Some time ago there was discussion here about a novel concerning elephants--can't recall name right now-- but anyway, I told about the elephant sanctuary in Tennessee, and the story of the reunion of Shirley and Jenny, and about Bunny, who retired about ten years ago to the sanctuary after many years in the zoo in Evansville, IN. I just heard that Bunny is probably dying now, of old age, but in a peaceful way under the sky rather than on a concrete floor in chains.

It sounds like a time to be happy and sad.

Bunny was not kept in chains when she lived in Evansville she had a large barn and her own enclosed yard with a pool, and she lived there almost forty years. Throuugh we very sad when Bunny was moved we knew it was for the best. and all are happy that she has enjoyed her freedom for the last ten years. charlotte

Charlotte, we lived in Evansville when our children were very young, almost 40 years ago. I took our kids to see Bunny only once, and that one time at least, she was in a concrete area behind bars, indoors, with a chain on one leg. I don't remember if it was bad weather, and I know the Evansville Zoo developed better facilities for her after that, but we were saddened to see how things were the one time we saw her and I didn't want to see it again. We left Evansville in 1974, and never saw her again, but followed the story of her retirement 10 years ago. Everybody loved Bunny, but some people loved her and wanted her to go to the sanctuary, and some people loved her and couldn't let her go. I'm so glad she got those 10 good years to walk on the earth and sleep under the stars, and I know you are, too.

I'm sorry that your children had to see her chained, but the new enclosure was so much better for her. And i whole heartly agree that she was in a much better place when she went to Tennessee, she was only four years old when they brought her to Evansville. I can't believe how her two elephant friends are staying close to her while see is in her final stages of death but they say elephants are usually like a family, so may they help her in this time.. And i know iam an old softie when it comes to animals i hate to see them even kill deer, which they do a lot of around here. It broke my heart when we had to have our shitzu put down. We had her for over fifteen years. charlotte

Is Bunny any relation to Nellie the Elephant, who said goodbye to the circus.

Well, I wish Bunny well, but that name is quite a handicap for an elephant.

Elephants are amazingly wonderful.
Ron, I grew up in Evansville. Was the pirate ship with all the monkeys on it still there when you were?

Sure, Sandy, I remember the Monkey Pirate Ship. Kids loved it, me too!

I looked up that book that started this thread, it's "The White Bone", a novel from the POV of the elephants' world, very richly imagined and intense. I bet you'd love it. I'm looking for wherever I put it so I can read it again.

Bunny RIP

Bunny is to be buried in the spot she picked to lay down in which, they said was one of her favorite places she loved so much. I remember the monkey ship also but it hasn't been used for years, the last i heard they were going to do somthing else with that area, don't know if they ever did. Am so glad she had these last ten years of freedom. charlotte
