loading and unloading.

There is absolutely no parking in the red zone.

Anne
Don't take any notice of them....
Blue line means your computer is blinking
Yellow line means it's K.A.P.U.T.
