Have a margarita today, on me! (mine will be frozen with salt)

Only 12 more school days for me this year - that's an even better reason to celebrate!

Tell me again why we celebrate a Mexican holiday in the US? I do like the tequila though!

Here is what I received about it in an email this very morning (and remember, please don't shoot the messenger):

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's
mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic
was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for
delivery on May 5th in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be
the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in
New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of
mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the
great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an
iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise and
were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the
loss. Their anguish was so great that they declared a
National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and
is known, of course, as Sinko De Mayo.

Well, I'm a Miracle Whip girl, myself, but hey - to each his own!

Jank - I'm with you with the Miracle Whip. No mayo in this household.

Back to the topic - we celebrated Cinco de Mayo by going to a Turkish restaurant.

Mom and I went to a Mexican restaurant for lunch today. We were amazed at how crowded it was, cause we had forgotten the holiday.
Why do we celebrate Cinco de Mayo? Good excuse to drink I guess.
I've heard that it's a minor holiday in Mexico. Something about defeating the French army. Well, that would be minor

Two years ago...Philadelphia...Cinco de Mayo...met a whole bunch of wonderful Sploofusers!!!

Justin was there, Ken, Chick, Lodi, MB, Marlin, Kravfighter, Goddess, Allena, Banomet, JohnTV, Iuatah, Smoke, Jeannarie, Ken...ack! Can't remember all this moment, but just had a blast!!! Now, whenever I think of Cinco de Mayo I think of Sploofus in Philly.

Oh yeah...met Oogie there.

Same reason we celebrate St. Patrick's Day, I think. Those around us who are of that heritage celebrate because it means something to them, and we celebrate along with them to show our solidarity.

Oh, and it's a good excuse to drink

Sun, I forgot it was Cinco de Mayo in Philly. Has it really been two years?

Scott is Miracle Whip, I am Mayo. I think Miracle Whip is nasty and nothing is worse than biting into some egg salad or potato salad and discovering it was made with Miracle Whip. Think of the scene in Big when Tom Hanks tries caviar.

Let's not forget Mardi Gras. And maybe Purim will catch on at some point.
